20230208_084514 "Clear Skies and Tropical Winds", a clarified milk punch that doesn't fall into the trap that so many do of being agonizingly sweet, and "Bonaparte's Loss", an aromatic drink with that comes to you shrouded in a cinnamony fog bank, at Undertow in Phoenix AZ.

20230207_192910_1_1

Also a "Sounds of Sinners" with this groovy ice cube in it

20230207_195446

T

Does that "Bonaparte's Loss" use dry ice for the fog effect? I really like using it for the spectacle too, but here it is banned for use in drinks at any public venues. The danger is if somebody happens to swallow even a small piece it can burn a hole in the stomach. Great photos!

[ Edited by TIKIGIKI on 2023-02-08 13:26:27 ]

I'm not entirely sure how the effect is achieved actually. The girl who prepared the drink was working on the opposite side of the bar from where I was sitting and I couldn't really get a good look at her with all the activity right in front of me. I don't think it was just dry ice by itself; I heard some kind of machine running full throttle as she was making it and the fog itself had a very strong aroma of ceylon cinnamon to it, which I'm not sure how you'd infuse into dry ice.

T

Then I suspect the "fog" was pumped into it from a bar-top fog-machine that uses dry ice but only the fog goes into the glass, to be held in by that lid. CO2 fog is heavier than air and sinks, so would fill up the glass. Great effect anyway!

T

Well, it sure does have that bubbling dry ice look to it.

Would think they would need to tell you if dry ice was in this drink as it would stick to your mouth if you did eat any of it as well.

It's a good day when not one, but two of our favorite magazines arrive via snail mail, the old-fashioned way. We can now catch up on all the news in the world of instrumental surf, thanks to The Continental #34 from Sean Berry and Double Crown Records. Then we can sit back and relax with the Tiki vibes of Exotica Moderne #18 from Ken Holewczynski and House of Tabu. We went straight to the "Cocktail Hour" page and mixed the Brother Cleve Sour, crafted by Brian Miller in honor of the late, great music and cocktail legend ...

Brother-Cleve-Sour_h

Pick up these cool mags at doublecrownrecords.com and houseoftabu.com, then check out our recent blog post on the top news of 2022 that pays tribute to Cleve and other lost legends ... https://wp.me/p1xHjT-7c8

Glass from Exotica Moderne contributor Justin R. Cristaldi of Lukekini.com and author of Tiki Triangle, who put together a nice tribute to Cleve in the latest issue.

Brother Cleve Sour

1 1/2 oz pisco

1/2 oz orgeat

1/2 oz pineapple juice

1/2 oz lemon juice

1/2 oz lime juice

1/4 oz cinnamon syrup

1 dash Dale DeGroff Pimento Bitters (or allspice dram)

1 egg white

Shake once without ice and once with ice, strain into a rocks glass with a small handful of ice cubes, and garnish with an expressed lemon peel.

MaiTaiDrink I recently bought that bottle to drink. Not bad I like it. They have Pina COlada, Blue Lagoon, and few others, I plan to try them all

Those beer glasses are hand-painted too! Fine items! Not exactly "Tiki", but perhaps you could seek out some Roman beer for them? The most popular by far is IPA, which has taken the recipe from the traditional India Pale Ale, and has transformed it into Italian Pale Ale. It's pronounced “EEpa” rather than spelled out.

The later version of the Donga Punch has become one of my go-to cocktails. Better than the version in Sippin' Safari, IMO.

Donga Punch

• 1½ oz Martinique Rum • ½ oz Lime Juice • ½ oz Grapefruit Juice • ½ oz Falernum • ¼ oz Passion Fruit Syrup

Oh, I don't think I've had this version. Thanks

I spotted it in the Plastic Paradise doc a few years ago. It's at about the 34:35 point when they pan across old bartender notebooks. I think it's from Mariano Lucidine's time at the Chicago Don the Beachcomber.

hang10tiki you have a wonderful new creation in the drum but where is your drink?

On the post above it :)

My twist on a Don the Beachcomber classic for National Cocktail Day. The same unique flavors of the distinctive Pearl Diver's Punch, but served up in a coupe. Like the original, it's a complex blend of rich and savory, spicy and rummy, tart and creamy. The flavors are more concentrated, but it's still very easy to sip. I hope Donn would approve. Okole maluna!

Pearl-Diver-Cocktail_sq

PEARL DIVER'S COCKTAIL

  • 1/2 ounce gold Jamaican rum (Hamilton Pot Still)
  • 3/4 ounce Demerara rum (Hamilton 86)
  • 1 ounce gold Puerto Rican rum (Bacardi Reserva Ocho)
  • 3/4 ounce Gardenia Mix (aka Pearl Diver Mix)
  • 1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon falernum
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Pulse blend (or shake vigorously) with crushed ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orchid.

I can't wait for Swanky's upcoming book, "Searching for Don the Beachcomber," to learn the full story of the Tiki and cocktail legend. Get more info at Donn-Beach.com

Some drinks from this weekend

Piña Humosa
my riff on the Scorpion Reef (posted above)
1/4 oz Mezcal
1 3/4 oz Tequila
1 oz Pineapple Juice
3/4 oz Lime Juice
3/4 oz Ancho Reyes
Top with 5 dashes Angostura Bitters
This is something I could drink under a palapa on a beach in Mexico. On the Caribbean side of course, that would make it slightly more Tiki.

Blackbeard's Severed Head
By Tom Morgan and Kelly Hiphipahula Reilly. From "The Home Bar Guide to Tropical Cocktails". If you don't have this book yet what are you waiting for???!!! I mixed half of this recipe.
3 oz Kraken Spiced Rum
2 oz Appleton's 12 Year Rum
1 oz Ancho Reyes Liqueur
2 oz Torani Passionfruit Syrup
2 oz Lemon Juice
2 oz Lime Juice
Shake vigorously, stir an a big splash of Club Soda. Add a float of Mount Gay Eclipse Black Overproof Rum. Garnish with a flaming lime shell and a sprinkle of cinnamon for sparks.

I love this drink! With ≈16 oz volume and about 6 oz alcohol it probably should be 3 drinks instead of 2, I'm a lightweight it made me a bit tipsy LOL
