Tiki bar = mixed drinks / Sports Bar = Beer and a shot.

Tiki bar food = exotic dishes from the far east / Sports bar food = Wings from Buffalo.

Sports types are more likely to associate Party City with tiki than say Witco, Not you, just sayin.

But hey if you can put the two together and love it go for it.
Me, I'm more smoky quite tiki lounge type.

Good luck.

In my general experience, the sports bars I've been to have been to only get noisy when it comes to bigger games. It's pretty quiet if its during the week (or at least general noise level).

Tiki Bars and sports don't usually mix well. On the other hand, the Tiki references on the Luau Cindor Pinterest page are indeed worthy ones.

Thanks, I've been trying to mix things up so as not to make the page more eclectic.

I'm posted pins for Tiki decor, and more authentic art from the Pacific/Asia/Africa/etc. Then adding a lot of retro pins. I added some music surfing, swimsuits, and things that if don't quite cross over into Tiki, rub up against it.

As for the b'ball, I'm trying to keep things retro. I'm trying to avoid pinning stuff from current players as much as possible (though one or two got through).

Hope y'all like it.

Aloha! New guy intro... My name is Jason, live in the exotic far western suburbs of Detroit. Married, 2 sons. Work for Ford in prototype.

I started off interested in finding ideas for redoing our basement to a tiki bar type atmosphere, but then I found the food/drink list and got distracted...
Thanks for a great resource site!

ALOHA! This is my first post. I live in the Central Coast of California, married for 26 years, have two teen-age boys and love tiki bars, mixing and drinking tropical drinks on my own, outrigger paddling and ukelele. I'm part-Hawaiian, so these things all help me feel connected to Hawaii wherever I am. I'm stoked to be on tiki central & looking forward to enjoying tiki culture with the rest of you! Ahui hoe!

Hello Everyone! My name is Henry, I am an artist that specializes in Polynesian and science fiction art. I tend to do quite a bit of tiki art as well.

Hi, I'm Carly, married with a 1 year old son here in Sarasota, FL. I've been lurking for a little but now, but I'm pretty new; I've never been to a tiki bar yet (though I'm planning on visiting the Mai Kai at my first opportunity. I just got a book by Sven and I'm on my way to becoming a true tikiphile.

Hey dudes and dudettes, I'm a newb around here (but have been lurking for months) and the intro thing seems to be the place to start, so here goes nothin'.

My name is Seth and I'm a 27 year old tiki novice in San Diego, CA. I grew up in the Chicago burbs watching Gilligan's Island reruns with my grandparents and sneaking swigs of Bacardi from their basement bar. you could say I fell in love with the idea of year round fun in the sun and umbrella laden drinks at a prettyy young age. While thrifting in Point Loma one day I stumbled across a Tiki Farm mug by Squid and really it was all down hill from there. I was in love instantly. I'm pretty much tiki crazy these days and have amassed a tidy little collection in the better part of a year. Obviously I love collecting mugs- though quality ones in the wild seem rather hard to come by in these parts. I also really enjoy Coco Joe's pieces and have recently got quite addicted to finding and playing old Hawaiian/lounge vinyls.

Anyway, I love this website and the cultural community it both facilitates and records. I hope to become a contributor in one form or another here soon. Mahalo!

Welcome to all the new folks and glad those of you who have been lurking are now posting. Sounds like you all have interesting backgrounds and plans for embracing Tiki in your homes. Don't forget to post any before, during and after pictures of your bar projects in the Home Tiki Bar forum. CHEERS

My god. Someone else that is actually my age....I never thought I would see this day, and a Squid fan to boot! Welcome!

Hello all,

I’ve been lurking for a few months and have finally made it official by joining Tiki Central. My girlfriend and I live in western Massachusetts, are in our early 40s and are big fans classic cocktails, particularly those containing rum.

Last summer on a visit to Chicago (my hometown) we were having a drink at Three Dots and a Dash and discussing what to do with our basement, which we recently reclaimed after a tenant moved out. We looked around at the bar and it all became crystal clear – tiki bar! Being fans of mid-20th century pop culture, cocktails, escapism, exotica, and kitsch, it’s perfect for our lives.

I’ve drawn so much inspiration from all the photos of home bars posted on Tiki Central and I’m grateful for all the detailed information. I’m just getting started on our basement bar but will post regular updates and photos to document the process and maybe even provide a little inspiration to others. I’m not sure how long it is going to take but I have a plan and a name for the bar – Cosmic Coconut.

Hey, thank you! I have noticed that I... er, WE, are on the low end of the age spectrum when it comes to the tiki cummunity. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, I mean we have plenty of more seasoned mentors, right? Also, it often strikes me while out tiki hunting and sometimes competing for finds with um, older gentlemen, that when I (we) am his age my collection will be absolutely epic. Anyway, I'm stoked to be here and it certainly helps that everybody seems pretty damned friendly. Now to just put some feelers out to the San Diego community and maybe make a few new friends...

Punk Ass Kids! :D

Welcome all
Have fun and cheers

Hello Tiki Centralite,
So.. after a very long look in the mirror I came to a very real conclusion.. I, Paul, from Shadow Beech am addicted to tiki.... man that felt good! Knowing this about myself and having recently moved from Canada to Europe, I've become fuelled to make this account. What a great time in my life to explore all things tiki in Europe!! My plan is to basically learn, share on my Instagram account and tiki-out as much as I can with you fine folks. Any tiki recos would be greatly appreciated! I'm currently based out of Amsterdam, NL.

Hi all:

I've been lurking for a few weeks. I'm a San Diego native who now resides in Washington DC. Many of my family members have lived in Hawaii, so I grew up shoving hula costumes, tiki/mugs, gourds, and other island paraphernalia out of the way in order to make room for my toys and books. It's taken almost 40yrs for the tiki bug to catch, which it did only by way of the craft cocktail movement. Weary of bourbon and rye, I'm moving on to rum-based cocktails and quickly decided that I needed "just a few" tiki mugs to serve them in. Hah!

After several days of looking at the staggering variety of tiki mugs on ooga-mooga, pinterest, and ebay, I slowly began to consider dusting off the ole pottery skillz to see if I could make a few serviceable mugs for our home bar :) 12hrs later I applied for artist-in-residence status at a local ceramics studio. Shortly thereafter, my bf announced he would sign up for a beginning pottery class at the same studio, and just last night, I decided that I want to try and teach myself mold making and slip casting so we can have our own "house" tiki mug that friends can take home with them. Our friends' reactions have ranged from skepticism that we'll follow through, to immediately asking for custom mugs for their own home bars. Admittedly, when I slow down to think about what I'm taking on, it seems naively optimistic and more than a bit daunting.

I am blown away by this community's willingness to share knowledge and am slowly making my way through all of the ceramicists' posts. I don't know how much I'll be posting, but thought an introductory post here would be useful.

Welcome to Tiki Central, rumflip! Don't worry about any of it, just dig in and let tiki take you for a ride, it's a helluva fun time here with all of us crazies. Jump in with both feet and enjoy the camaraderie here and let us know how you're doing with your projects. I'm sure you'll eventually be posting some awesome custom mug photos. We definitely want to see your work, finished and unfinished. Let us know when you're ready to set up a huge mug sales booth at one of the big tiki events around the country. We'll share a few drinks with you to help you forget how tiki took over your life! ha...

Cheers!

Time flies when you're having rum.

Hello everyone - I'm another OLDER (yeeeach!) tikiphile that started collecting in earnest oh, round about 1990 or thereabouts, I blame a set of "Tiki Leilani" mugs for my descent into tiki-madness found in a second-hand shop in the early days of the (sadly missed) Fell's Point before it took a bath and decided to be "Inner Harbor Eastside."

Anyways, 100's of flea markets later, I designed my very own tiki escape pad covered in tiki mugs, salt n peppa shakers, masks, bamboo, Coco Joe statuary, and rattan furniture (oh, and three pinball machines, another inescapable hobby of mine)!

I come from the "purist" side of the hobby, having cut my teeth in the pre-internet days where you didn't know what mugs were out there until you pawed through dusty store shelves, local GoodWill stores, and moldy cardboard boxes on someone's lawn. I probably paid .25 to 1.00 for everything I found, my fondest memory being an entire box full of Orchids of Hawaii mugs (probably about a dozen) of various designs that were .25 each!!

The new mugs are cool, and I'm glad there is a resurgence of tiki interest, but I prefer the "original" tiki mugs and their vintage decorative counter-parts over the other products from the likes of Tiki Farm etc. (of course, I own some of that too and I love the designs!).

I got to the Kahiki in Ohio the week before their "farewell party" - I felt it more fitting to pay my respects during a "regular night" so as to take advantage of being able to see the entire space minus the crowds of people that attended for that sad farewell evening a week later.......

At 47(?!) I still can't believe I've aged that much, but still feel as giddy and young as I did the first time I turned over a pale-brown piece of pottery and locked gazes with another snarling tiki that would soon join my growing collection!

I've been to Trader Vic's in Vegas, and hope to visit Tennessee's Omni Hut and Florida's Mai Kai very soon.
You can add me to the vintage architecture, photography, writing, roadside attractions, spook houses, pinball/arcade games, outsider art, low-brow/hotrod art, kitsch, nudie, LP/music, classic cars horror/psychotronic movies collector categories also!!!

Have a great weekend everybody - gonna be a cccccoold one!

Hi, I'm a Tiki baby. I've been researching 50's/60's culture and managed to find this forum. I immediately fell in love with the culture. I'm in my late 20's and hope to start a small tiki collection soon! Though that maybe harder then I hoped, it seems Virgina beach area is dried up of tiki culture :(

Welcome, Tiki Baby! Great to see a 20-something carrying on the tiki madness. Keep the faith about finding stuff - don't miss any opportunity to check out a garage sale, estate sale or thrift shop and things will turn up. So much more rewarding when you have to hunt for it!

I'm keeping my hopes up. I'm counting on living in a military saturated area, plus I'm visiting my aunt in March and I'm looking forward to making a detour to Chins!
