What? No National Rum Day posts?

Here's one I keep coming back to: The recent acquisition of Swedish Punch allows me to finally enjoy the Doctor Cocktail, which has teased me from the back of the Smith & Cross bottle for years ...

Shake 1 oz each of rum, punch and lime and strain into a chilled coupe.

It's deliciously tart, rich and funky. If you want some serious punch, try the version in "Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails." Ted "Doctor Cocktail" Haigh's namesake drink doubles the Jamaican rum to 2 oz.

Cheers, Ted!

Then I rediscovered the BG Reynold's Pineapple Molasses bottle in the fridge, and made a Devil Reef...

...and then decided to make a daiquiri with Xaymaca, subbing the molasses for the simple syrup. I think Appleton 12 would work well, too.

Daiquiri using Appleton 12 and Pineapple Molasses. This is very enjoyable--the flavors work better together than the one I made yesterday with Xaymaca

I don't have the book yet; any of those recipes utilize the Pineapple Molasses?

A couple of drinks from my newly-acquired copy of "Minimalist Tiki": The Reverend's Tai and South Seas Sleepwalker

While waiting out the storm, I revisited one of my favorite Hurricane recipes. Created and posted on The Atomic Grog in 2015, it's my take on what a Hurricane could taste like using classic Mai-Kai ingredients. Here's an updated version with a few slight adjustments in the rums. This goes out to all our friends in the path of Dorian ... stay safe!

THE MAI-KAI HURRICANE
(By Hurricane Hayward, The Atomic Grog)

  • 1.5 ounces Demerara rum (Hamilton 86)
  • 1.5 ounces aged Jamaican rum (Appleton Estate Rare Blend)
  • 1 ounce dark Jamaican rum (Kohala Bay blend)
(substitute 0.5 ounce of El Dorado 12 and 0.5 ounce of Smith & Cross Navy rum)
  • 1.5 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1.5 ounces passion fruit syrup
  • 0.25 ounce fassionola
  • 0.5 ounce rich honey mix
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash Pernod or Herbsaint

Pulse blend with 1 cup of crushed ice. Serve in a Hurricane glass with more crushed ice. Garnish with three cherries, two red and one dark.

Here's the original story and recipe ... http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2014/07/15/tales-of-the-cocktails-signature-drink-packs-a-wallop-but-can-it-tame-a-hurricane-inspired-by-the-mai-kai/

Nutty Ocho Rios for National Macadamia Nut Day on Wednesday.

I like Hilda & Howard's idea of including the recipe

Nutty Ocho Rios
1 oz White Rum
1 oz Jamaican Gold Rum
3/4 oz Orgeat
1/2 oz Macadamia Nut Liqueur
1/2 oz Lime Juice
Garnish with a pinch of Nutmeg

Created by Shane Paule of the now defunct Isla Bar in Austin TX. A little sweet but good

A couple of original recipes from TC's past:

Blackstrap Betty

The Ho

This one's inspired a variation which you can look for on my drink thread once I've tested it.

Featuring three strong Jamaican rums, here's a Hurricane to be reckoned with. Like Dorian, it's powerful and complex. Proceed with caution.

HURRICANE DORIAN
(By Hurricane Hayward, The Atomic Grog)

  • 2 ounces Plantation Xaymaca Special Dry Jamaican rum (86 proof)
  • 1 ounce Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black or Gold rum (93 proof)
  • 1 ounce Rum Fire Overproof Jamaican rum (126 proof)
  • 0.5 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 0.5 ounce passion fruit juice or nectar
  • 1 ounce passion fruit syrup
  • 0.5 ounce fassionola
  • 0.5 ounce ginger syrup
  • 2 dashes Boy Drinks World Passion Fruit Bitters (or Bittermens Elemakule Tiki Bitters)

Pulse blend with a heaping cup of crushed ice. Serve in a Hurricane glass with a sturdy straw.

And, of course, be sure to contribute to Dorian relief efforts.

Okole maluna!

1/2 oz Cruzan Blackstrap Rum
1/4 oz Licor 43
3 oz Pineapple Juice
Juice from 1/2 a lime
