151 Swizzle at the Mai-Kai's Molokai Bar last night. Truly memorable. When I asked if I could live there, Kern said "No!" I think he was worried about his Molokai maidens. He's a smart man. |

Enjoy the Pufferfish, nui 'umi 'umi! If you're still having trouble finding the Horchata Fugu, try the BevMo on Rosecrans on your way home. We've found it there before and their website says they currently have it in stock. |

Last night at the Molokai bar: First, the special Rhum Barbancourt cocktail (created for this Hukilau week only) by Kern Mattei. I'm going to have another one this afternoon, it was very good. Second, the Cobra's Fang. Third, the Shark Bite. Here's the lovely Molokai maiden Roxy delivering my Barbancourt cocktail: |

The Below Decks, what rum did you use in that? I made one recently for the first time using Koloa spiced (as per 5 Min of Rum suggestion) which is unlike any spiced rum I've ever tasted. I imagine using anything besides that would be an entirely different cocktail than what I had. Curious which you used and how it was. Last night I had some friends over and I made them Luau Coconuts. Third time this week making those with different rum combos. The first time I went by the bums suggestion of Virgin Islands rum but found it to be way too mild of drink. None of the other flavors besides coconut came out to play. So I tried it again with Flor de Cana the next night as I've found most everything I've ever made with Cruzan is better when using Flor de Cana in it's place. That gave it more depth. Then last night I did Flor de Cana gold with Plantation white and that pretty much nailed it. Much more interesting drink which I now prefer over the Mai Kai's Moonkist Coconut. This may be my new go to for when I have company. Forgot to take pics which is a shame cuz I actually put effort into garnish :( |

And for my Captain Vadrna's Grog I used Old New Orleans cajun spiced rum, which I brought back with me from NOLA. I don't think anyone yet imports it into California (or at least I haven't yet seen it), which is crazy since its been on the market so long and is pretty well thought of. I still think it's the best of the spiced rums (which isn't saying all that much since I generally don't go for spiced rums). |

Does anyone else HATE this Hamiltons Jamaican as much as I do? It is in my book as one of my bottom 5 least favorite rums of all times. Drink ruining garbage. Anyone want whats left in my bottle? I would rather drink Cotton Candy Bacardi :( |

I can't deny that I'm interested. I figure that Hamilton can't be terrible - at least average at worst. Rumdood was pimping it on his instagram a few posts ago, so I figured it had to be okay. I'd at least be interested a little taste when/if our paths cross. Neat, how does it taste? What could you compare it to? Follow me on Instagram [ Edited by: kkocka 2015-06-16 19:25 ] |

I thought the same, anything Hamiltons must be ok. The more I learn about rum the more I seem to disagree with Ed I think... Everyone has their own opinion, and it is possible my palate is not as distingushed (his favorite agricole is Niessen and that is my least favorite). When Hang10Tiki was at my place over xmas, I let him taste it and smell it. It has a funk to it that I just can't stand. I know, most people say Smith & Cross is too funky for them, but I love that stuff. It is different with the Hamiltons Jamaican. Other rums that have the same funk that I can't stand are - St George Agricole and Duquesne Agricole. It must be something in the production of the rum, I wish I knew what made that flavor. Any rum experts out there know what I am talking about? What causes that flavor? Anyway Keith, I will save it for you and my bottle of St George and you can have them both at Oasis (or the next time you are in SD). I would rather that they go to someone interested than just sit around my house. |

I've been thinking about getting one of those, but not sure if i wanted to invest the money if they're as fragile as I've heard. How hearty are they? I've heard they break easily with use. Been using a thin barspoon to "swizzle". |

Cesar's Punch. Thanks Hurricane Hayward for sharing the recipe. I had just a smidge under 2 oz of Barbancourt left so I was able to pull it off and with the homemade grenadine I made last night this cocktail has a pleasant balance. Not complex or mind blowing and not something I'll be soon to revisit but could definitely work as a simple party punch. I'm sure they weren't serving them in pineapples at Hukilau but I just cored one so figured I'd make a drinking vessel out of it. |
