I may just put a five gallon bucket on top

or place a five gallon container of rum and juices up there, and provide some really long straws, and have a really cool (and BIG) tiki mug.

or you could tap into some of the ingenuity and cleverness of the Drifters hot rod people, and place some wheels and a engine on the thing, and create yourself a Moai-mobile!

I'm glad to see that key item of Kahiki identity end up with a Tiki Central member, and that it will stay in Columbus.

It looks old and it is some type of palm. It is about 4 feet tall. The varnish is warn away more on the head than the body. Does it look familiar to anybody? Do you think I should recoat it?

Ok here It is. I got a PM From Hula Cat here on TC. They said they were writing a book on the Kahiki. They saw my thread on TC about the Kahiki and thought I could help them out. So I told them yes and invited them to my home. I was so glad they were not some crazy A holes I could not wait to get rid of. Gerg and Melissa are great people!

Anyway I told them how to get in touch with the people I knew from the Kahiki.
They got me in on some talks with some I never met. Lee Henry was one.
Some of the people they interviewed were the Tsao family. In the interview Alice Tsao, the last owners wife, asked them if they wanted the Fireplace and the Moais.
They said yes. The only catch was they had to move them in three days. they asked me if I wanted one.
Well a, yes I do! Luckily my friend has a crane so I was able to
get it in time.

I need to say that had Melissa not taken this offer the three Kahiki items would have been cracked up and thrown away. She saved them!

Here are a few tiki or Hawaiian items found recently in antique malls and junk stores.

Found these in the Kansas City area.

I'm interested to find out more about the green mug that says "Fishermans Wharf Honolulu". I have two of these, green and blue. The blue mug seems more finished, but they both appear homemade. Any Ideas?

These tiki finds came from a Trip to Las Vegas.

Mrs. Lucy Diamond scored this ceramic tiki statue in an antique store, I believe this may be our only example of homemade tiki. Its signed on the bottom "Austin 1962". Anyone seen something similar? Was this a school art project?

Here are a few items I picked up in the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area last week. Kind of slim pickin's since my last visit. I bought the Tiki Farm Sufferin' Bastard mug at Solomon's Island Tiki Bar.

Well this guy was found on Craigslist in NY area. Picked up today VERY sturdy piece needs the bar top sealed and planning on clear coating. The backside has 2 shelves and cabinet that is lockable on the bottom - I don't have the key. It was used outside mostly but will soon live inside. I was told it was bought in Atlantic City area NJ at an Antique store for 1000 - with the 4 stools. The stools have been refabriced with the print you see. Anyone know anything about the this style bar? I also need to get some of the Threadlike Bamboo to touch up the stools - Know where to get that?

PS I did not pay 1000 for it.

The koalaman gets lucky once in a while. I've wanted these, especailly the art one, for quite some time. Wasn't until today I found them in the right spot to steal. Timing is everything for the charming koala. It was a simple distraction and dash play, "Hey look, is that Sandy Duncan!?!"...snag, run like hell.

It's not stealing if you want them more than the current "owner". I learned that in law school, both semesters.

COVARRUBIAS , MIGUEL. Pageant of the Pacific.
San Francisco, Pacific House, 1943. Only edition, 2 vols., small folio and large portfolio, the first pp. 22 with 2 maps in the text, bound in green cloth lettered in gilt on upper cover, and descriptive of the second, with 6 color lithograph maps (4 measuring approx. 25" x 38" overall, and 2 measuring approx. 19" x 25" overall), the portfolio in brown tapa-style decorative paper-covered boards lettered "Covarrubias" in blue on the upper cover, and held in place by a 1/2" dowel, the whole tied with hemp. Yes, Sven used two of the images in "BOT", if I am correct. The "art" image is the inside cover and "dwellings" is seen inside, first third of the book, not sure on page. The ones I just stole are marked on the back "Galeria Sudamericana NYC", I believe Pacific House produced the copies.

Yeah, once in a while I gets lucky, and no need to visit the doctor this time. I've always like the images and the artist, there's a connection to "tiki" and also to San Francisco. If only a club sandwich were somehow involved, nirvana.

Perhaps the other collectors stayed away after they saw koalacharms had left his mark. Don't fear the reaper, be afraid of the koala!

I found these two ceramic murex shell bowls at the Marshall's down the street today. They're pretty big (~10 inches long). I thought they would make nice communal drink bowls. They reminded me of the conch shell bowls that I've seen in the display cabinet at Trader Vic's.

I couldn't work out how to access the source image they used for that zoom application, so I took about 50 screencaps and then painstakingly pieced them all together. I'm sure I could have been doing something better with my time, but I've now got a 4.5mb jpg or 17.8m mb tif @ 3037 x 2047 pixels if anyone else wants it! (only the art one, couldn't be bothered with the others...)

I just got this awesome wall plate and was wondering if anyone has seen it before or knows anything about it. It seems to have a bit of age. It's 14 inches across and made of a melamine type plastic, and has a canvas strip with an eyelet glued on the back.

I have two of these plates in two different sizes. I also have a matching set of stacking bowls. I'm pretty sure mine all have a sticker with the manufacturers name on it. I'll check when I get home.

I have that tray as well. Mine had a Paul Marshall (PMP) sticker on the bottom when I got it.

I found this framed picture today that is screened on some kind of textured material. I don't have a clue of its origins but the hands look like they were inspired by those giant tiki forks.

^^^ quick edit - naugatiki, that's a Maori design and the three fingered hands are typical, occasionally you will see an additional thumb too. That's a pretty cool tekoteko figure with nice kowhaiwhai patterns in the background. Looks like a vintage tourist piece, hard to say as I haven't seen one like it before.

Tiki-Kate, pretty much all my tiki stuff (including this) is purchased online - finds in the wild are exceptionally rare treats in NZ (apart from Maori themed stuff) but do occur very occasionally. I am also gifted pieces from time to time by generous souls who are sympathetic to my plight!

Unfortunately it has gone exactly the same way as vintage Poly-pop in the US - there is huge interest in kiwiana/Maoriana these days and finds in the wild are rapidly diminishing. 10 years ago you couldn't give the stuff away. The shrewd collector can still make the occasional good find with a little skill and luck. :wink:

Here you go Paipo. The big plate is 14" and the small one is 10". All of the items have a foil tag that reads "High Impact Plastic Hand Painted Designs by International Mercantile Corp. Japan"

I love the bowls, and the whole set looks really good together. Thanks for posting the pic. These pieces must be a few decades old I'm guessing? My plate now has pride of place on the dining room wall :)

how funny I just found the same stein about a week ago at a thrift store. for 25 cents I had to add it to the collection.

I found this bar guide from 1943 titled Hawaiian Hospitality shaped like a pineapple and although tikiless it's chock full of fun recipies like Champagned Mangoes, Prince Kuhio Punch,and the Kiha-Huna Cocktail where "Two every night and nothing will go wrong with you- three every night and you don't give a damn if it does!" I know what I'm doing this long weekend.

Ok not a great "tiki hunt" this week end but I did score a couple of mugs. A Daga " Molokai Mule mug. I do not know anything about it other than it has a Mule(inside a horse shoe) wearing a Lie marked w/ the Shearton Hotel "S" on the back. 50 cents. A Harvey's Lake Tahoe Hula Girl mug. this one has a OMC sticker on bottom. 75 cents. But here was the real find on the way home I found a complete Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman w/ HMI tags(not the ply craft knock off) The chair was sitting out with someone's trash. The shock mounts need to be re-glued but other than that it complete in great shape. I stopped and asked the home owner if he was " just tossing" the chair away. He said yes his wife did not like it and when it broke she made him toss it out. The mrs. came out and said " haul that ugly thing away, we are going to Sears to get a new rocker". Sorry the pics are so bad
