Beautiful work - as always!

I really like the feel of this piece. I'm learning a lot from watching your step-by-steps. Thanks for the inspiration!

coldwarspacemonkey I haven't done my black velvets in the traditional way of light strokes on the fabric. If you are on facebook Gwen Rosewater does fantastic BV paintings. She posts finished pieces, there. I've requested steps by steps, but she may be too busy to offer that. I'm glad if mine will inspire you to pick up a brush or pen and to go to work. There's a lot of joy in doing art.

Thanks for the tip! I'm not on FB, Tiki Central is about as close as I come to social media, but a quick search on line showed some of her work. Good stuff! My experience is mainly traditional oil on canvas - this will be a change - but I'm getting ready to give it a shot.

BTW - Happy Birthday! (I think we share the same one.)

OGR

Nice velvet work Wendy.

Just do it CWSM...I have been doing it on Black Bristol to get a feel of the light/dark-reverse negatives....to me it's kind of the opposite of traditional

coldwarspacemonkey Happy Birthday CWSM! I think it's fun to have an 8/8 as a birthday. I started with oil paints and after years of cleaning brushes with solvents changed to acrylics. The main difference with Black Velvet is that you paint from the front to the back because you can't paint over existing paint or it will show up. So different from back to front.

I hope you will take progress photos to share.

Or Got Rum? Thank you. It's fun to do one for our home. Easier too.

Thanks Wendy! I picked up supplies yesterday, so I'll get this kicked off shortly. The only foam board available had a peel and stick adhesive on one side - have you ever used this to adhere the velvet? If anything worth looking at comes from the first attempt I'll post some photos.

OGR - thanks for the encouragement!

-Nelson

Well guess what, I didn't know such a thing existed. If you can make it work that would be wonderful. Something new for all of us. Just find the way to brush the velvet to make it feel soft and then start with the fabric at the top of the foam board and wipe the cloth down making it adhere. No wrinkles allowed! You need 4 hands!

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. Hopefully it won't be too much of a problem on a smaller piece, say 8" x 10", but I wouldn't want to try it on anything much larger. Not sure even 4 hands would be enough!

Sorry I missed your birthday--I was at the Iowa State Fair that day and ate a pork chop on a stick for you.

coldwarspacemonkey I'm looking forward to seeing what you do.

Hamo I celebrate the entire month, so you didn't miss it at all. Thank you, funny thing is Dan and I were just talking about pork chops today and now I find your message. Could be we get some this week! On a stick would be different!

Love it

Hope you don’t mind if I repost it on this page so I could see it

Always fun to see your name pop up.

Hi W

What are u working on now??

MadDogMike I am just about to start a new painting for Heather and her husband. It going to be huge and a challenge. I'm excited to do it. Thank you for asking.

We just got back from a family reunion in Oregon. While there we visited Munktiki and Dead Man's Isle. Paul and Miles gave us a tour. Miles showed us the bar and Paul showed us the art gallery from the basement to their home upstairs. All of it fun to see and enjoy. Both are great places. Miles makes all the tiki mugs now.

Head up to Duane street in Astoria, Washington to see the Munktiki Gallerys and Dead Man's Isle tiki bar and restaurant. They are terrific.

Wow

Great pics

Thanks

OGR

That's a Double WOW...

hang10tiki you are welcome. It was a dream come true to see everyone and to tour Munktiki.

OGR I think I said that a lot while we walked around.

We have Sven Kirsten's newest book. It's going to make us want to go to Palm Springs. DSCF6116DSCF6117

I'm working on a Wish List black velvet. I'm hopeful of finishing it this year and then I'll post. Cheers, Wendy

Awesome

Love the movie pics

The girls on the drums must be made of rubber

Hi Dan-0

OGR

Sweetness on the clips and cool Dan Sighting with Sven's newest creation...Wish I had thought/seen that movie when I did my B-Movie art series this year. Last year was Classic Universal Monsters..(shown I Think) and this year was Classic (most Goofy) B-Movies.

hang10tiki Dan loves old movies, once in a while I watch one with him. This was one of those.

Or Got Rum? Dan loves all the old movies, aliens, monsters, detectives, on and on.

I have completed a Black Velvet painting for Heather and Steve Crook. It's time to post the steps.

I asked Heather to draw their wish, and she really gave me a good one to work from.

She and Steve went through all my past paintings and selected all the parts they wanted in their painting. Drawings (2)

Once I had this drawing I asked them to find reference photos for each item. They did that well too. They wanted their deceased cats in the painting. Black Cat 2(1)Calico cat (1) They are fond of birds and picked out those plus plants. I printed them for reference. P1090786 They wanted this entire painting but with their own choice of mugs. Tiki tray and hanging lights (2) Then they chose these 3 Disney tikis. I didn't want the painting to look the same as Mike Remmel's so I told them I would have to change all the colors. They agreed. Tikissss (1)Tikisssss (1)Tikkis (1) I printed more photos and then cut them out and put them on the black velvet to see if they fit. P1090793P1090798 They own the huge Robot/Alien mug I made in ceramics. They wanted it on the tray along with a Don the Beachcomber mug. They want him to have a mustache. Small details will make this their painting. P1090799 Once I had every request printed or cut out (example: 2 tiki torches) I photographed it and printed it out for reference. The painting will change over time but I have all I need to get started. P1090807

This is going to be fun.

OGR

Taking big swings equal big results.

Amazing! I love the way you process you painting planning!

Or Got Rum? I love park swings otherwise I'm not a swinger??? Thank you!

MadDogMike you and I love sharing our steps. Yours are terrific.

I've begun to paint. I started on the eyes and noticed the shirt I was wearing had the same round, white, circles. I love coincidences. I show how I use a spike in wet paint to add texture. This works well on black velvet.

P1090817P1090818P1090821P1090828P1090836P1090846P1090854

One step forward so many more to go. Also, I return to each part to make it better as I go, this Kava Kava man's face is far from done.

The next steps involved printing a photo of a Toucan. I cut it up and used it when painting the bird. Then I changed from the zebra tray to a tapa tray. Got just the front done.

P1090856P1090857P1090858P1090859P1090862P1090863P1090868P1090870

Part 6: Loading the tray with tiki mugs. Some of mine and some are from others.

P1090884P1090886P1090920P1090926P1090929P1090930P1090934P1090948P1090950

Part 7: I use Dan as a model for my art. P1090955 Bird, spiking for texture, tiki's body and shading. P1090953P1090961P1090962P1090965P1090967P1090969

I've left space for the next part, a cat on his shoulder. They have 2 cats that have passed and want them in the painting. Another fun part.

Part 8: Time to add one of two cats requests. Heather wants a stare down between the bird and the cat. But as of this post the cat is looking at you not the bird. I will fix this in the future. P1090977P1090979P1090980P1090981

Now starting on all the small parts.

P1100013P1100014P1100019

Heather wanted "pops" of florescence paint. P1100033

Both those eyes glow, I was just shining the light on one.

Dan calls this Disney tiki Carmen Moranda because of the fruit bowl. I'm starting with the bananas and changing the side they hang on and the colors.

P1100035P1100042P1100046P1100050P1100052

Part 11: more steps on the black velvet for Heather and Steve. I tried the kite one way and settled on another. Touch ups and new areas and color. Texture by a spike.

P1100053P1100055P1100068P1100078P1100082P1100088P1100093P1100094P1100095

Lots of steps. Painting and then using the spike. Doing white decorations and highlights.

P1100098P1100104P1100106P1100108P1100113P1100126P1100127P1100129P1100130P1100141P1100142

It's funny that I didn't notice before that the tongue (sp?) is above the upper lip. I pulled up this photo to check. OK.

That's pretty colorful. Very cute, Wendy. Good job. Channeling your inner Ruzic!

Hey GROG, fun to see your name show up. No one does it as good as Ken! I had fun doing these Disney tikis as requested by Heather and Steve.
