Special Planters Punch featuring Hamilton (don't call me Demerara) Rum ...

Had an excellent Old Fashioned at McCormick and Schmick, CeCe had a Mojito. Went to Trader Sam’s for a couple of Longboards for me, CeCe had couple of Shrunken heads. They still have plenny S H mugs.

Went to a place in Bedford, NH called Taipei and Tokyo 3 just for something to do on a dark Saturday evening. Pleasantly surprised by how strong they made our volcano bowl. Not to mention their snow roll sushi was top notch.

Cut and paste....in case it goes away:

2 parts Kirk and Sweeney® 12 Year Rum
¾ part fresh lime juice
½ part maple syrup
1 part ginger beer
1 dash of Angostura® bitters

Add all ingredients in a shaker except ginger beer.
Add ice.
Shake well until chilled.
Strain over fresh ice.
Top with ginger beer.

Glassware:
Double Rocks

Ice:
Cubes

Garnish:
Orange peel

They just opened a new Tommy Bahama's in Jupiter, Florida. Been thinking of going.....

Owl, my wife and I really like the happy hour food and drinks at any of the three T B”s that we frequent ( Newport Beach, Laguna Beach. and Palm Desert). A good place to chill. Let us know how your visit to the Jupiter location goes-should be out of this world! Btw try the pina Colada cake -nuttin like it! The recipe is also on their website although I have not attempted it yet-It’s a little bit complicated and time consuming.
The Newport and Palm Desert locations use to have some tiki but they got rid of it all some years ago when they remodeled. Barkeeps told me that they trashed most of the mug collections. The retail store sell some Hawaiian merchandise but the overall theme is Caribbean.

Last night the wahini and I went to the Tacoma Cabana for drinks. I had a Corn and Oil followed by a Shrunken Head she had a couple Mac Nut Chi-Chi's really good drinks. Tonight after dinner went back for a Three Dots and a Dash then a Swizzle of the Damned, damn good. My ku'uipo had a Rum barrel.

Jason and Robin won a trip to France in March, something to do with Plantation Rum and I gotta say Plantations' 20th anniversary rum is awfully good, and while they're in Paris he will be guest bartending one of the nights at the Dirty Dick Bar.

As the bartender was shuffling some bottles around on the top shelf, what did I spy but 2 bottles of Ed Hamilton left over from the prior Sunday's Rum Rhum Club! I tried some of the 151 neat (as my drink was being prepared) and I felt like I was 22 tasting straight alcohol for the first time. WOW that is some strong shit! Yes less smoky, yes more of a punch. I'd like to try it again at home in one of my own drinks, but I sort of have the feeling that I might not like it as much as the Lemon Hart, or maybe I'm just used to LH.

INGREDIENTS IN THE OLD JAMAICAN COCKTAIL
2 sprigs Fresh mint
1 oz Fresh lime juice
1.5 oz  Appleton Estate Reserve Rum
.75 oz Pure cane simple syrup
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Champagne
Garnish:
Mint sprig
Glass:
Highball

HOW TO MAKE THE OLD JAMAICAN COCKTAIL
In a shaker, gently muddle the mint and lime juice. Add the remaining ingredients except the Champagne and fill with ice. Shake, and strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice. Top with Champagne and garnish with a mint sprig.

no abita, but am enjoying a pint of Hopitoulous IPA from Nola Brewing Co.

First time making or trying this drink and I really thought I would enjoy it more. I don't see any dedicated discussions about this one so I may start a thread for it when I have some time.

Mike - I always make my own Falernum. This helps out the Three Dots immensely. Tweak the ingredients and mix it to your liking and you will find that it can be a tasty drink.

Three Dots & A Dash is one of my faves.

I do tweak the recipe, mine runs as:

1 oz lime
1 oz fresh orange
1 oz 1:1.25 honey mix
1/4 oz pimento dram (home made)
1/4 oz falernum (Taylors)
1 1/2 oz agricole
1/2 oz demerara
3 or 4 dashes of bitters

Blended

In comparison to Luna - I found comparing Taylors to homemade falernum, Taylors was preferable because it's got a lime & clove flavour without a lot of gingery zing.

My homemade pimento dram is subtle, which can suit the drink too.

Doubling the lime / orange / honey you get a bit more fruity flavours to work with so prevent the drink being quite small (with lots of ice).

I spy in your picture the Clement in the back, IMO it's a bit light & if paired with El Dorado 12 it may have lacked punch (they are still both great rums) - you could alway try 50:50 agricole & demerara if you wanted it heavier.

I favour the combos of Clement VSOP & LH151 or Saint James Rhum Vieux & El Dorado 8 (the LH151 heavies up the drink with Clement, the SJ Rhum Vieux is heavier itself).

FYI, the Mai Kai SOS is a great tasting alternative if you don't like the agricole taste or don't have it on hand :)

AdorAdam, I don't think Taylors Falernum is available here, at least I have never seen it.

I've recently picked up some Fee Bros (not available in the UK) & some Bitter Truth - I'll get round to posting my thoughts eventually.

What are y'all using?

I like my Falernum to be dark and cloudy. I think we do have the old bottle of that here. I don't think it has any flavor though... I really like to make my own, you can tweak whatever recipe you are using to suit your tastes. I try to always have some homemade stuff on hand.

I made my own recipe after combining a few off the internet.

It looks like you're in San Diego, in which case any BevMo will carry it. I personally and strongly prefer B.G. Reynolds' falernum but settle with Taylor's because it doesn't spoil outside the fridge and I can get it at a moment's notice.

Thanks Ad and Luna for the tips. I followed a recipe I saw on the Raining and Pouring instagram which specified ED 12 and Clement VSOP. When comparing the recipe to the Total tiki app, I found the ingredients and proportions were identical but Berry calls for a blend whereas RAP says shake like mad (which is what I did). My two skimps were using Tropicana carton OJ and not fresh squeezed (I usually use Trader Joe's fresh tangerine juice in place of OJ with great success but was out) and I used Fees falernum. I recently picked up Taylor's Velvet Falernum which I have preferred over Fees in the couple recipes I compared them, so was trying to work my way through my old Fees bottle. Next time I'll definitely stick with Velvet. And going with LH151 instead of ED 12 to give it more punch sounds excellent to me.

I've really grown to love St Elizabeth's and enjoy spicier drinks but felt the proportions of this one were off balanced and it could use more sweetener. And as you point out, it's also a small drink, so doubling up on the juices and honey sounds like a move in the right direction. I shall tweak and report back.

My 4 year old grapefruit tree has white grapefruits size of a bowling ball all over so I am ready for my cocktails that call for white grapefruit.

Trader Vic Daiquiri
Kevin's version.

2 oz silver rum
1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz Maraschino Liquor
1/4 oz simple syrup
combine with ice, shake, strain, pour into cocktail glass, no garnish.
love it.

Tonight we sampled drinks from The Mai-Kai (Fort Lauderdale), Tiki Mondays With Miller (New York City), Frankie’s Tiki Room (Las Vegas), Royal Kona Resort (Hawaii), The Rum Line (Miami Beach), The Broken Shaker (Miami Beach), and Spike Mendelsohn (Miami). All were competing in "The Art of Tiki: A Cocktail Showdown" at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, hosted by Emeril Lagasse. And the winner was ...

We're feeling a Smoked Banana Daiquiri to mix things up a little this weekend. Recipe posted on our Rum Mixology blog by Zac Overman. http://rummixology.com/smoked-banana-daiquiri-escapism-in-a-glass

1 1/2 oz Denizen Merchant's Reserve Rum
1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
3/4 oz Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal
3/4 oz Giffard Banane du Bresil
3/4 oz 1:1 Simple Syrup
1/2 Ripe Banana, Sliced
1/2 cup Crushed Ice

Blend all ingredients for five seconds and pour into a hurricane glass or tiki mug. If you are feeling extra creative, garnish with a banana dolphin.

Three dots and a dash do over.

Followed the recipe AdOrAdam posted on the previous page and I think it's an improvement over the Total Tiki version but I much prefer a Jet Pilot, TV Navy Grog, or 151 Swizzle over this which I think are the drinks closest resembling this flavor profile. Might try one more rum combo before I give up on it tho.

Hot buttered rum, sharing with a friend sitting around my backyard fire pit.

We drank two versions - original with Mt. Gay Eclipse rum, then Cruzan silver with a splash of lime. Pretty good with both rums, although the gold rum is more traditional. The batter takes a bit of work to make in your kitchen, but the end result is worth the effort. And the batter keeps a LONG time in the fridge. If you find yourself using it too slowly, freeze it.
