H10, I do love how my bowl is shaping up, and I was excited to see the pics of the underside. Sandbartender, Wendy's exact words were, "It will be a nightmare to glaze."

Wendy, Ray Wyland's most recent video is about Tiki Bob mugs, and naturally, you're a big part of it:

https://youtu.be/bGMZ-oWXhwY

Hamo- thanks for the link
Nice to see Wendy get some Bob props

Those little details kill me every time. So good.

It's such a thrill to get so much mail and you are all males too! Today after pouring the crawl mug etc. we took off for the hills. We were in the gold country when we talked to a random stranger. Turned out he was Brenda Ray's first cousin. She's a tiki friend and is here on TC too as Brenda's Tiki Bar I think.

Dan took this photo so I can play a joke on Brenda on fb. She is in a train on her way to Chicago. She's not going to the Super Bowl she's gone to see the tiki bars there during the polar vortex. That girl knows how to have fun. Meanwhile I'm keeping her cousin warm.

hang10tiki I think this is the fifth one?

MaukaHale what would I make without them, oh yes there's always Tiki Bob.

Hamo- thanks for the link, I also put it on my Gallery page. I didn't even think of it. I do so love Tiki Bob and he has been upgraded, photos soon.

HopeChest and they are the worst to glaze.

Time to rest, Wendy

She's got quite the timing. It's so cold up here the CTA is starting fires on the rails so the trains can keep running.

I hope she packed a parka AND a balaclava. And some serious gloves. It's -27f here this morning with windchills down to -55f.

Sandbartender, I looked for a good photo of Brenda's to post showing the cold but so far her photos in Chicago are of drinks in bars that are open. The tiki bars were closed when she arrived. We don't need to wonder why.

I am working on the Sacramento Crawl mug, Harvey's shakers and the Wish List all at the same time. It's been hard to find time to organize my photos and to post.

Here's how many of the Harvey's shakers I have cleaned up and are drying.

I will try to post more soon. Wendy

For years I planned to do a Diver's Helmet but it wasn't until Theo Stool made that his wish that I did them. I altered a bowl for each one and that took a day to do it. So now with so many wishing for one I decided that it was worth sculpting and molding one.
Here is the start of the steps.

Sculpting the Diver's Helmet / Space man helmet. I made a shape I can use for either. Both will be fun.

So I did a basic shape that I can then add clay too.

Robert Mitchell made these tools for me and I used them while sculpting the helmet.

Since Romo Clay is reusable I picked my volcano sculpt to destroy. But first I cut off the tiki that I like. Maybe a necklace one day.

I dug out the hold where the skull of the diver or alien will go.

I flipped it over. This bottom will now become the top of the helmet.

Romo Clay number two is the best for sculpting. However I started with four and then three. I'm still mixing them together. I did this with a hammer because 3 and 4 are super hard.

Next I want to make the bottom and this clay is so hard I use a knife and hammer

to remove a brick of clay.

I worked on the bottom to smooth it and then I

flipped it over to work on the top by adding and hammering clay into place.

Then I did the same with all the sides.

Now that the general shape has been formed I needed some number two clay that I would be able to smooth. I had to cut up my mermaid sculpt for this task.

I just started to fill in all the dips and indentations.

As I worked I cut more and more off of the girl.

I used Robert's tool to drag clay into place and to make it smooth.

This photo shows how deep the hole goes. It almost touches the back wall.

Here's the look with a flash.

I keep going over it looking for indentations and then I fill and smooth them.

The best part of sculpting is that I don't have to worry about trapped air pockets since this will never go into a kiln. It's just been made to use for making the mold.

I will be so happy when I can make these helmets with more time going to creating the do dads rather than the dent. Cheers, Wendy

I love diver mugs! Can't wait to see you work your magic on this one.

Shakers look good
I think I saw mine
Lol

Diver, oh my

Working on my next tiki
Worked on him from 6am- noon

========================

It's time to catch up on some posting. Since I've shown the art of making molds so many times I'm going to skip the steps and just show a few photos and the outcome of a mold making marathon. I love Tiki Bob and this will enable me to continue to make him and alter him in many ways.

Dan and I made four Tiki Bob molds from my own sculpt many years ago. They all began to leak so badly that before pouring I would have to plug them with clay. It got to be too much work. So I destroyed three of them. One I kept because it's face is my Tiki Bob version and I'm about to change it for the next three molds we will make.

I still had the original sculpture so I brought it out. Using a vintage Tiki Bob as my model I re-sculpted the face to match.

Here is how it will not look.

Side view. I did not place the eyes. Those I will add each time I make one.

I added clay to the top and bottom of the sculpt so that he would be taller.

I did it again for this mold and one more.

During this marathon I also made the Harvey's mold. They all went into the kiln shed were for a month they had fans blowing on them 24/7 and each day a different side was rotated so the fan would hit a new surface.

I couldn't do this work without Dan and he also cleans up after we finish. I have the best husband.

A month later I poured the three molds.

Two looked like this and

then there is the one on the right. He is super tall.

These photos show the change from my Tiki Bob to the newer more vintage version.

I just need more hours in each day and new hands but I just keep on going one step at a time. Cheers, Wendy

I like Bob's new nose job, but also I'm glad you still have one mold with your original sculpt.

Oh, my!

I’m LOVING the new Bob sculpt- can’t wait to see what sort of magic you work with it!

Hammo and Sandbartender thank you so much for your comments. It's fun to know you stopped by.

Here is the old style supercarved. Just having a fun evening doing whatever strikes me.

The new more original style Tiki Bob.

I add the eyes to each one.

I'm going to have fun with the new Tiki Bob. He's a whole new friend. Wendy

Wish List #8 this Fun Fake Elvis mug is for Lukekini K. Kalekala. Of course I made this one before the new mold had been done so there were more steps. This is one reason I did the molds.

Here is the original which is now in the collection of hang10tiki. I used it as a model and did the face for my fake mug.

I started by making a ball of clay without trapping any air in pockets.

Then I added it to the bottom with sticky clay to make it stay in place.

Then I sculpted it too.

The last step happens days later when the clay is firm. I carve out all the excess. I have to be really careful to not leave it too thick or to make it too thin.

Then it is going to dry slowly in and out of a plastic bag. This will prevent cracking. Cheers, Wendy

Wow
New Bob molds

An entire new line of Tiki Bob CevolaS
:)

Love your super carved Bob’s

And the Elvis Bob is amazing
Thanks again for letting it move to Vegas

Carved a lil today
Was 30 degrees in the garage
1st time I pulled out a lil heater

Then
Off to Frankie’s

Can’t wait to see the new Bob’s rolling out

hang10tiki that carving is going to be one of your best. Frankie's is looking good. Thank you for the photos. My favorites are those with you and SewTiki in them.

Update on Wish List #8 this mug is for Thomas Zocher. It will have the red flame on top. It will be the last one I do this way. The flames are as much work at a mug so NO MORE! I will still make the mug with a normal top.

The mold was never good enough so I fine tune every part of the mug.

I re-carve the woodgrain to make it deeper and I fine tune the zombie.

Here is his side finished.

Then I fine tune the other side. I either paint on a flower or in this case I add one and carve it.

Here is this side finished.

I'm on a roll now, working each day to make one crawl mug and to continue on with Wish List #8. Every day is fun. Wendy

I'm stuck wondering how I get on this list as well. That is one gorgeous piece of clay.

Hammo and Sandbartender. Dan is still downsizing his collection. He had me make some of those mugs for him years ago and now he's going to let them go. I will get back to you with photos later and you can choose what you want. No work for me!!! Wendy

Ohh, sounds great! Thank you!

Sandbartender Dan pulled out some mugs and Hammo is looking them over, when he's done I will post the rest for you to inspect. We are continuing to downsize. For the first time in years we have empty drawers and shelves. In fact we have sent off a lot of shelves to new home. Cheers, Wendy

Don’t sell the kitchen sink

Wish List #8 this Maori Lamp has been done for Alexis Antonio and she had approved it so another Wish is completed in the sculpting.

When I did the sculpt I did it blank so that I could hand carve and add clay to each one so that no two were exactly alike. That's what make is fun. Here are some of the steps.

A few years ago I made a whole lot of tops. They take a long time so I wanted to just have them ready.

After the lamp fires I will pick the best fit.

Maybe this one, maybe not.

John M. your wish will show up next. I can't ever remember how to spell your TC name. Cheers, Wendy

Amazing Wendy

hang10tiki thank you.

=========================

Sandbartender I have these Zombie Village mugs available for $100 each plus shipping or you can go on the waiting list for 2020.
These have been in Dan's collection since 2012. Time to send them on to new homes.

Wendy, I know you'll appreciate this:

I clicked on a random page of MadDogMike's craft thread and saw this:

Hammo, I didn't remember this mug and it's wonderful. He did a great job, it should be a run of them. I hope you posted it on his page too. I'll check later.

===================================

hang10tiki I hope you posted that on MDM's page. He is so animated!

Happy Valentine's Everyone. Dan became my permanent Valentine's in 1977. He's so good to me I think I'll keep him.

Oh, it would be fun to be that young again, however tiki keeps us all young. Wishing you all a day filled with smiles. Wendy

Awesome

Thank you hang10tiki.

Wish List # 8 continues with a project for John Mumford. I asked him to tell the story of his request. Here is what he wrote.

My brother David was an Imagineer for Walt Disney for 25 years. He's life was ended at age 46. The "Star Fish" was sculpted by the Disney Studios, in his likeness, to honor him. His star fish is displayed in "Mermaid Lagoon" at Toyko DisneySea. This was one of the last projects he worked on. He oversaw the construction of the lagoon. I wanted a replica to display in my tiki bar as a remembrance. John Mumford.

The photo is of the entire memorial. I am making a replica of the starfish for him.

I placed plastic wrap inside a starfish I found in a thrift store. This is help me keep the starfish hollow.

I used slip as glue and to keep out all the air pockets. I layered the clay until I thought it was 1/4th of an inch thick.

I trimmed off the excess clay then I

added bars so there are different ways to hang this on a wall.

I flipped it over and removed the plastic wrap.

I used this tool to pull up the clay to form the starfish.

The last step was to change the arms to match the position and size to match the picture.

Copying someone else's work is far harder than making your own design. I would say half the work is in tweaking the clay over and over again and even then it will not be a perfect match. I will do the best I can, fingers crossed.

Cheers, Wendy

What a fantastic tribute! And a great way to remember a lost loved one.

The start is looking good!

Wow
Amazing story and tribute

Whoa, wait a minute, John; your brother was the David Mumford, coauthor of Disneyland: The Nickel Tour? How fitting to have one great artist pay tribute to another.

Sandbartender it will be nice for John to see it each time he's with his tikis. I'm trying hard to make a good copy.

MaukaHale thank you. I've tweaked it over and over again and now I'm letting him dry. I think when his eyes are glazed it will look more like the original. Not seeing the white and black makes him look blank right now.

hang10tiki I agree.

Hamo Disney must have many artists because they are just a magical place. It feels really good to know they honored John's brother.

===============================

Wish List #8. This project is finished being sculpted. It will now slowly dry in and out of a plastic bag so that it will not crack.

All these steps took a couple of weeks. Looking at the photos makes it look like an hour. Tweaking takes a lot of additions and removals of bits of clay.

Wow, I had no idea I had added so much clay as I worked to make it match the photo.

I used a cutting tool and carefully removed all the excess so that it wouldn't crack.

John do you want the pencil permanently attached or just glued in place? It's one thing if bumped could break once you own it.

I hope it's ok. Cheers, Wendy

Looks great W

Butt are you sure a high fiber diet is the best choice?

hang10tiki yes it looks like he needs that addition to his diet. I shouldn't have invaded his privacy!

No big deal for some of you
But we don’t see it often here

Woke up to this:

Wendy it looks really nice. If you think glue is better then do it that way. I'm wondering if during shipping it might be better for me to attach it after its delivered? Let me know your thoughts.

Hamo, yes its the same David Mumford. In addition to The Nickel Tour, he and Bruce Gordon also wrote: A Brush With Disney: An Artist’s Journey; Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond (with Jeff Kurtti); and Walt Disney Imagineering: A Behind the Dreams Look at Making the Magic Real (with Kevin Rafferty and Randy Webster).

The Disney Corporation was very good to him. At his memorial, Marty Sklar spoke and Richard Sherman sang One Little Spark. It was one of his favorite songs. The project he was working on, when he became ill, was Journey into Imagination with Figment.

MaukaHale I'm so glad you think so. I tweaked it until I couldn't tweak it again. I would very much like to send it for you to glue. Earthquake putty might not be good enough because it moves when warm but real glue would be best.

I am moving on to other projects while this and others dry so it's still a ways off before it's glazed.

Wendy

Mornin W
