Aloha everyone! I was following some old conversation at Tiki Central about the artist Lewis Vandercar. I am a member of the yahoo newsgroup for Lewis_Van_Dercar. I have uploaded quite a number of photos of his paintings & sculptures. I also have a link to my yahoo photo album. We are trying to build a repository of photos. There is also a sculpture of a large Tiki at the entrance of his Miami Studio. You may have to type this in manually (not sure) as the link is not working right or just register at yahoo & search Lewis_Van_Dercar under groups. Boy, you go to Tiki Oasis, plan on getting on the Tiki Central boards right when you get home, and BAM! two months go by. Life... I tell ya.... Aloha and I am excited to be here (finally!). This is a wonderfully active board and [holds up her three middle fingers] I will promise to do my best to keep up on new posts. A little introduction: I've chosen Haole'akamai as my screen name because I defintely feel like a foreigner when it comes to Tiki/Polynesian culture, as I've only skirted the scene, but I'm really excited to learn more and more. And I thought I'd do a little self promotion, which I hope to live up to, by adding the "witty, charming" part. [uh, yeah, by the by, if I totally screwed up the Hawaiian syntax/spelling - let me know - I'm not proud....] If you went to TO5, you may remember me from the Best Dressed Pirate contest - I was the Pyrate CanCan Dancer. I met so many wonderful people there - freindly & fun-loving. Next year, I definitely want to stay at The Caliente Tropics; our hotel was way too far away from all the good stuff. I'm interested in all things vintage/retro, and Polynesian Pop especially. I enjoy costumes, dancing, reading, and boogie woogie & exotica music. I have four cats and volunteer with a local animal rescue group. Halloween and my birthday are my favorite holidays. My husband & I recently bought a Craftsman house (built in 1923) that we are trying to restore to its former glory (the backyard, though will eventually be a Polynesian Paradise, w/a 57' Bocce Ball court). I am a Barrista with Peets Coffee & Tea, but I'm working on getting my credentials to become a middle school mathematics teacher. WHOA!! Hey, didn't I say this would be a little introduction? heh heh... I better stop here.... so, hi. :) [ Edited by: Haole'akamai 2005-07-08 15:33 ] |

Hello all, Thanks for the welcome! I hope to put together a shutterfly account this weekend and try to post some pics. I just carved one with a huge tongue that I think you all would dig. A little about me: I work with chainsaws and carve spontaneously (no plans or drawings). I like the raw energy of a chaisawn tiki and the thrill of just carving what and where the wood takes me. I am a marine biologist by trade and work to manage sharks, tunas, and billfish for the Federal Gov. I specialized in shark morphology in grad school, and have worked on the water my whole life (much of the time as a commercial fisherman). I base my works off the god Ku, the fishing god. I'll try to work out some pic posts tomorrow.... Gman |

Wow. What a cool place this is. I've been lurking for far too long here, and now I've decided it's time to come out and finally become a member. I love it. I'm Ward. I'm an animator/animation director for a place in Atlanta, GA, called Primal Screen. I'm married with 2 kids. I love animation and graffiti, and the tiki culture is another one of my loves. I also collect old things, mostly ephemera and cool books from the 50's and 60's. It's an unhealthy obession, I'm afraid. Anyway, I have a blog where I talk about art and animation and the like. It's a fun diversion. You oughta stop on by. It's nice to be here! |

Time for me to make myself known I suppose :) This is my third post I believe and I am finally coming out of the woodwork to say Aloha! I'm fairly new to the entire tiki experience. Well at least in my home anyways. But I have always had a big love of all things tiki and tropical. I have had the extreme pleasure of meeting many fine folks here at TC already at the Ona Tiki Bar opening a couple weeks ago. Some of the nicest people I have ever met were at that party and I look forward to getting to know and perhaps even meet more of you soon! Currently we are in the process of renovating the backyard for our garden and tikis. It's a long road but very well worth it as today, for the first time in weeks, I had the chance to sit and truly enjoy the soothing waterfall sounds and the lush foliage. No contractors and no heavy lifting today! Woo! There is SO much to inspire me here at TC and I cannot wait until we can have our very own opening. ( should be soon - I'll be posting about that in a day or two!) Sorry it's taken me so long to introduce myself, but it's been incredibly hectic around here as of late. I'm sure you all know how that goes! Love being a member here! |

Hello all! I'm yet another new member, and new to the idea of thinking about "tiki" as anything other than my knowledge of the Kon Tiki here in Tucson, which is someplace that I've always enjoyed going to, but had never really given it the thought it deserved. My current interest was sparked one night while I was bored at work, and I was surfing the web, looking for interesting things to do on an upcoming trip to LA. I was looking for a specific, and very stylized 50's coffee shop (which I later found out as a prime example of the Googie style) and happened to stumble from site to site, till I found Tiki Central. I'd always known about Tiki, but hadn't ever consciously thought about Tiki. Since I was going to LA, I was looking for various places I could visit, and things I could see. Two places that caught my eye were the Tiki Ti and Oceanic Arts. I'll add another post regarding my visits to both those places, with pictures. I also went to Disneyland, for the first time since 1983, and what I wanted to see most there was the Enchanted Tiki Room, after reading all about the remodel here on Tiki Central. It was tons of fun, and my girlfriend and I enjoyed our Dole Whip Floats as well. I wanted to pick up a Pele mug, but unfortunately they were out of them. I instead picked up one of the 11x14 "Waking Jose" Shag prints that they were selling. For me, so far, Tiki has been all about something fun and interesting, but it has touched something inside of me that had been dormant. I want to thank all of you for being here, keeping the torches burning for those who have only just or are yet to discover the spirit of Tiki. I'm happy to be able to find a place to share my own Tiki journey. As for my screen name, I chose it to reflect one of my other passions, which is coffee. Not necessarily Kona coffee, but I figured it would work :) http://www.coffeegeek.com is one of my other main hangouts online. Chris [ Edited by: Kona Chris 2005-07-20 02:18 ] |

Hi all - I'm new to the boards, been on about a week now. Looks like Tiki's are alive and well here:) I've been into Polynesian decor since I went to WDW in 78. I was 5 then and loved walking around the grounds of the Poly with all of the trees, torches and musical tikis around. Disney managed to sink that into my head and here I am today, many years later, looking for that same experience. c-ya! |

Hey, I'm new. I've been at least vaguely aware of tikis for as long as I can remember, and the heads on Rapa Nui are always cool. About a year ago I actually got a chance to visit Maui and bought an 8" tall hand-carved Tiki at an outdoor bazaar in Lahaina. So far this is my only tiki, though I certainly intend to get more -- the polynesian art bug bit me, and bit me HARD. I'm a college freshman right now, so money is a little bit tight, but a new store just opened at the local mall selling statuary and masks from across the globe, predominantly African and Polynesian. Really good prices too. So how do I get a six-foot tall Tiki into my dorm room...? |

Hey everybody ... My name is DrMig, and I'm a Tikiholic. Anyway, a little about me. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley (Canoga Park, to be precise), which used to have as many Polynesian-themed restaurants as it now has porn studios. When I was a kid, they were where we went on Big Family Nights Out (unfortunately, I can't recall the names of any of them - if anyone wants to refresh my memory with the names of some long-lost tiki restaurants in the Valley, please do). Later on, some friends introduced me to their tiki obsession and got me a copy of Tiki Road Trip for my birthday. So, while I'm fairly new to the culture, I feel I've known tiki all my life. It speaks to my Inner Keiki, I guess. Nowadays I'm in San Diego, which I've called home for almost 10 years. I work as editor of a magazine for people with disabilities. When not working, barhopping, going to punk shows, or slacking, I'm home-schooling myself in the art of mixology. My apartment's too small for a bar, but my longterm goal is to redecorate my (currently empty) balcony into my own personal oasis. I hope to get some ideas here. That's all for now. I'm glad to meet you all. |
