Tiki Finds

My last find for March: Coco Joe's ashtray (I assume):

I couldn't get a clear picture of it, but it says "Coco Joe" in the crater at the centre of the edge at bottom of photo, but no sticker on bottom of ashtray. $3.99 at the place we affectionately call Village des Valeurs.

Ah! Pipeholders. Thank you, Sweet Daddy T. I was trying to figure out what those were for, since there's no grooves for cigarettes. It was a lucky buy. I thought it might be Coco Joe's, but I didn't actually see that little inscription until I got home. Looking forward to seeing what you find next!

Ooooh, nice one, not too common, I just gave Gecko the catalog that had that in it. Pele in her lava bath, holding the cork ball on which to knock the ashes out of your pipe. Beautiful!

These are all recent thrift store finds. I picked up the monkey pod Ku mugs yesterday for $2.99 a piece. Even though I find monkey pod bowls all over the place, I haven't seen these before. The greenish glazed one is a contemporary Shonfeld's, which I think are available in department stores. I like it though. Possibly a modern classic in the making? The little Harvey's bucket speaks for itself, I guess. The fact that tiki pieces are somewhat rare on the ground here makes each find more fun.

Nice score, especially on the Trader Vic's Tiki Party book! I can never find books like that. Which Goodwill were you at? I found a few things in Calgary this week which I'll post today or tomorrow.

Brando, that's a new book that you can get cheap via Amazon. And some of its recipes are of questionable authenticity, compared to Beachbum Berry's tomes.

That "Toothy Tiki" label is hilarious! I guess they really liked the joke, why else would they use it when that Tiki has no teeth at all, and it's clearly his tongue that is holding the butt.

OR: They had to sanitize the joke, from "tongue" to "teeth" use, similar to the Dennis The Menace joke on page 42 of the BOT, which must have been diffused from "Coconuts" to "Palm trees":

My theory on that one is: Left over old tag from the original design on a newer redesigned piece. Here's a comparision of the tongue and teeth versions:

They probably had a stack of tags left from the original teethed piece that they used on the newer tongued version when it came out.

The official CCJ's catalog describes the tongue guy as follows:
"238 Tongue Tied Tiki Ash Tray. He sees all,says nothing, and 'like a good ash tray should,' he's hot on the job attending to those "his and hers' cigarettes."

It's only a theory...

I saw that same Coco Joe Kamehameha at the Goodwill where I got all the other stuff but I didn't buy it because it was in poor shape (cracking).

According to TikiQuest the Ku is Orchids. I have quite a few of that one - it's one of the more common mugs that shows up in thrift stores here, not sure why.

You have my blessing to thrift shop in Calgary all you want.

I saw the same Kamehameha in lava along with a Coco Joe hula girl at the West End Goodwill but passed on those due to poor condition, too. It's hard to imagine where any of this stuff is coming from, but I seem to find decent Tiki stuff on a regular basis. I also travel around the province for work, so I try to check out thrift/antique stores where ever I can. But I have a question (sorry if this should be on a new thread): when I find unmarked mugs like the Parasol Girl above or the R-5 lookalike below on the left...

...where are these from? Are they homemade, or from a generic importer? In other words, what if I can't find them on Ooga-Mooga?

That's the ones I saw - that's the Goodwill I got that stuff from.

Hawaii and California mostly. The 60s and 70s were a golden age of cheap charter flights and package vacations (remember Wardair? maybe you're too young). Most everyone I knew vacationed in Hawaii, California or Mexico every winter when I was growing up (except for my family, dammit).

The latter, most likely. I have the same R-5 lookalike - it has a paper barcode sticker on the bottom that says "Green Tiki" and a foil "Made in China" sticker.

Thanks. Much appreciated. I guess I could have made my post clearer. I knew Brando didn't buy the crappy cracked kamehameha because he bought his in Calgary and the one I saw was in Edmonton (and it was lava, not hapawood, but I forgot about that). And I didn't mean to sound like I was denigrating B's Orchids Ku - it was offered as an observation with no value judgement. They are (relatively) plentiful around here - I'd say I see them more than any other style of tiki mug. I don't mean they're not desirable - I like them a lot and I'll pick them up if they're not too expensive.

Here's probably one of the most unique items I have gotten lately:

I managed to get this Leilani Lanes Bowling bag from Seattle, Wa. back in December. I was at the Lucky Red Art gallery in Vancouver dropping off a few pieces we had done for the annual Tiki Lounge Show and on my way out the door my eye caught this on the floor. At first, I thought it was an art piece someone had made but when I grabbed it, I saw that it was original! It's in mint shape.

I was selling a rattan shelf unit to the curator of the show for around $20.00 but ended up trading him for the bag instead. He said he got it from a lady who was having a garage sale a few weeks earlier. I was stoked!

Picked this up at a thrift store. The only thing that speaks "luau" is the word "Luau." Pretty incongruous grouping of words & imagery, but great piece of breweriana.

The Goodwill I bought this at is near Saint Bernard in Ohio (Cincinnati area) so I assume this came from around here. Cincinnati is very strongly Germanic as well.

Found a nice fish trap lamp at a flea market in Hollywood yesterday. I can't wait to wire it up!

I've had some luck, too. I was going to wait till the end of the month, but I'm not that patient. Here are my finds for the last 3 or so weeks. (sorry - this is pretty image-heavy!)
Al Harrington hiball glass, from the Polynesian Palace somewhere in Hawaii, with four little Ku figures on the other side of the glass. Picked up from the Salvation Army on 111 Ave.

Geisha Mug:

Marked Suehiro at the Airport Inn (Sweet Daddy T: you've found a few things from this place, right?). This was from Value Village on 163 St, I think.

Coco Joe plaque: The God Lono. Scored at the V & V on 34 Ave.

Kon Tiki S&P, marked "Design by S. Crane" on bottom. Tracked down at the Old Strathcona Antique Mall.

Set of 5 paddle-shaped swizzles from our very own Beachcomber restaurant. Finally, some hard evidence that Tiki did exist in Edmonton! (wish I could see those photos from the thread on Locating Tiki) Also from the Old Strath Antique Mall.

I couldn't get a clearer picture than this because I don't actually know how to use my camera.

I also found a bevy of autographed Polynesian records, the most notable of which is probably the Al Harrington "I Love this Land" album. Found at the Goodwill on 51 Ave (where I spied Sweet Daddy Tiki but hid my identity in the shadows of the record shelf...) and the V & V on 34 Ave.

Looks like you cleaned out the Strathcona antique mall of everything tiki they had (except for a nice carved Maori tiki - did you see it? It was about 16 bucks). As per your wish, I've restored the photos to the Beachcomber thread in Locating Tiki.

As for closeup pictures, look for your camera's macro setting . On some digital cameras it's marked with a tulip icon. It lets you get right up close and stay in focus.

I only won because I'm slightly obsessive. I saw that Maori tiki - I liked it, but had to pass because I had my heart set on something ceramic. They also had an old edition of Kon Tiki, fairly well-worn, for $4 which I also passed on. If I see them there next time, I'll probably pick them up. And thank you again for restoring those photos! As for the macro setting, I was using it, but I can't remember how to manually focus. I'll figure it out some day. I like the mug you found - mugs are my favourite thing to collect. I don't have any duplicates yet, but when I do I'll be hitting you up for trades!
