I did make a Jungle Bird the other day just to try the recipe. Very tasty! I have been mainly using the Aperol in French drinks lately. I have been on a big absinthe kick for quite some time so I have been going through those recipes. I don't mind the Absinthe forward drinks, even the Earthquake. But I am strange I guess. Went to Bali Hai last night and almost went through the whole "strong" menu, just didn't have a scorpion bowl. Tasted some Denizen rum after that.
Here is the recipe if you are interested:
The Necromancer is one of my favorite recipes, but it is another that is Absinthe forward. Here is that recipe: 1.5 oz Absinthe Verte I just bought some edible flowers for my garden, so I will soon post a pic of this drink with the full garnish. Sorry, not all of these are tiki, I usually will stick to rum or tiki on this thread :) I am going to Tiki Ti on Friday, if anyone out there in internetsville wants to have a drink. I am going to try to get there at 4 when they open. I will be posting pictures! |

I'm trying the new Denizen 8 in a Mai Tai. I do like the flavor profile; it's like a mix between that Jamaican Pot Still you get from Smith & Cross with a hint of the Agricole. I'll have to keep trying it out, though, as the flavor seems to get lost amongst the rest of the Mai Tai. |

Let's re-name this: "What Were You Drinking - When Tiki Central Was Down?" I was enjoying my new Mai-Kai mug from Tiki Diablo with a Big Bamboo ... I love the way he sweats when holding the drink ... And now, for something completely different, tonight I was in the mood for a classic and also looking to honor Martin Cate's upcoming foray into the world of gin. So I consulted Dr. Cocktail, and realized that I had yet to mix The Straits Sling since acquiring a bottle of kirschwasser. Dare I say it tops the Singapore Sling? Much more subtle and elegant, it's a totally different style of drink. It doesn't beat you over the head yet delivers lots of great flavors. Perhaps my favorite gin drink of the moment. |

Hayward, it's nice to see another fan of good gin drinks. (Uncle Val's Botanical Gin was my gateway-gin and put gin into an entirely new light for me.) I will have to open my copy of the good doctor's book and follow your lead and try that sling. By the way, Ted Haight, "Dr. Cocktail," was the bartender in the movie "Superbad." I heard this when I watched the film with the commentary track on. And since they were not able to secure permission to use "real" bottles of liquors and beers in the movie, Dr. Cocktail was tasked with creating a myriad of fake bottle labels for all the liquors visible in the film. All this according to the comments track on the Superbad DVD. |

Last week I got a chance to try Spy Hop gin from San Juan Island aboard a sailboat named "Spy Hop" owned by some filmmaker friends visiting this hemisphere from Auatralia. Excellint gin, packed with lots of interesting floral botanicals. Just had a couple of ounces neat but would love to mix with it. Got through the TC outage with the help of several Aku Aku Zombies and a Kon-Tiki Mai Tai thrown in for good measure. I am now completely out of passionfruit syrup and have to decide whether to get some Goya pulp and whip up a batch of homemade or start hitting every Latin grocery within a 20 mile radius trying to find the fantastic store-bought Puerto Rican sirop de parcha that I have grown dependent on and the local store has now stopped carrying. |

Aloha AceExplorer, Sunny&Rummy, et al. I'll have to look for Dr. Cocktail in Superbad. That story makes me wonder how many of the bottles pictured in the book are re-creations, or at least "refurbished." I love the Bum's story about going out drinking with him when they were both trying to figure out old cocktail recipes. Apparently he spent a lot of time going to various bars and coaxing bartenders into making old recipes that he'd dug up. By all means, there's nothing wrong with a good gin (or whiskey or tequila) cocktail. But for me, the operative word would be "good." My tastebuds are a lot more forgiving with rum drinks. And my bar runneth over with rums, so 90% of my imbibing is centered around cane spirits. Speaking of which, I think I'll go whip up a Shark Bite in honor of Shark Week ... |

HH, in Superbad, watch the beers McLovin and the police officers are drinking at the bar. Then also the scene where Seth (Jonah Hill) is raiding the fridge in the basement at the party and all the beer labels are fake. The bottles along the walls and shelves in the liquor store are also fake but harder to read. And finally, the director's comments nail all this down. Don't expect deep director's comments here - it's more of a hilarious bs-session with 4 or 5 of the cast. Watch it and have a few cocktails. |

Just made my first, subsequently followed by my second, home made Mai Tai. For some reason I never stocked Orgeat in my bar and now I can't understand why. I read through an old thread on here about homemade orgeat and while I was tempted to go through the grueling process myself I was glad to see my local spirits store carried BG Reynold's which several people recommended as far as store bought goes. The shelf life is only 90 days after opening so many more Mai Tai's will be drank in the coming months. I did my own sugar syrup (1.5:1 so not quite rock candy) and used DeKuyper Curacao as it was the ONLY option they had in stock. I asked if they had any Senior hidden in the back but they said only one shop in the area (kinda far away) had any and it seemed they weren't going to be restocking it. Does anyone know if there's some sort of shortage of this for any reason? Anyway, my first drink was 3/4 oz lime, 1/4 sugar syrup, 1/4 orgeat, 1/2 curacao, 1 oz Ron Zacapa 23, 1 oz Barbancourt 3 star. It was tasty but a little on the citrusy side so for round two I upped the orgeat to 1/2 oz. For some reason it seemed more rummy this time (maybe my pour was a little heavy). Both were yummy drinks regardless and I look forward to continued experimentation with different proportions and rums. Maybe getting Coruba into the mix or Appleton 12/El Dorado 12 as others have suggested. Bottom line, classic drink, classic tunes on the hi-fi, it's been a nice evening. |

You know I have to agree - I finally tried it and didn't have any regret when I had to finally throw it out. Maybe I'm too used to BG Reynolds'? Anyway this is what I'm drinking, 2 weeks into a 4 week cleanse and protein diet, so I haven't had a cocktail in about 2.5 weeks. :( |

Mai Tai with Appleton Extra and El Dorado 12. Using a new batch of homebrew orgeat and I need to find the right balance with the curacao and lime juice -- this first drink is a tad to citrusy and some of the rum flavors are getting lost. Going to take a couple more Mai Tais to get in the zone but I feel up to the task. I have been dieting the last couple of weeks and this is my first drink in a while so I will probably be a cheap date tonight. |
