This week's finds...

Not much this week, passed up the usual suspects and only purchased items I didn't have already.

Don The Beachcomber ashtray-Sahara Hotel Las Vegas Nevada.

Have not seen many of these and this has eluded me until today, Westwood tiki spice jars with the rack.

Unknown orgin of this metal tiki mask. 22" tall x 14" wide, extremely heavy. Purchased from a seller who in turn bought it from a collector who had it in storage for the past 35 years and the original owner claimed to have purchased this from a closed tiki bar in the Bay Area. Does anyone recogize this?

Later,

PTD

Sorry no scanner...
From September 30 1960 thru October 3 1960 I have these Matson Lines cruise newspapers "The Polynesian" and a letter from the Captain to his passengers.

The 4 newspapers were left on the doorsteps of each cabin ( I believe) and have info on the ship, things to know when traveling, info on the arrival and dos and donts

Then there is also an arrival paper that lays out the events for the day of their arrival to Honolulu.

1 letter from the Captain thanks the passengers for choosing Matson Lines and explains all about their voyage home and the food and parties that will go on.

The papers open once and are appx 12" by 9"

Pretty freakin' cool !

Great week for me tiki collecting in Atlanta. Nice mug swap with a fellow TCer for this guy,Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/7678/4c6026d7.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=4b0db8fa5a2eb1f66904abd2c1dd0e11. Super pleasant lunch talking tiki.

AND a 6 piece set of 3 strand pretzel rattan furniture in fair to very good condition for a paltry $150, pre-sanded and almost ready for staining.

Moving the furniture in is another kick in the arse needed to go from "cinder block room full of tiki collections and a bar" to "built out bar" which will be fun too.
Now I just need to re cover the cushions and stain the furniture to match the bar.

Here is my humble haul for the last week, nice big and heavy fertility tiki, a png fishing tool and axe, a set of 6 fiji place mats , a Hawaii mug , Hawaiian club badge #2 and my best score was the Kon Tiki brochure thingy for the opening of the real kon tiki exhibition / museum in oslo Norway. So i am still super stoked, also picked up 2 x vintage 12 inch glass floats for the pergola and will probably go back tommorrow to get a 3rd..

These are the mugs I've found so far this summer. I've only been collecting a short time, so I'm very happy with these, although I know none of them are particularly rare or special. I found them all at one particular thrift store in the area and they were all $2, except the salt shaker and the Malibu Moai, which were $0.59 each. I couldn't find the matching pepper shaker, so I just brought home the salt shaker. Any idea what it is? It looks like a monkey to me?! Also found the beautiful 2 tier table for $15 yesterday. Any idea what it is either, or who made it? Or how I can find another or 2? Mahalo! -Jones

All of my tiki finds:

I haven't really found much of anything the past few months. I think Buzzy finds everything in SD County. BUT.... I did find these few things last week. A Pub Tiki Mug, a tiki candle, a seahorse mug and an Aku Aku platter!

That only happens when the thread is at the end of the current page and is ready to kick over to the next page. You just have to click the previous page number on the menu and you get right back to the active page.

I might find everything, but I only buy the cheap stuff...

This week's cheap stuff:

Maori Hei-tiki key hook hanger:

I have a bolo tie to match it. Now all I need is the letter opener version and I'll have the complete set.

October 84 National Geographic with a couple articles on the maori:

I looked through the entire run of late 70's and 80's looking for this issue, and it was the second to last one I sorted through.

I also stumbled upon the King K issue from Nov 83.

And finally, the most interesting piece I found this week:

A QSL card from a shortwave guy on Easter Island:

This was in stack of thousands from all over the world that a ham radio guy collected over his lifetime of radio contacts. I was quickly thumbing through them when this one popped up about 4 into the first stack I searched. These cards were exchanged when two ham radio guys would make a contact. the card would denote the time and other details about the contact. After making the contact, the two radio operators would exchange personal cards through the mail as a sort of log/diary of contacts. I quick internet search found a few with tikis on them, like this one:

Here's a few things I found today at the local flea market
A plastic resin shrunken monkey head, a clay pottery Aztec looking "tiki", a Hawaiian souveneer tiki by "Hip Originals" and a green glass tiki.

I also found this combo book and album for $1, that apparently was meant to document ones Hawaiian vacation. it has lots of cool pics . Does anyone know anything about it? Here is the cover and a couple of the inside pages.

Then this evening I get a call from a friend. He collects Automobilia, (I do too , but thats a different forum). he attended an auction at an out of business car dealer and bought a few boxes of auto literature and inside was these items, a foreign album from Tahiti and an 18inch souveneer surf board from a 1979 Datsun convention

I found 7 yellow "Hing Wah Imports" mugs at a garage sale. Looks like I've got some fillers for future mug swaps! Also, a nice, little wooden moai with great details; Orchids R-79; Harvey's painted mug (in pretty good shape!); and this primitive pop-looking decanter. I'm sure I've seen this on here somewhere but couldn't find it. There are no markings on it and the cork has broken and fallen inside. I'm just curious so if anyone has info, let me know...
