Love Coles.

Demerera 80 Swizzle, (Beacbum Berry)
Great drink.

Making a few I've tried before but not had in a while:

Atomic Grog Rum Julep - nice!

Pago Pago Punch - nice!

One new one:

1862 Rhum Punch - nice!

Skipper Kent Planter's Punch. Not really feeling the Smith & Cross/lemon combo. Atleast the presentation's nice. Working on my garnishing skills.

if you like the Jungle Bird, the Negroni, or The Boulvardier, then you'll like what I've come up with:

PLUTO'S HEART

1 oz each of Cruzan Black Strap, Campari, and sweet vermouth; stir on the rocks in a rocks glass.

in tribute to NASA's results this week; or, to the dark heart of the roman god of the underworld if you prefer...

[ Edited by: thePorpoise 2015-07-19 21:27 ]

A Petty Cash Taqueria Brixton!

a whiskey sour w/Wild Turkey 101 proof;

then, a Floridita cocktail, why the hell not? Cuban embassy re-opened today;

then, a Pluto's Heart.

A Roger Room Last Word!

Never tried a Pieces of Eight in any form before. Decided to try it with Havana Club and fresh homemade passion fruit syrup. Seriously good.

So good I needed another...

Mmmmmmm, looks good! I've got to make some of that passion fruit syrup and give this one (and other drinks I have seen here calling for it) a try!

Luna - I'm not going to Oasis, but only because I can't spare the time or money this year. Too much going on, unfortunately. I really want to go to Tiki Caliente more at the moment because I love Palm Springs. I grew up visiting PS a lot to go backpacking and climbing in the surrounding mountains. I'm a mountaineer at heart...

Porpoise - I want to make a Pluto's Heart, but am out of one of the rums, and dang Total Whine is out of stock, and I haven't found it elsewhere yet either... Sounds tasty, along with the Pieces O' Eight...

Ace- i make it with Cruzan blackstrap, sweet vermouth, and campari.

Porpoise - that's the recipe I have, I think it was posted here as from "Remixed." It's the Cruzan blackstrap that I haven't found yet, but I'm sure its here. (I'm not going to substitute with something else.) Every liquor store carries all the flavored rums, but the blackstrap is a little harder to find. And I have to refresh my Vermouth as well, but that's everywhere.

Thanks, and cheers!

Too bad Ace, maybe next time. Let me know when you do make it out this way.

Porpoise, no Campari?!? I hate when that happens. Are you going to make it out to Oasis?

Keith, maybe I'll spin the wheel tonight

That's a whole lot of cinnamon and/or nutmeg!

Nutmeg and cinnamon. Really tasty with Pussers. I don't think they have Smith & Cross there. Mike, are you going to Oasis this year?

Negroni at Coles
Pastrami French Dip is slap your mom good!

Luna are you at Coles?

Edit: head slap! you said so right below your post
I am envious, Could use one of those French Dips right now, enjoy it man!

Wow, Coles... Oldest restaurant in Los Angeles, I believe. In the basement/ground floor of the old Pacific Electric Railway building. Wow, the history there... Awesome French Dip!

I usually just sprinkle some on, never like that. I've still yet to make a Painkiller with S&C or Kraken as I've seen suggested. I should get on that.

Wish I could get to Oasis. No can do since we spent almost four weeks away for our wedding and honeymoon already this year.

I understand that Mike. Looks like you had a great wedding, congrats! Maybe next year.

ATP & Ace - yeah Coles is the best. Spent $25 round trip but it was totally worth it! Coles opened in 1908. I am addicted!

Old Fashioned at Seven Grand

Puka Puka. This might be my favorite drink at Tiki Ti.

Mike, just a dusting for me as well with the Painkillers. I usually put a bit of nutmeg in the mix as well.

Luna, I'm very curious, how is the bar at Cole's?

QB Kula. Not my favorite. Malibu...

Ace - I love it! All the classics and they are willing to stray from the menu and make variations. I also got a Creole which is a Manhattan variation with Amaro, Benedictine, rye and Carpano. Honestly one of my favorite bars in LA. I chatted with the bartender a bunch today. I would have gotten a Smith & Cross drink if I didn't want to get to Tiki Ti at open time :) I 100% recommend it. There is a bar behind it as well. Speakeasy style call Varnish. They will accommodate you with any requests. Not to mention that the French Dips are soooooo gooood! :)

Thanks, Luna, I haven't been to Cole's in 20 years, honestly don't remember much of the interior. I had a friend with a shop across the street in the old Santa Fe building where they have real old-school brass elevators with lever controls and the "dials" above the doors, just like in the old movies. Cole's is on the edge of the garment district, and right next door to the jewelry district. Truly a fun part of town. Thanks to you I'm adding it to my "must do" list the next time I am out there. Wow, 1908...

Varnish, the back room speakeasy in Coles was originally, L.A. gangster Mickey Cohen's base of operations during his reign
in old L.A. oh man the history!

Coles has been renovated since you where last there, but they kept all the old booths & dark wood interior
still filled with vintage art & photos etc.

Coles turns up in many TV shows needing a period look, Madmen etc.
The area is now Hipster central, but if you go early you escape the crowd, food & drinks are great (Old Fashions in particular!)

Thank you sir, you're right... I got it confused with someone else's posting that I wrote down. I'm picking up the blackstrap and a fresh bottle of vermouth after work tonight and will make it.

I do enjoy making others recommendations from this thread.

I pity the non-imbiber...

also, that blackstrap is the only rum i've had that makes a great jungle bird

Very cool, Porpoise, I'll look that up and give it a try as well. I'm trying to settle on a diverse menu of drinks for when friends come over, so am trying new things here and there as I get time.

My wife and I made it to Varnish on our one and only (so far) trip to LA together. It was excellent, they make great drinks painstakingly and methodically. . . like most of us on here!
