Aww we should have sang happy birthday to you on Sunday! Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Wendy . . . happy birthday to you!

Have a wonderful day! See ya soon! Hugs :)

Cheers!!

Feliz cumpleaños

Wow I wish it were my birthday every day so I could hear from so many friends. Thank you each and every one for making my day special. I've read your wishes several times and I treasure having them here and on Ohana.

I had a lovely day but in the end I couldn't resist getting back to the clay. So I worked on WaikikianMoeKele's small Bob statue. It slowly dawned on me that I was doing the hotel whose name she has here at Tiki Central, The Waikikian.

So on the back of Bob I did the hotel. On the front she wanted some carving and a hand holding a small bob just like LoriLovesTiki's big Bob mug.

Here are the steps I took:

Kele sent me photos of drawings and a previous carving of the hotel.

I cut up a picture and used it to trace the outline of the whole building then cut the picture up some more to do the roof.

Too many ki's. I messed up. This is a dry Bob

so I dunked him in water then added clay to cover the wrong letter and to add the correct one. I then kept dunking so that the new clay would stay on.

Then I did all the fine carving to finish the hotel and plants.

Next I added the hand and tiny Bob.

That's not a chip by the eye just some clay I removed later.

Since Bob was so dried out I dunked him in a water bath one last time and wrapped him in plastic. This will help the hand to dry out and not fall off. Once it is dry I will carve fingernails and the Bob face.

We leave in the morning for visits with family and friends on the way to Oasis. Please come up at any time to introduce yourselves to us. I hope to be overwhelmed with hugs and to know you better.

I'll be watching and posting notes from the hotels along the way so please keep writing when you can. Thanks again for all the wonderful birthday wishes, Wendy

No Problem Wendy! you will get our bill in the mail.

Where's my Dan and Wendy fix?

I'm starting to look a little diaphoretic, my pulse is up, and I have a tremor....

Hang tight Hang10! I'm sure she'll check in. She in transit to Oasis remember. It'll be ok. We'll get through this.

OMG I love you guys. We just checked in after 14 hours on the road. It took that long because we stopped at every antique store along the way seaching for tikis. California has been cleaned out and not by us!

I'm already wishing I had some clay to play with. You all keep me going. Many hugs, Wendy

Z

Can't wait to see you and mister Dan at the Oasis! Agents Dan & Wendy - YAY!

Wendy,

I got back from my cruise yesterday and am just now catching up on the Wendy & Dan show. Excellent work as always and I am beyond thrilled that someone else is getting a hand holding a little Bob like my mug!!!!

I just wanted to wish you a belated Happy Birthday! I can see you were overwhelmed with loving birthday messages and that makes me happy. Glad you had a wonderful day.

Have a great time at Oasis - I am there with you all in spirit! :)

Hi ZeroTiki I'm counting the days.
Hi LoriLovesTiki a cruise sounds wonderful. Thank you for the birthday wishes.

We have arrived at the Crowne Plaza Resort for the best party ever. The computers will become less available as Oasis nears. I'll miss posting but it might be too difficult to find one available.

I hope to see many of you soon.

Cheers, Wendy and Dan

Hi Friends, we went to the Bali Hai today for lunch and it was beautiful and so very tiki. We love this place. On Thursday night it will be a crazy party place. We are looking forward to seeing some of you there and back at the hotel. Cheers, Wendy

Wendy,
It would be great to go to the Bali Hai. Enjoy for me too!

Lori,
I just loved your idea of a little Bob mug in the Bob's hand when I saw yours. Knew that I wanted that in mine too! But I never would have even thought that was possible if you hadn't asked for it first. Thank you!

What's next the Bob in a Bob in a Bob in a Bob like the Russian dolls??? You all keep me busy with creative ideas of your own.

We have begun to see friends here. AquaticSafurnaught(spell?), Otto, Martin, Buzzy on and on a real hug fest.

We will be with friends tonight at the Bali Hai, what a treat.

I do miss the clay, cheers, Wendy

I know what you mean Wendy...wish I still lived in San Diego...I would be hanging out at the Bali Hai and the Hanlei...so wonderfully tropical.

Enjoy your party/friendship/Tiki time!

Wendy and "Book 'em, Danno"

It was great to see you guys, all weekend long...

Kele,

You're very welcome for the idea. It was really just the symbol of my tiki name. I wanted to show a Bob loving tiki but then it turned into a Bob holding a little Bob.

Wendy, maybe my next one should be a Bob holding a tiki or a Tiki mug holding a little tiki!

Enjoy your mini guy Kele!

Hi Friends, we just got home after 10 1/2 hours on the road. Oasis was so much fun. I almost got all the hugs on my list. I'll post some photos here as soon as we have rested overnight. Dan's already out mowing the lawn while I unpack and type.

Swizzle (from AU) will be with us next Monday. We'll have fun taking him through our tiki collection and ceramic workshop.

Thank you all for keeping my thread alive while we were away. It's back to work tomorrow.

Cheers, Wendy

Thanks for the hug, Wendy!

Wendy & Dan are back! YAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

It's such a kick that they used part of my painting.

Once again here's Otto with the whole painting I did for Tiki Oasis 12.

Close up.

Thanks so much for the welcome back ATP, Kele and hang10(love the photo of my small puffer). More tomorrow, Wendy

is it wrong that I'm eating breakfast in front of my computer and hitting refresh every 30 seconds?

Hi dartharnie, I just found 500 emails and oh my we haven't picked up the slow mail yet. I did just pour and start a bowl. Your wolf man is dry! Lots to do including photos from Oasis soon. Stop the refresh, I'm not yet refreshed just showered! Hugs, Wendy

Here we go...

The MadDogMike Show

He was caught in the Dan and Wendy room and forced

to play the part of a pilot for VampiressRN's shindig, girls swooned

then in his next play he caught our friends on the balcony for some music

which turned him into a 7 foot tall giant

but before long he was back to making his ceramic art that we all love along with him.

The end for now. Check out his thread for more photos and details.

For the Dan and Wendy show we started at the Bali Hai

where we met up with MadDogMike, Joanne, Babalu and his wife Amy

once back at Oasis we admired Notches new bar the old one was the KU Bar and this one is the AKU Bar

then it was on to the art show and I got my little lost tiki hug

then we artists who were present got to pose together, that's big toe on the left and Norm Daniels on the right

then Dan said, "hey what about me?" and got the best photo of all time

but not to be outdone by Dan I grabbed Crazy Al for a photo

and then Buzzy for a new shot for the Buzzy Bedroom

to end the event I got my hug from bigbrotiki Sven and

that ends the story of a fun filled weekend at Tiki Oasis 12 ya all come back for more ya hear???????? Wendy

Ha! Great pics Wendy! Thanks for posting!

I enjoy your photos so much! Thanks for posting.

At least if I'm unable to attend the fabulous tiki parties, I can live vicariously through Wendy & Dan pics!
~kele

Thanks for sharing these... although I must say I'm jealous.

I was east coast bound during Oasis and got to enjoy 150% humidity, tornadoes and wine drinkers (yuck). Luckily a twenty dollar tip during the open bar of my brother's wedding did convince the bartender to let me mix a few PALE imitations of tiki drinks with the small variety he had on hand. Never knew there is a kiwi vodka...goes great with mango juice and grenadine...

Wonderful photos. Looks like a blast and it looks like you shared lots of love and laughs!

:D

What? No clay updates???

Just teasing. thanks for sharing the pics from Oasis. Maybe one day I'll make it out there to party with y'all. At least I can live through all the pictures posted by everyone.

Ok, enough reading...back to the clay.

Thank you so much for all the visits and posts. I love to read and you all made my day. I've just been pouring crawl mugs since we got back.

Progress Report:

While we were away a group of Sacramento Crawl mugs were drying.

When doing these mugs I had a bright idea. Instead of leaving them upside down over night to drain I would pour out the slip and then set them right side up. That way a bit more slip would be running down the sides making the bottoms thicker.

Not a good idea. As the extra slip dried it cracked.

I'm lucky that I had a tool I could use to scrape off the cracked slip and make the bottom fine again. It just took some time.

When at Oasis we did a side trip to a ceramics store and I found some new glazes. So I've made another set of glaze tests.

In the morning I'll start on the Wish List. I haven't counted but I think there are more than 30 items to make. I'll be busy so I'll be posting many Progress Reports along the way.

I appreciate your friendship and support. Cheers, Wendy

Let the show begin........

:)

Hi hang10tiki we are finally in show mode.

Along with the start on the Wish List 3 we continue to work on the Sacramento Crawl mug. Orders are taken under California Events with VampiressRN as the author.

Each day we are able to pour 2 mugs.

I clean off the mold lines and cut off the excess in the garage.

Then I move the work to the family room where there is a TV.

I fine tune the sculpture, add my name and Sac Ohana Crawl to the bottom and carve all the lines around the mug.

I have 16 of the run drying and two in molds ready to open today.

Wish List 3

I am assembling bowls one by one. But today we will be making molds.

I mark the tikis and bowl and carve off a small area on the backside of each tiki.

I carve and sand each bowl to make them smoother. These tikis are by Joniece Frank of Frankoma pottery I have that acknowledged on the bottom.

Today we will do our best to make 2 or 3 molds. The most important will be a partial mold of a large plain bowl we got from Tiki Lee in Las Vegas. He has a great shop there and we have found many wonderful tikis in it. I'll have photos tomorrow. We need a larger bowl for a project that will have a volcano. Here are some of the photos and drawings sent by Richard T. I need his TC name.

The other molds that we are planing to do are of some of my sea life sculpts for Roge's sea life chunk lamps. These are small and I want to use them on mugs and bowls.

To be able to pull the creatures out of the plaster I had Dan add screws. This will make molding a challenge but in the end I'll have something to take hold of.

Now I'm off to the garage with Dan to make this happen! Cheers, Wendy

[ Edited by: danlovestikis 2012-08-24 07:15 ]

Yesterday started as a day to make molds. Philot has ordered a special Mayan Volcano bowl and We needed to make a mold for a larger size bowl.

We measured the bottom piece of wood that we would need for the mold and Dan cut it.

I'm using a bowl we got from Tiki Lee's shop in Las Vegas.

I only need the bottom half of this bowl so I built up clay to hide the rest.

Once in the box I smoothed the clay and covered the bowl with mold soap.

After casting the piece we took apart the mold.

I use a kitchen tool to cut the clay off. I store this clay and reuse it each time I make a mold.

Now this mold will be in the sun until it dries. Maybe a couple of weeks. Philot I hope this will work for your bowl.

The next mold we made was of some of the sea creatures I've sculpted for Roge's chunk lamps. Dan had already placed the screws in the back. I checked to see how thick to make the clay.

I made a sheet of clay on a board and then pressed the creatures into place. Next I covered them with mold soap.

I put the box sides in place and used clay snakes to prevent leaks where they join.

I had also filled in places that I thought would not mold well. I'll hand carve these areas after casting. So under the seahorse chin and between two puffer fins I placed clay to prevent the plaster from going there.

After casting we removed the box and clay.

Using pliers and torque we levered out the creatures.

Dan carried out the mold to the sun and brushed off plaster chips.

So here are all our current molds sunbathing.

Thanks for checking in, it was a pleasure having you stop by, Wendy
