I am so happy to have my computer with me. This is the first time I've had a laptop and so here we are in Barstow and I'm posting. Cool...it is freezing in the desert tonight. lunavideogames we will definitely visit Frankies and hang10tiki. Those will be our favorite things that we do but not in that order. hang10tiki thank you it's fun when projects are done and out the door. See you tomorrow. hang10tiki I've always wanted a photo of Dan and I and that sign. Dan likes it so much he wants me to print it and to hang it in the Buzzy Bedroom. ================================================ Well dang it, TC won't let me load photos. I guess those will have to wait until we get home. Tomorrow is our hang10tiki visit and I'll be sure to take lots of photos at their Honu Hideaway and yard. Thanks for the visit, cheers, Wendy |

I've been super busy at work and haven't had time to stop by but I apologize. (after all my nagging and all...) But all I can say is WOW! Wow. I wish I could enlarge my font to really scream it. Whenever I think you can't out-do yourself you do! I love the rainbow of Bob's. Sorry they are causing you so much work but I love them. And I still love that glaze that I mentioned a couple of pages back, the pinkish/mauvish speckled glaze, I'd love to buy one of those from you. I think the volcano with the faces came out absolutely fantastic!!! I'm jealous that Hang10 got a visit from you and Dan. If you even make it to the NY/NJ area I'd love for you to visit me. :) Everything else looks fantastic too! You and Dan do amazing work!! |

hang10tiki and LoriLovesTiki you both make me blush, thank you. Our visit with hang10tiki will I'm sure be the highlight of our time in Las Vegas. Jon your generosity will be spoke of for years to come. We had a great time. I was so impressed with the number of wonderful carved tikis that you have done. You are a great carver and a good friend. I tried again and this time posting photos has worked. Here are the best that I took of our visit with hang10tiki. We have just arrived and are hanging in the backyard. This is a Frankoma War God carving that Jon did but the photo doesn't do it justice. Jon gifted me with two beautiful glass tiki necklaces. Dan was overwhelmed by all of his gifts of ceramics and music. WOW! Look at this beautiful couple. 15 years and counting. I got to hug Jonelle's man. We missed her a lot. We are ducking so my ceramics in his collection show. In the impressive Honu Hideaway. The room is beautiful and so interesting. A view from the other side of the room. Jon you were right your phone takes great photos without a flash. Thank you dear friend for your time. You made us feel very special. When you visit we'll do the same for you two.Lori thank you for the invitation. You never know when that could happen. Maybe one day we'll meet up at Oaisis. ===================================================================================================================== Fixing the boiled Tiki Bob necklaces. When I'm working with ceramics I like to cushion them so that I don't chip them. So I save foam sheets. First I used a dremmel to open up all the bubble. Next I changed the bit to a larger size and I smoothed the paint. I had coated these with a mm of paint or more. Back upstairs for another coat of paint. This time I let them dry for more days and they were fine in the oven. I learned something. I just need to remember it!

Thank you Jon and Tiki Ano. I just spent an hour loading photos and typing. Then the Wynn took over my computer and made me sign up for wify again and made me lose all my work. So I'm seeing cross eyed and trying to do it again. We went to a lot of antique malls in Bakersfield and I found Elvis. Dan was happy to find these shakers, they are new to his collection. He practiced his snake charming skills. Dan thought it was funny to not warn me of the impending bear attack. We found a bunch of highly priced PNG tikis and left them there. On the way out of town we saw a pool shop with tikis. A fellow who works there carves them. I told him about Tiki Central. We check into our hotel in Las Vegas and Dan turned on the TV. What did he see a tiki in the background of this Two and a Half Men rerun. What were the chances that would happen? Dan barely escaped the aliens in area 51. Kele Dan spotted this in an antique mall and we thought of you. The Ethel M chocolate factory has a cactus garden that they light up for the holidays. We walked long enough to have the sun go down and the million lights to show up. We stopped at Frankie's Tiki Room to check on a mug for a friend. Running into Tiki Lee and having our visit with hang10tiki have made our trip. A must stop when in Las Vegas. All done and now it's time to turn out the lights and go to sleep. Tomorrow will be another fun day. Cheers, Wendy |

TikiRootsRocka you are so right in all you said. hang10tiki is keeping up with the over the top Las Vegas style. We loved his place and LV is an eye feast. hang10tiki so that's where GROG is. I've been waiting for him to show up here. I hope he chimes in soon. ========================================================================================================= Yesterday was another fun day in this city. Dan played Santa at the chocolate factory. We visited the conservatory at the Bellagio. In front of the Bellagio we watched the fountain show. At the end of the day we went to see the movie Captain Phillips. Excellent in every way. I highly recommend this movie. ======================================================================================= Now back to tikis. I have a confession. Before we left for our vacation we began to pour some projects.I found that Hefty makes 2.5 gallon plastic bags. They fit most of what I would pour so I decided to get ahead on the Wish List. At the same time I had a bowl I wanted to make on Speculation. So lets get started. First I choose the molds that I wanted to work with and we strapped them together. Years ago I went through a number of catastrophes trying to make a mold of my Missionary's Downfall bowl. I ended up with this giant mold that I cut in half and then chiseled out the sculpt. In the end I couldn't cast a bowl from it and just set it aside. I didn't toss it out because of the cost of the mold, the loss of the sculpt and the fact we never got anything for all the labor. So now I pulled it out and took a chisel to the inside part. My plan is to make a volcano bowl with more than one volcano. I've also learned that you can stop leaks from molds from the inside as well as the outside. So here I've rubbed clay into the breaks between the two pieces. We buy our slip in half gallons so I can add water and mix it up with my hand and shaking to get the right consistency. When I leave bottled water in the car and it gets hot chemicals that are unhealthy leak into the water. They don't affect the clay to I add them to the slip. Also when I have to add clay to the bottom of a mold to prevent leaks I put a paper towel on the bottom before turning it upright. That way the clay doesn't stick to the table and pull loose. We poured the bowl. I have also poured a Zombie Torch mug for Mondo-By-The-Sea. When I made those mugs with the flame on the top I got totally burned out after 30. I said then that I had made the flame for 50 so in the future I would make 20 more special orders of this mug. So as part of the Wish List I will take orders for these but the mug will not have the background and zombie done in the same color as the first run of 30. Front and Back. But in other colors. I can also make a mug version without the flame. But again I can't do any colors that I've done in the past. Dan the "will work for tikis" man is back at it. ================================================================================================================== THE WISH LIST #4 FOR CUSTOM ORDERS IS OPEN FROM TODAY UNTIL SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24TH AT MIDNIGHT. RULES I will do my best to fulfill your wish or wishes. If I am unsuccessful I will not expect you to take it or to pay me. For an idea of what I have made please look on at Gallery for my work and examine page 1, 9 and 11. http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=35609&forum=21&start=0&149 http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=35609&forum=21&start=120&149 http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=35609&forum=21&start=last& You should send me a PM with instructions. I will send you my email address and request that you send photo examples or rough drawings. I will tell you the cost and then you may decline or tell me to proceed. I posted examples of costs back in 2012 and those are one page 116. I also do black velvet and regular acrylic paintings. NOTE I am not a business. I do not take deadlines so if it is for Christmas you would have to give the person an under construction promissory card. I have a huge kiln and I work in full loads so I work on all the projects in phases. Sometimes it takes months before your project is finished. But it's all fun and you become part of the gang that has ordered for the current wish list. I also make my own spec projects along the way. I hope to hear from you! I wish for a drink bowl with a tiki bob, a severed head, a moai, a suffering bastard, a war god tiki, a bumatay tiki, and a vicious virgin around the outside and decorated on the inside with shrunken heads, lanai maori tikis, zombie village drummers, rat finks, missionary's downfall wahines, and hawaiian eye tikis - with a giant fez volcano insert in the center :) I wonder what that would look like? Seriously though, I am floored looking at these galleries of your amazing work. You are so creative and I am transfixed by your glazes! |

hang10tiki I hope you'll be doing the same soon. TikiHula I could do that! On this trip we found a FEZ vase that I thought was a perfect volcano size for a big bowl. We bought it. So your idea for a Fez Volcano is an idea in the works. The one we bought has a long name on the front that when we are home I'll research to see if it is a chapter that exists or existed. =========================================================================== Here's our Wednesday in the city. Gypsy Caravan antiques had some very rough tikis. Too big for our car. Two old goats in a showdown. We drove to Henderson to Lake Las Vegas. Dan had his hands full showing our friends the sights! The casino was shut down so we had the place to ourselves. Dan entertained our friends with an Italian opera. Next was a stop at Sam's Town and then dinner at the MGM and a walk on the strip. ======================================================================================= Now on to the tiki projects. We poured out the slip from the easy molds. For the Mondo-by-the-bay Zombie Torch we got out the siphon pump. One end in the mug and the other in the bowl. It's so nice to already have this figured out. What we didn't have figured out was how to empty this huge mold that didn't have locks between the two halves. Dan was pouring and then I saw the halves start to twist. We turned it on it's two sides so they were equally supported but the damage had been done. This truly is a cursed bowl. Emptied you can see the bases for the volcanoes that I'll be adding to these islands. If I ever use this mold again I will first drill holes and insert wooden pegs to make locks. That way the two halves will not move ripping the bowl. After being upside down all night I turned it over and looked at the damage. I will repair this. As long as the clay is wet it can be fixed. Now it's time to open the molds. =================================================================================== Thank you all for the visit and for the Wish List orders. I look forward to working for you. Cheers, Wendy [ Edited by: danlovestikis 2013-11-21 10:18 ] |

IF YOU NEED INFORMATION ON WISH LIST #4 JUST LOOK AT THE POST FOR 11/20/13 AT THE END OF THAT POST. =============================================================================================================================== TikiHula fun huh. When I saw the vase we just bought I thought the tassel looked like a lava flow. Then you brought it up, I think its a fun idea. I was shocked. Dan's a bit shy but he belted out an Italian pop song in an operatic style. He was very entertaining. WaikikianMoeKele you are welcome. There's always so much to read with the information highway at our fingertips. I don't read as many posts on TC as I would like too. Sounds like we are healthy rush! Your last project showed me how a micro carve will still show up well with glazing. ======================================================================================================================= This chocolate fountain at the Bellagio looks just like the molds as they empty out the skip. First Dan and now I'm playing with the Blue Man Group. ======================================================================================================================= When I took it out of the mold I found that there is a wall missing that I'll have to build. Meanwhile I started the repair on the bowl where it tore when the mold pieces shifted. Inside filled in and ok for now. The outside was also damaged so I dug out the crack making it big enough to fill. The internet here is very slow. Three minutes to load one photo so I'll stop here for tonight. TikiAno of course I made Dan pack up the clay projects for our trip. We are obsessed with doing our tiki work. I bet you have clay on your mind every day too which reminds me to check out the swap page tonight. I really do miss working on clay. We worked really hard the two weeks before we left so that I would have photos to post during our trip. I really do like keeping the show going. You have a fun show too. ==================================================================== What's up next? We went to the Pawn Stars shop on Las Vegas Blvd. It's not much like the show. They have a section you don't see on the show where you show your items that you want to sell. None of the stars work there. Instead they have t-shirts and their autographs for sale. It was like a shop that promotes them. Riding down the strip in the rain Dan captured this photo of the Paris Eiffel Tower. We went to see Ender's Game. Having read the book made it really easy to understand the movie. In the book the hero is 6 years old in the movie he is 13. The fun part was seeing Ben Kingsly as a Maori. ===================================================================================== Back to sharing another work day. I am able to flip the bowl over using a couple of flat boards that I've covered with plastic wrap so that the clay won't stick. Once I turned it over I was able to clean up the bottom. I still need to build a wall where it's missing. I opened the mold for the Zombie's Torch mug for Mondo-by-the-bay. The top is never thick enough so I add a layer of sticky clay. I check the opening to make sure the flame will fit. As the clay dries I will adjust it. I have to also leave room for the glaze on the mug. There is always a lot of work to clean up mold lines on a detailed mug. I touched up all the lines on the mug and added earrings. I added nipples. I cleaned up a tumbler by removing mold lines and then I indented the bottom. This same day I poured a couple of Tiki Bob mugs, short and tall. When I cut the tops off on one I exposed a hidden air bubble and possible bomb. I felt very lucky to find and repair it so that it wouldn't explode in the kiln. By the time I finish these Wish List projects the year will have changed. At the end of the day I had these cleaned up. It's always fun to get ahead of the Wish List by casting mugs before the orders come in. The first time I did this I wrapped all the casts in plastic wrap and all of them dried and couldn't be altered. I just carved the dry clay like I did for the swap mug. It's 9:16 in Las Vegas. I call that bed time. Good night, Wendy [ Edited by: danlovestikis 2013-11-23 21:23 ] |

mondo-by-the-bay, its been great corresponding with you. I'd love to hear more as you work through your project. hang10tiki Oh no call the graffiti police. Dan you dirty dog. ================================================================================================================= Hi friends, I'm super happy with the number of orders I've received. There are only a few hours left and then I'll close Wish List #4. I'll be having so much fun over the next few months sharing photos as I work through these projects. Four people have ordered the same thing, a cannibal bowl. I may need to sculpt these 3 different guys and mold each one. In the end that would work better than hand sculpting each one over and over again. ================================================================================================================= Today was our last day in Las Vegas. Tomorrow morning we'll sneak out of town early and head home to lots of new tiki projects. We did pretty well to find fun things to do each day. I hired Michael Jackson to give Dan dancing lessons but Dan just wasn't into it. Dan however did want to be King Tut and entertained a few tourists with his royal stance. He request to be called King Rooten Tooten. My favorite activity is to bomp gophers on the head. Yes I can see how cute they are but it's just fun to bomp them. I gave all my winning tickets to a little boy who was waiting for his turn. ============================================================================================================ When I cast it I didn't even think about this big area where the wall would be missing. However all things clay can be worked with so I built the wall. Now I had the three islands to work with. I added two volcanoes and the bases for three tikis. Front view and the back view. Picture this. The bowl is filled to the top with a Blue Hawaii drink. As those with long straws sip the volcanoes and the tikis are revealed. When the bowl is almost empty it will show the islands surrounded by blue water. That's what I thought up for the cursed bowl. I hope it will work and not crack. There is still lots more to do. ==================================================================================== Thank you for the orders and the visits. Cheers, Wendy |

WaikikianMoeKele maybe we can break the curse with this one. Your well wishes did bring us home safely, thank you. TikiAno it is so good to be home. We'll have a special Thanksgivakah tomorrow. We have Jewish friends who told us that Hanukah for the first time since 1888 starts on Thanksgiving. We are going to their home for a pot luck meal and good cheer. Romo's sculptors clay allows for fine detail but then you have to mold it to continue. I'll be doing more of that for the Wish List projects that were ordered. You wish is granted, more in progress photos of the Cursed Bowl. =============================================================================== The Cursed Bowl continues to behave. The large patch has held its place. I used this tool to round each piece of bamboo. I smoothed the bamboo with my big paint brush. I added the section dividers to the bamboo. I used this tool to do more rounding. Also to make an indentation at the base of each divider. The multi-wire tool makes nice lines that will fill with glaze to give the bamboo texture. The outside is all done. I decided to just do the same on the inside. Flat surfaces are never flat enough with glaze, so why not just mess it up. All done. Different angle. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. I am very grateful for all your comments and views this year. Thank you all for your support. I love making tiki ceramics while you watch. Many cheers for the holidays from Wendy and Dan PS I'll be back tomorrow, our meal isn't until 4 PM |

TikiHula I sure hope the cursed bowl becomes a sweet bowl. We are thankful for you too. I'll take photos at Dr. Tiki Mojo's Streng home today to share. A real tiki Thanksgiving. hang10tiki are you home and sleeping to recover from all the Gecko and Oahu fun? I'll keep an eye on Dan all day. Than you for all the fun photos. ====================================================================================================== Last major step in making the cursed bowl was to add clay to make the tikis. I started with noses and foreheads. I was at a small area and a hard angle in which to maneuver. I just went slowly adding small bits of clay. There's on bit on the tip of my finger. Added the frowning mouths and top knots to their hats. Close up. Side view and the other side view. Now it will need to dry very slowly while I work on the Wish List Orders. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE FROM DAN AND WENDY. WE ARE SO THANKFUL FOR ALL OUR TIKI FRIENDS. |

I have three Tiki Bob necklaces that are not as perfect as I like so I'm willing to give them away and to ship them to the winners of my contests. So here are the three goofy questions. You may answer all three. The first who has the correct answer to each one wins one necklace for that question. We were in Las Vegas for 8 days. Question 1. We ate at one buffet each day. How many different buffets did we eat at? Question 2. I have to avoid fat in my diet since finding out I'm "high risk" for a heart attack . So how many ounces did I lose or gain from the time we left home until the morning after we returned. Question 3. Between 1 and 20, what did I choose as my favorite number as a grade school kid? There it is. Post in order your three guesses by 10 am tomorrow (Saturday the 30th) and I'll announce the winners by Saturday evening. Good luck. ================================================================ Now back to work. Before the cold weather began Dan and I just started pouring molds. No mater what I pour I can convert it into something else. Clay is such fun. We emptied the molds and turned them upside down to continue draining. Opened up and removed. After several hours I have these ready for whatever comes my way on the Wish List. Keep from drying in Hefty bags I store them on a shelf. The molds were put out to dry with a fan blowing on them to speed it up. That's it for today. Tiki Hula is on his way here to help me with my computer. Cheers, Wendy |

Wow, love the bowl, especially the mini Moais. Look forward to seeing the Bobs come forward as their new selves- though you might want to back the car up a bit- Dan doesn't have much wiggle room behind him as he works with those molds! :) Now to win a Bob:

hang10tiki I'm so glad. I like putting on contests too. ebtiki I've got two of them boxed and ready to ship tomorrow. Tiki Hula will come and pick his up. Happy wife, happy husband. TikiHula I would call them the pretty bits. You sure made me laugh. Thank you for fixing my computer. Now I just need to hear from LoriLovesTiki. ==================================================================== Catch up: Thanksgivukkah at Dr. Tiki Mojo and Eva's home which is tiki divine. Thank you dear friends for including us in your party. You are wonderful hosts. ============================================================================ Today we went to the Dickens fair in old Elk Grove. This is within walking distance of our home. The town started here in the 1800's. They shut down the main street for this event. Dr. Tiki Mojo and his wife Eva road bicycles to the event and then came over for a quick visit. ==================================================================== Back to work tomorrow.
