btw, how many of y'all do the simple syrup/orgeat combo, as called for in the orig recipe for Mai Tais?

I'll make mine that way, or if I'm feelin crazy I'll use an organic agave nectar instead of simple syrup.

a Boodles martini here.

holy Busted Flush.!

For the money it's hard to beat Boodles. Used to be able to get it for about $17 which was a steal, but even at $21 or so it's a good value.

Over the last couple of evenings we have been mixing up all sorts of tasty things trying to decide on a couple of drinks to batch mix for Hukilau. Aku Aku Zombie, Tiki Ti Puka Punch, and a couple of different Rum Barrels have all advanced to the semi-finals. . .

Hey Jon,
Where didja get that palm Tiki Bob?
My bruddah TikiVato found one in Rosarito Beach,Baja last year. Very cool!
Later, gotta make some Painkillers-I’m afraid I’m addicted.

Hang10 is doing some single tasking.

I am drinking a Saturn. Great drink!

I can't get enough of the Passion Fontaine, my favorite drink among the many tasted at the Miami Rum Festival. I changed up the recipe just a bit tonight:

  • 1 1/2 ounces Cockspur 12
  • 1/2 ounce El Dorado 15
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 ounce passion fruit syrup
  • 4 slices of jalapeño

Shake with ice and pour unstrained into a tall glass. Garnish liberally with basil. Sweet, spicy and addictive.

Here's the full recap of all the cocktails at the festival:

Earlier, I started to get into The Hukilau spirit with one of my favorite Mai-Kai classics, the Big Bamboo, served in last year's official mug by Tiki Diablo:

That's the fresh basil. Works surprisingly well with the jalapeño, passion fruit and rum.

Yuck

I am trying to recreate a drink I had at Gather in Berkeley, CA. The ingredients are bourbon, dark rum, velvet falernum, lime juice, bitters, and a mint garnish. Any thoughts on the proportions? Thanks, Peter

I would start with 1 ounce each of the bourbon and rum, 1/2 ounce falernum, 1 1/2 ounces of lime and a couple dashes of bitters. Then adjust the falernum and lime to taste.

nice!

Just finished a Black Magic at the Molokai Bar at the Mai-Kai. There was a particularly ruddy bunch of tiki folk at the bar this evening. (You know who you are, heh!)

Had a Mai Tai and a Longboard at Tommy Bahama’s Palm Desert. Drove back to our Palm Springs hotel and walked across the street to the Tonga Hut. Had a Painkiller, a Shrub old fashion and I forget what my 3rd drink was but it was good!
Cheers

An EMPTY Special Reserve Daiquiri and an almost empty Special Planters Punch in the Molokai Bar.

Again, an EMPTY Samoan Grog (the Wahini is drinking them faster than I can snap the pictures!) and a Mai Tai.

U guys are makin me thirsty

Drinking a "Mutiny" at the Molokai Bar at the Mai-Kai as recommended to me by Hurricane Hayward. (Great suggestion!) Slip And The Spinouts playing live. The bare-breasted Molokai Maiden figure is about 6 feet from me. The serving gals at the bar are providing incredible service and Shanghai Chicken as always. (Thanks Cindy and Brianne.) All of this is total awesomeness!

Sorry, no pics, cuz I left my phone and camera in my hotel room. Doh!

Some more from last night. . .

There she is in all her splendor.

Black Magic and Deep Sea Diver.

S.O.S and Oh So Deadly off of the mild drinks menu.

I am jealous S&R!

No pics since it was a wedding tasting for my friends but I had:

Goof Punch
Mojito
Navy Grog
Planters Punch

At Bali Hai tonight.

Going to Prohibition later for Thirsty Thursday. Might not get pictures but I will list what I am drinking to catch up with you guys on the right coast.

Today we enjoyed a working version of the Latitutde 29 cocktail from Beachbum Berry and his head bartender, Steve Yamada.

Oh yeah, I finally posted that long-promised Yeoman's Grog tribute recipe:

And the even longer promised review of Beachbum Berry’s Navy Grog Ice Cone Kit ...

Prohibition Sucks! Don't go there!

Cabbed all the way downtown and I guess they must be closed for good because it was not open. It would be cool if they could say that on their website...

Went to Craft & Commerce and had
Giddy up!
Corpse Reviver #2
Eulogy

Went to Starlite and had
Kentucky Colonel
Galapagos

Went to Aero Club and had
Old Fashioned
Ardbeg 10 year with an ice cube

I'm not sure if they are actually closed... on their social media stuff (never trust a regular website since they rarely get updated) it says they closed a few months back to renovate.

It could be they are still renovating or the other, typical method, where they shut down to renovate and then close shop.

Back at it in the Molokai.

Special Reserve Daiquiri and a Jet Pilot.

Zombie and a Hidden Pearl.

Mystery Bowl at the Mai-Kai! Our maiden who delivered the bowl hypnotized our entire table.

Picked up a bottle of Plantation dark. Reminds of Appleton Reserve.tastes great neat, has a golden hue.

Nice in a dark and stormy, subtle but you can taste it, has a Jamaican woodiness even tho its from Trinidad. Bottled by ferrand

Happy Father's Day to Me!!!!

A bit of a variation on the Mai Tai recipe from the Bali Hai in San Diego. Instead of the ounce of sour mix, I subbed a half oz. of lemon juice and a half ounce of homemade cinnamon/vanilla symple syrup.
