I have been slowing turning my basement bar into a full blown tiki bar. I have a thatched roof around it and I just scored my biggest find yet with a massive tiki light that I believe was made by Orchids of Hawaii many years ago. I am planning on hosting some tiki socials soon to meet other tiki freaks in the North Carolina area (contact me if you are interested). My tiki bar will never be complete as half the fun is finding new stuff to put in it! (The other half is emptying the tiki mugs!!)

I am an artist with a focus on tropical scenes and tiki bars; my niece bought the magazine for me for Christmas, thinking I would enjoy the images. I did, but the must fun I had was reading the biography of Trader Vic! I've always loved tiki and tropical bars, but never knew there was a tiki tribe out there until reading Tiki Magazine. Naturally I'm hoping someone can point me to a decent tiki themed bar or restaurant around the Portland area. Preferably one that's not overly crowded. Anyone familiar with the area?

I have been reading some threads and I guess I consider myself a "mid-century tiki-ist". I collect and sell midcentury furniture and housewares so that is how I came to appreciate the genre. I don't collect tiki mugs, but instead have a collection of Don Ho glasses, straw weave, and Raffiaware that I use in my bar. Last summer my husband and I hit the mother lode while thrifting. We found an entire set of 9 band Frankl rattan ( 4 pc couch, 2 arm chairs, and a table)for $300. I had a brief notion of selling them in our shop since we don't have room in the house, but was knocked back into reality and decided to keep them and create an outdoor tiki area. We had already scored 4 red HW Ashcraft stools and were just waiting to find the bar...the next weekend we found it. Home made but vintage.. a steal for $79 bucks. The only bad thing is we live in Portland so everything is now tucked away in the shed until the sun comes back this summer. So throughout the monsoon season you will be able to find me at the Alibi and Thatch.

I actually made my first post on the general forum (I'm building a Las Vegas-themed tiki bar in my basemenet complete with casino games, vintage Vegas memorabilia and a wet bar). But I wanted to make my official "Aloha" here, too. I'm glad to have joined and am looking forward to meeting many of you select few who still carry the tiki torch, those who continue to appreciate all that was (and is) about the culture - from the lifestyle to the music to the drinks. It's pure Americana, and it can't be lost. I smoke a pipe and listen to Bobby Darin and drink Sidecars, if that gives you an idea of where my heart is. Although I've been asked why anyone would want to "live in the past", the rest of us know better - it's not about living in the past but rather living with the past and appreciating that the tiki culture is one of substance, uniqueness and sincerity. Behind its tongue-in-cheek bird calls and plastic palm trees there exists part of the American soul that has been lost, and I believe that this is a genuine movement to regain that. So let's celebrate and enjoy life for what it is. Looking forward to many more posts!

Serendipitously, I have always been fascinated by Exotica. I have numerous Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman recordings in my music collection. "The Book of Tiki" by Kirsten is one of my favorite books. Being new, maybe this question has been answered before in another forum, so humor me. What is the difference between tiki culture and exotica? It would seem that exotica is a broader category.

My Sweetheart Lance Wagner and I are getting married in June and it is an all TIKI Wedding. We are active in the cabaret community here in Seattle and pretty much everyone involved in the wedding is either a Burlesque performer, Pin Up Girl or Cabaret Producer or Emcee. All are into mid century lifestyle and real excited about the wedding. Babtette La Fave is Lance's Best man, and Vincent Drambuie will be on the groom's side, I have Fleur Du Mal and Tamara The Trapeze Lady and gogo Amy ! Flower girls include Goody Goody and Lynn Rosskamp. The best part is an "Almost Virgin" sacrifice to honor the Tiki Gods performed by Lydia Mclane and her sweetie Lee. Any ideas? We welcome them! Please google "Tiki Pipeline" by Lance Wagner on You Tube it is one fun Tiki Film and can demonstrate our Tiki Pin Up Girl photography. It is a compilation of the best of the NW in Pin Ups! Our studio is in Seattle,we live in the Kindergarten room of a mid century elementary school, all artists live here. We were fortunate enough to shoot Alex Borestein's DVD Cover in a Pinn Up Style. Shee is the voice of "Lois" on "Family Guy" and was Mad Tv's Mrs. Swan. Google that TOO! Anyhoo, kids it is real nice to be here, I look forward to making friends in the community! B brokeassbuilder Member delta b.c Joined: Jan 16, 2007 Posts: 48	B brokeassbuilder Posted posted on Tue, Jan 16, 2007 11:22 AM my first post! i think ive died and gone to heaven this place is fantastic! ive been buying and selling hawaiiana for almost ten years keeping the odd pieces for myself,being a collector of diffrent things i only have so much room in my house. until i started collecting vintage cars then i had to get a barn ...then times got tough and had to downsize from three tiki bars to none from 6 vehicles to 1 a 1946 dodge that will be tiki themed and only collecting: tiki stuff, 49 chopped merc models,and early eyeglasses and flight goggles,and an ever so growing vintage clothing collection thats me in a nut shell i hope to learn alot buy talking to you great people maybe even find a few things for you aswell!

I've always thought I was the only one who got off on TIKI till I bought the Tiki book a couple of years ago. I have loved tiki since I was a kid growing up in So Cal in the early 60's. My Grandparents had an apt in Honolulu and their love for all things Hawaii was contagious! Their home here had a very tiki pool in the back with a very tropical yard. I grew up learning landscape design and my favorite theme is...TROPICAL!!! I have always designed tropical yards to try to recreate that tiki feeling we all know & love. Anyway, I enjoy hunting out tiki type hideouts and in the past enjoyed Don the Beachcomber in Hollywood, Trader Vic's in SF, Kono Hawaii in Santa Ana, and of course, the Hawaiian Islands. My new home is decorated in tropical themes & the yard I am planning is the ultimate tropical getaway!! I look forward to meeting many of you at the various functions this year and, of course, establishing contacts for the tikis I'll need for my new backyard! Thank You very much! Kahuna PS: Does anyone remember the 'Holo Wai' miniature gold course in Orange, CA? It was the coolest mini golf ever! Right on Glassell St near the 22 Fwy. It had a sunken city with waterfalls, tikis, & grass shacks. I would love to see if anyone has pictures.
