I got an unexpected gift in the mail from Hang10Tiki this week - a 1973 "Family Favorites Hawaiian Cookbook" and the 1973 New Hebrides Red Cross "Island Recipes". Looks for some recipes from these books here soon. Thanks Jon :D

Mad Dog
Glad the package made it
Have fun
I can't wait to see what ya make

Jon

The Hawaiian book is mostly "Faux Hawaiian" food from the 70s - cocktail weiners in orange marmalade, etc. Many of the recipes include MSG as an ingredient  Very entertaining.
The Island Recipes is actually a reprint of a 1947 book. Contains recipes for Turtle Soup, dishes made from "avocada pears", paw paws, choko, breadfruit, taro, and grenadilla. The recipe for "A Good Touring Curry" calls for 1 tin of "Square Meat" (can't find out what that is? Some sort of Spam?), 1 tin of "Ox and Palm" (a corned beef), and New Caledonian crab. Very interesting!

:o

A nice top loin steak wit South African smoked seasoning, fries And a Greek salad with feta. Not a masterpiece but very good.

What is in South African smoked seasoning?
that may be a whole new cuisine, I have yet to try.
Thanks Trav!

The seasoning is from Trader Joe's and comes in a handy grinder. Very very good. Here is a description from the website.

South African Smoke begins with African-grown paprika that is slow-smoked for 48 hours over a sustainable African hardwood called Acacia Saligna, commonly used as barbecue coals. This process enriches the paprika with a smoky, roasted flavor that evokes the South African braai, or barbecue. The smoked paprika is blended with sea salt, garlic and basil and packaged in a grinder, giving you fresh-ground flavor in every twist. Use it as a rub for meats or veggies prior to cooking, or keep it on the table in place of everyday salt & pepper. You’ll find this spice blend only at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s, where we’re selling each 1.76 ounce grinder for $2.29.

Looks great Trav. Thanks for the info on the new seasoning

Brazilian Feijoada (fay-ZWAH-da) Black beans with pork (loin), pork (bacon), pork (ham), and pork (Linguiça - Portuguese sausage) Served on white rice with the traditional orange slice. “This is a dish of bold temptation and prompt surrender for carnivores” - Leticia Moreinos Schwartz.

I prepared some Huli Huli chicken last night after returning home from a “going home to Oahu” party for a friend. He shared his recipe with me in exchange for my huapia recipe. His was ridiculously simple- oj, pineapple juice , salt. sugar and plenny ginger root sliced/grated as fine as possible. I marinated the chicken pieces (boneless) in a baggy overnight and grilled em in my Weber this afternoon.Served it with some steamed rice and washed it down with a variation of a “Planter’s Punch” I added some bitters, Cointreau, and a dash of Maraschino liqueur.
Course we had Huapia fo dessert. Wow!

Pictures David?

Sounds great Dave!
I made Cream Cheese Stuffed Pumpkin Spice French Toast for Saturday morning breakfast

I needs me some of that, right now!

In my never ending quest to take common dinners
and gourmet the hell out of them, I went to my local butcher to get a special fresh ground mix
of top sirloin & Pork for a meatloaf, I even made my own homemade Sourdough Breadcrumbs

With this version I tweaked the recipe by adding a bit of allspice to the mix
(This tasted so good, I will be using it from now on)

Fancy Meatloaf with Bourbon & Maple glazed carrots, fresh Herb gravy & mashed potatoes
