Nice finds everyone! Dewey you still have me beat for finding great mugs in the bay area. All I found this weekend were three albums: "Paradise Moods" and "Music from the movie Hawaii" by Martin Denny, and"Music of Hawaii" by Henry Mancini.

Thanks Dusty, Big Kahuna and OGR. I had to make a trek to the shores of exotic Lake Michigan for this weeks finds. Schirman pieces are hard to find but I picked up three in as many weeks.

Been on a downslide this past week...went out again today though and found a couple of items...

I have not seen this matchbook; from Moultray's Polynesian Restaurant, The New York World's Fair.

Tiki Farm mug 2001 by Drew.

Not a bad day when you find a Tiki Bob mug on a table for a $1.00. Slightly different "brown" from my other more "orange" Bob, and the font on the back is a little different too.

A Bob for $1 Duane....not bad at all!

I found this stuff today. The most interesting thing is the old post card that I put in a frame that I had. I am making it somewhat a shrine. The post card says- SERRA PALM. THE FIRST PALM TREE IN CALIFORNIA. PLANTED 1769 BY THE FRANCISCAN FATHERS. OLD TOWN SAN DIEGO, CALIF.
I thought that was rather neat.

Found these little Beachcomber Budd's bottles.

These are photos of my brothers collection. I've been meaning to post images of it for quite some time. The reason is, I found most of it over the years (accept for the Tiki Farm mugs). My brother collects tiki stuff way more than I do (I usually just collect some mugs and paper items) So over the years, if I found something cool, I would give it to him. His place isn't as decked out as it could be because the landlord isn't favorable to paint or major changes. The pictures include another view of the bar I found him that I mentioned a few posts back.

Finally located the missing camera.

books & Bali the card game, I have a bunch of new postcards & other paper but I ran out of steam.

good mugs

the usual suspects

Um I dunno but it says Chile on the back?

lava

Tahiti slit drum

wooden idols

I am in Orange County,Calif. we are so picked over for cool stuff, so I mostly have to rely on Fleebay for those harder to find collectables
But I was working by the Orange Circle & decided to stop in the antique malls & look around.

I found a few items, nothing vintage but cool none-the-less.

I'm wondering if we can figure out where one of my finds came from. It's a picture holder from a place called "Tropics Club." Here's the cover graphics and one of the 4 pictures of this group that were in it.

The only clues are the phone, which is "Main-10354" and "Upper Valley".

When I saw it in the wild, the phone number reminded me of this matchbook I picked up a while ago from another san Diego place named "Tropic Cocktails?." I thought it was the same place until I got it home and saw the names and numbers were a little different. Here's the matchbook:

Anyone know where the Tropics Club is that the picture holder came from?
thanks in advance

Buzzy,

I'm pretty sure that is from Jack Howard's Tropics Club in Battle Creek, Michigan. I grabbed these images from a matchbook a long time ago and it looks like the same artwork from the photo holder. Need some info from Michigan folks.

This may not be of much help, here is where the original art is from, a 1940's nightclub I am told in Hawaii

I have seen the Artwork reused in many things over the years.

I have seen very few items from the Tropics Club in Battle Creek and I only live twenty minutes away. I don't think this photo is from the Battle Creek area. The "upper valley" is the giveaway. No valley in BC upper or lower. I have a good friend who grew up and lives in the area and he is going to do a little searching around to try and get some more info. I'll do some digging as well and see what we can come up with.

Buzzy -

Looks like the Tropics Club in El Paso, TX. A book search reveals it was a gambling house as well as a club, and made payments to the mob. It was run by Barney Marcus of Brooklyn and Los Angeles underworld kingpin Mickey Cohen & his bodyguard John Stomponado are known to have visitied it. A few vintage newspaper articles don't paint such a nice picture of the place:

El Paso Herald-Post, Jan 17, 1947 (see 3rd paragraph from the bottom)

It had been renamed the Sunland Club by 1950:

Tiki Shaker,

Thanks for those pics of your brother's place, it looks great.

Tikisgrl,

Great haul as usual. Can you post a pic of the Bob Lee mug showing the ears in the back on the Bob Lee thread? I have never seen that mug with the ears before and posted the matching S & P shakers a while back.

Sabu,

Nice research and solving the Tropics Club mystery. Those guys in the photo look mob-sih!

Hope to see more on the Battle Creek location from Uncle Trav.

I've got a couple, too. Mine look like that, but the eyes are just very well-done paint jobs. As far as I know, none of them were actually glass.

Found this today. It's velvet, hut on the water at sunset, looks to be pretty old judging from the back and the frame. It measures about 13 x 22. I may try my hand at repainting the frame, make it more natural than the black and gold thing it's got going on.

Very few finds this week...

Coco Joe's Hapawood and lava ashtray of Hawaii.

Collector's plate from Hawaii.

A few albums I will post over in Tiki Music.

Vintage bamboo shelf.

Another painting by local Sacramento area artist "Cinder".

Here are few finds from the last couple of weeks. First are some garage sale finds.

Here some Tiki wall hangings form American Tiki Designs. They are 18" tall.

I found all of this at a Goodwill. 2 Coco Joe's, a small craving, & a DC Hawaii Mug.

This bunch I got at a thrift store that just happen to be 50% off the day I was there. 2 Joe Vitale Tiki Farm Mugs & a Tiki Farm shot. The purple mug has no markings.

Lastly, I bought these at a collectibles store. A black Moai from The Tiki's, Monterey Park, Ca. & a Harvey's Sneaky Tiki, Lake Tahoe.

J

In a mad rush of adrenaline, Marie and I 'rescued' these two specimens from an estate sale in Downey earlier this week.

Wow, what cool designs -- alas such tragic examples of Tiki decomposition, blinded and crotchless...as if purged by some overzealous missionaries!

HOK

:)

Found this a couple of weeks ago at the Swapmeet...

You guys are all coming up with great finds! I'm such a loser... here's a Treasure Craft bowl... my best of the weekend.

THAT is glorious!!

(feel better?)

I believe Bruce Springsteen said it best.."Whoa-o-oh I'm on fire"

Steve Crane War Club mug. $1.00 :D

BK

Dewey, you really should play the lottery! Holy crap, you're on a roll!

L

Dewey no more complaining about bad tiki hunting!!!

You know what it is! Found it at a local junk/antique place for $20. Did Tiki Farm include some sort of insert or do you just make the famous "snow cone"?

Not old, not pretty, not really tiki.

Nothing was included with that one. BUT,there is a little how-to on tikifarm.com under the "misc tiki items" tab, you just have to find the right materials. I think that the easiest route woud be to find a funnel with the same opening diameter. I can't quite remember what I used when I made my volcano...

The "tiki" in that first shot looks to have been, at the very least, influenced by Tiki Bob. Beggars can't be choosers, right?

Indeed! Very cool, those two mugs, never seen them before! More Tiki than not! Pop primitivism for sure, perhaps even ....Tiki Moderne. :)
Any markings? White glaze inside?

Nah... it's one mug, no white glaze inside and the bottom has printed on it "Story Teller Arts, Designed by Rachel & Richard Ellzondo, Made in China". Seems to be some shop in Phoenix.

Hmmm...though the style seems vintage, the stamp on the bottom looks more recent, and the name sounds new-agey.
I could swear I saw that design on the right somewhere, can't think of it right now.

They use to sell this set of mugs on Overstock.com about 3 years ago. I was going to buy a set for my brother but I thought they were to pricey for what they are. I wish I could remember the exact price but I'm assuming it was around 20 bucks for the pair. I remember thinking it was too steep for something that was borderline tiki.

Aloha!
I'm not a frequent TC-poster...but I just scored this glass on eBay...and now I'm worried that its a fake. I've never seen a "frosted" version of this. Can anyone help out?

Thanks!

I found these two items at a thrift shop today. A set of salt and pepper shakers and an Easter Island vase. The vase weighs 3-4 lbs and feels like it is made of a heavy metal. I did a search through the forums looking for the Easter island vase and could not find info. Anyone know what it is?
