From shirts to rooms. We fixed up the Tiki Jungle Room after getting rid of some furniture. Psycho Tiki D knew we like the tapa cardboard and gave us a roll. We now used it plus some fabric from Kihei, Hawaii to decorate the corner of the Tiki Jungle Room. Cody McAllister made us shirts from the same fabric and now we can blend into this wall! Soon I'll be posting the steps to my latest black velvet painting but first we went on a trip. We visited Mendocino and Fort Bragg. It was our first time there and I'm already wanting to return. Here are a few photos, the best are from the Mendocino Botanica Garden. Fun meals. Cars in parking lots. It's great to go someplace in California that is so cool. Topped out at 58 degrees each day. Thank you for the visit. |

Thank you hang10tiki. It's time to start sharing the steps for my latest black velvet painting done for Chris Powell. He has a tiki bar with three friends that is located in Texas. They each have their own style of tiki pole to hold up the thatch roof. Chris has has had a mug made, a tatto and now a painting of his special tiki. Here are the reference photos he sent to help me do his painting. |

More steps for Chris Powell's black velvet wish. I'm doing his tiki set in a tropical garden. First I've started with his signature tiki. I paint and then use a spike to scratch the paint to make it look old. Here are the first three layers. I'm not done with the tiki but it's time to work on the foliage for a while. |

Hamo you have a good eye, I agree with you. It takes a lot of layers for paint to show up on black velvet. Here are a bunch of those layers. Doing Monstera leaves was a challenge the first time when I did them for Ari in Japan. Wouldn't you know it they were requested again by Chris. I just keep on trying. |

The black velvet wish for Chris Powell is finished and framed. I sure miss the "views" section on TC. As it is I can't tell if anyone looks at my posts unless they comment which has always been rare. Oh well. The last touches were bamboo, torches, a palm tree and stars. If he aproves it will ship out this week. The helper photos he sent to me showing his signature tiki. Ancestory.com introduced 3 cousins who hadn't even known about each other. My grandfather had 3 wives and mine was the last one. He had 21 children in total, my mother was his last child. Now a descendant from the first wife and one from the second wife have come from New Mexico and Ilinois to visit. Ruth the great great grand-daughter is a professional watercolorist, she gave us all a lesson. This is the photo we were all trying to copy. We didn't have time to finish but we came a long way and learned a lot. She also brought Dan and I a gift of one of her original works of art. I framed it and hung it in the tiki jungle room next to the chair she had sat in during our reunion.
We felt connected and loved each other right away. We also had a son, a daughter and a husband at the reunion and those words apply to them as well. [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-07-05 09:10:14 ] [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-07-05 09:11:01 ] |

OK, I am reading to start posting my progress on my entry into the swap. I went through my frames and picked one out. I decided to paint a Kava Kava Man from Easter Island. I touched up the frame since it's been in my frame collection in my closet for decades. I didn't have a lot of time to get this done so I picked out a subject that I had painted for myself. So I've had practice doing this guy. It is acrylic paint on black velvet. Painting on black velvet means one layer let it dry and then the next layer on and on. When doing the layers I pull a pick through the paint so that it has the texture of weathered wood grain. Time to post some more steps on my Kava Kava Man painting. I mapped out the design and then started layering. Time to dry. Done and ready to frame. I have never liked to put my name on my art. I try to hide it in the bushes but there's none here so I primed a paint pen and wrote it along the edge where it will exist but not show up. Before framing I use painters tape to clean off lint on the black velvet. Since the frame is deeper in the center I decided to use a wire. I'm showing all the little steps I've learned over the years. First use a nail to start the hole. Then to screw in the eyes I use a nail, less stress on fingers. Then I hammer the eyes to the center so they don't stick out further than the frame. The rest is easy to see. Just waiting for 7/23/23 for swap day. Dan emptied two shelves in the tiki jungle room. He asked if we could take down the mugs in the nook (while we are still young enough to climb up ladders. I said yes and he got right to work. After the mugs, shelf and wood strips were taken down. I puttied the holes twice, second time adding texture. Then I painted. We re-hung only the painting and I used tiny nails to secure it in place. Then we put the mugs on the shelves and in the dark photo, sorry, we put plants. Then in two other shelves we one mug that didn't fit and the first mug I made as a crawl mug. Another room that needs nothing done. Time to relax. |

We try to play every day. I'm so happy you could tell. On 8/9/23 Dan and I went to Calistoga first and then on to Napa. I wanted to visit a Geyser that I hadn't seen in over 47 years and then to see the new Tiki Exhibit by Otto and Baby Doe called Tiki Dreams. The day was excellent. Within 15 minutes of arriving the geyser went off. I don't know how or where I took possession of a 1940's post card from this location but I took it along. Then it was onto Napa. The Tiki Dreams exhibit is everything you could hope for. Well presented, interesting and so much fun. They even took over the Museum Gift Shop with something for everyone's budget. Mugs to clothing. Be sure to walk through a second and maybe a third time. There is so much to see you'll miss things and be surprised when you walk through again. It was special for me to see my yellow winking Tiki Bob on display. The trip was just marvelous. Next to the museum is a golf course. I had found it on-line showing the restaurant there had a beautiful view. Lakeside Grill. The food was excellent. We were seated on the patio. When we went to leave, I found a keyless car starter. I didn't need a joy ride, so I turned it in to the bar tender at the restaurant. Then we headed home. A perfect day. [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-08-28 18:28:04 ] |

Hi Hamo, we used to not only watch Huell's show we used to mimic him all the time. He was a comedian without trying. Here is a show I stumbled upon. Episode 7 It's on Peacock. I saw a Bamboo Ben sign and a whole collection of Frankoma. This was so much fun. I was afraid that at the end all the tiki things would be gone. Nope just displayed really well. Only the last two photos show the house after the "fix". The rest are of the house "before". I hope you all can watch this episode. Cheers, Wendy [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-09-02 19:03:41 ] |

I have a story to tell and a new mug to be released this month. Part 1 Jonice Frank the daughter of the Frank family who opened Frankoma's in 1933 was a friend. Together with Gecko'z South Sea Arts we brought back her War God. She has passed on but Frankoma's Pottery Company has survived with Dennis Glascock as the owner. A photo by Sven Kirsten. ![325292469_703482688092191_3869033679788064762_n] Here it is years later and I do a black velvet wish for Ryan Stowe and he tells Dennis he should contact me about making a mug for Frankoma Pottery Company. Dennis said Why not and now we have a mug coming out this month. [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-09-06 07:57:45 ] |

Joniece Frank designed this tiki for a few bowls and more salt and pepper shakers. Then there was a devastating fire (photos on page 1 of this thread). One little tiki survived and she sent it to me. Mike Loterbauer taught Dan and I how to make molds from this one little tiki. That started my ceramic history. I made a few bowls and salt and peppers. Now that Frankoma Pottery Company owned by Dennis Glascock has asked me to sculpt a mug for them I thought of something Dan had said. "Wendy there shouldhavebeen a mug made of this design". Dan was right. Guess what I have done. [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-09-06 08:37:08 ] |

hang10tiki it's so much fun to work clay again. Here is the start. Years ago Dan said there "shouldhavebeen" a mug version of the Frankoma saltshaker. I thought so too but never got around to it. Now I have taken the design by my friend Joniece Frank and turned it into a mug. The mug will be released on September 22nd and 23rd right from the company. More information about that to be posted as I post photos of the process. Once I decided and had the OK from the owner of Frankoma Dennis Glascock I went to work to do my part which was the sculpt. I figured out the size I would need to sculpt with the cast shrinking 10%. The shakers always fall over so I asked if I could add a base and would he please put FRANKOMA on the front. OK again. Then he said where to we cut the top for the opening, and I drew that too. Next I bought the clay that Dennis prefers for sculpts and began the long process of making each slab stick to the next. I love to use a vegetable chopper for both cutting and pounding. Then I began to cut the clay to shape it for the mug. Dennis requested the base be square, so I remembered to not cut off the corner. One step at a time. [ Edited by danlovestikis on 2023-09-07 19:57:34 ] |

Part 4: the carving of the clay begins. I started the sculpt on 9/2/22. It took 28 days to finish. Here are some of the first steps. It is harder to copy someone's work than it is to invent your own. I have to be careful so that if Joniece Frank were alive today she would be happy with this mug. She and I had a lot of fun together with Gecko. |
