This is a drink I made up awhile back and my party guests have raved about it.. I named it the TseTse Fly as a riff on another of my favorite nontiki drinks which provided the inspiration(The Firefly - which is 2 parts grapefruit juice, 1 part Vodka, and a teaspoon or so of Grenadine.). I just looked at the Tiki Central Drink contest and realized it's quite similar to the winner of that contest, though I swear on my stack of Sven Kirsten books that I came up with it on my own. Here's the recipe as I make it. I hope some others try it and hopefully will enjoy it, too. I list the brand names I used. Please don't lambaste me for some of my brand choices, as options are quite limited here in Fresno. TseTse Fly [ Edited by: TeeKeeMan 2010-03-27 14:03 ] |

Sunday night, Test Pilot. Is it wrong to choose a drink based on garnish? I had 2 maraschino cherries to dispense with, and since 3 are needed for a 3 Dots and a Dash... :) |

I'm drinking a Milky Way (or at least it's close the Milky Way as served at the Tiki Ti). Bailys, Kahlua, amarretto, milk, and a tiny splash of 7-up. Mmmm... so good... |

Don the Beachcomber's Mai-Tai Swizzle from BBB's Remixed. (Granted, it may be perverse to put a Don drink in a Vic glass, but this is the only double old fashioned I have.) |

I shoulda gone with another one... but... tonight I tried the Miehana. I kind of wish I hadn't, though... I mean, no offense to the Bum, but I'm just not feelin' this. I think it's the full ounce of Grand Marnier, but something's sticking in my throat... it's just a little too sharp for my taste. |

I received BB Remixed two weeks ago and have been on a quest to make new things I haven't tried before, including ingredients I've shied away from because I know they aren't really my bag (but as a completist I'm going to at least try to check some drinks off the list). One such ingredient is coconut cream. I opened a can of Coco Lopez last night and made the Tradewinds. However, since it's a bowl, I downsized it by 1/3, so instead of 4 oz of lemon juice and 3 oz each of everything else called for, I did 1 1/3 and 1 oz. respectively. I poured the blended result into a Trader Vic's coconut bowl. It tasted good, but was too "desserty" for my tastes and even at 1/3 almost immediately filled me up. So one coconut cream drink off the list, and will use the rest of the 15 oz can to check a few other coconut cream items off the list (though spaced out every couple of weeks, or until the cream goes bad in the fridge). Much better than the drink I made last week with Kahlua, whose name I forget (once I got home I discovered the 50oz bottle of Kahlua at Bevmo was the Hazlenut flavor--ecch--so I may have to try again with regular Kahlua, though I'm not really a fan of it in general--I'm way more into the drinks calling for falernum and allspice dram). |

Jeff, I'll give that a try--is it unlike a lot of the other Trader Vic's products that are full of artificial ingredients? I am a coffee drinker, but from this and past attempts at coffee grogs, I tend to like to keep my coffee drinking and my booze drinking as two separate experiences (just like my booze drinking and my dessert eating). By the way, I'm going to come down to Don's Monday happy hour one of these weeks--things have just been too hectic lately. |

I'm having a Captain's Grog right now--yum, one of the best drinks I've made out of Remixed! However, I'm not sure whether I used Grade A or B maple syrup. It's Safeway Select brand, from Canada (but doesn't say anything about grades). Looking at wikipedia (always dangerous, I know) it appears the grades have to do with darkness--this is somewhat dark, but I think closer to Grade A Amber than the really dark Grade B. Not sure if the "grade A only" requirement has to do with coloration or taste. Whatever, this tastes damn good! [ Edited by: congawa 2010-04-13 20:53 ] |

A Donga Punch. I can't say I dislike it, however the Martinique rum in it is quite dominant. I wonder if it would taste better using a different brand. |

"Fogg Cutter" from BBB:Remixed... Portions of the OJ + Lime looked interesting (and had them ready)... Plus, I've had a bottle of Gin sticking around for several years and I figured the flavor would be covered up well... The drink was great, though deadly!! Shockingly, I could get the Gin and finally found a gin drink I like... Go Tiki! (can't till BB's next book) |

I'm having one of these; Not really a big fan of beer to begin with, and this is certainly not my favourite, but I bought a case and gave half to a gardener in exchange for some logs from the trees he was cutting down. Now I can start my first large Tiki carving. Woohoo. |

Regular old Mai Tai...but with 5 Star Rhum Barbancourt instead of the Appleton/St. James combo. It tastes a lot more like the Mai Tai's that I've had a TV's for some reason. I always thought it was the limes, or curacao, or orgeat that made my drinks taste off, but now with Senior Curacao, Philibert de Routin Orgeat and good limes, they still never taste quite right. Call me blasphemous, but I don't think I'm a fan of the Martinique rum... |

A bottle of Sahti that's been sitting in the cellar for a year and a bit. Doesn't seem to have done it any harm. It's a strong (11%) Finnish style of rye and wheat beer spiced with honey, juniper and sea wormwood. Tastes kinda like mead. Quite pleasant. |

I've already enjoyed a Miehana this evening, for the first time with fresh squeezed orange juice thanks to this new guy: Fresh squeezed limes and lemons were always standard fare thanks to a hand juicer (squeezer). But oranges were always too large for that tool. Now I have a better tool. And the difference is pronounced. And now, off to a Damon's Mai-Tai via Taboo Table. kevin |

Yesterday afternoon . . . MISSIONARY'S DOWNFALL from "Remixed" (pg. 73. A very labor-intensive drink (mint leaf plucking), and in my opinion,a bit short on the rum (only 1 oz.) so I boosted it by .5 oz ( could probably even handle 2 oz. quite nicely)-. . . . a pleasant, refreshing drink - one I'll reserve for "Special Occasions" I bet you feel more like you do now now than you did when you came in.
