Tiki Finds

I'm not up on the Savage/MacIntosh artwork, but I found this TINY ladies shirt last weekend for .99 cents & couldn't pass it up!
I just sent Humuhumu a pm to see if she wants it, since she is possibly the tiniest whip of a girl on this board, besides the lovely wee Frenchy.
Any info on this shirt....anyone??

I somewhere remember a hunch that the one on the back of Exotica III stood in some kind of "Fern dell" park...some garden or park with Fern in the name that was a tourist attraction on Oahu.

Johntiki, no idea as to the whereabouts of the Matson cruise ships. Maybe they retrofitted them into container ships. More likely though they ended up in some 3rd world country.
When I took the old ARANUI on my trip to the Marquesas, I found out it was build and first put in service in Bremerhafen, near my hometown of Hamburg, in the 50s. And in Papeete Harbour that year they had moored two humongeous city-block size cruise ships of a line that had gone bankrupt after the 9/11 travel paranoia. The fuel alone for these suckers must have cost a fortune. They just sat there, nobody knew what to do with them.

My sister recently photographed the wreck of a stranded freighter from my grandfather's Kirsten line on the Southern tip of Patagonia. There are websites of ship history fans that report findings of alienated ocean liners in exotic places, like China. Lost their URL though, sorry.

In regards to the Matson Lines, in 1977 I spent the summer in Sitka, Alaska, and the Mariposa was sailing the SE Alaska route. My brother and I stowawayed on a shuttle while the Mariposa was anchored in Sitka, and ran around the ship for a few hours. I was 11 at the time, and can't remember a thing I saw on the ship, other than I was on it. Couldn't tell you where the Mariposa or Lurline are today. Possibly worth some investigation.

It is indeed a Sears brand shirt. In my opinion they made some of the coolest mod Hawaiian shirts in the 60's & 70's. This one is totally 70's.
I offered to gift it away but havent heard back from humhumu. I give stuff away all the time, but ususally in person. Maybe the email I sent seemed spammy or something?

I had that experience at the Goodwill yesterday that I'm sure many of you can relate to...I had done my cursory inspection of the merchandise, was feet from the door, turned around and decided to give the shelves one last glance. Nothing on the coffee mug and glass shelf, nothing amongst the plates and bowls, nothing in the metal aisle, nothing around the plastic cups...then the last shelf with the wooden junk and baskets. I saw it, gasped and reached out for it fearing someone else's grubby hand was gonna snatch it away just as my fingers touched it...

I couldn't believe it! I had actually found something I had been looking for and had even considered shelling out big bucks for on Ebay! He's about 6 inches tall, pretty detailed and cost a whopping $3.00! The day before I left the very same Goodwill with the intention of abandoning my daily searches and now this! "I try to get out, but they keep dragging me back in."

Here's the stuff I picked up last week at some estate sales. Uli Uli, Mask, 50s House Magazines, "leave a note", old fashioned glasses.

Here is the "leave a note", it is a little door that houses a notepad and pencil.

The glasses are cool, cause I had the matching ice bucket

I got this cool Danish modern chair for $5.00 a year or two ago, I just recovered it.

I couldn't believe it! I had actually found something I had been looking for and had even considered shelling out big bucks for on Ebay!

I also found this rattan swag lamp. I'm going to try and cover the plastic cylinder with a tapa like material.

I found one of these as well a couple of months ago at a Salvation Army thrift store, i guess these are somewhat common find. Does anybody have any info about it?

Since I have basically just started collecting, I do not have any "wow" stories. But, over the weekend I managed to find about 10 albums and 1 cd perusing through a few thrift and records stores. I don't think any of them are rare, but I will post pics when I get home.

I thought I had read somewhere that there was an uproar that they were going to start selling mass-carved Phillipino versions therefore making the locally produced product more expensive to tourists who might want to bring a souvenir home.

My Moai is pretty basic but Frogman's is the Moai I really want. Don't get me wrong I love my little guy but I'm still gonna keep my eyes open for the fancier version.

Finally bought the ubiquitous fork and spoon at half price day at Value Village (not worth fighting the crowds and the long wait in line for the small amount I saved)

Two mugs from the Hawaiian Inn, Daytona Beach. At $15 for the pair they were rather expensive for Goodwill, I thought, but I snatched em up because we don't see many mugs from Florida here.

Nice finds Sweet DT! I realized that if I saw a vintage ceramic tiki mug in the wild somewhere, I would most likely pay up to $10 each (regardless of what it was). So $15 for the 2 is still a great deal IMHO. Hell, you got 2 of 'em, I'll give you $10 for one of 'em. It's a design I don't have...

Great finds everyone! I would probably pay up to $10 or $15 for a vintage mug in the wild I don't have, but it depends on the mug. (probably wouldn't pay that for a coconut, unless it said something neat)

I've been away from my regular haunts since last week, but I did have some great tiki 'buys' yesterday.

I visited Funhauser Decor over in Vancouver and brought back a Kava bowl, a set of Mar Tikis, and an Ape Mug, as well as two of Heather Watt's prints.(The Sleeping Volcano & Dinner in Beverly Hills) They need to stock more of her prints, since I would have bought a bunch more. The folks over at Funhouser are great supporters of tiki, and have talked about a possible event or gathering at the Polynesian Room in the Waldorf Hotel! Wouldn't that be cool?!

The polynesian room is my first tiki experience in january 1999. There was party once a month by Blue Lizard production with concerts, DJ...it was fantastic. I love this place

I wish I was into tiki when I lived over there in '98, I would have been to that party every month!

Hello everyone!
Yesterday I had my first 'find' of a mug in the wild. It is an Orchids of Hawaii R-5 mug!
As I have not been collecting for very long, I do not know the rarity or anything, but it was damn exciting to actually find something in a thrift store. I also got a small coconut bowl...both for $2.50! :D

Jawa - the thrill of finding tiki in the wild never get's old - I found 2 Leilani mugs Friday at the Goodwill and was smiling ear to ear! Good luck on further tiki finds!

I found a cute little unmarked fogcutter style mug yesterday. It's got a crazed white glaze with loosly painted palm trees on it.
Has anyone seen one of these before?

Yesterday I found 2 Don the Beachcomber ceramic bamboo style mugs at Value Village for 2 bucks and also a Elvis live from Hawaii VIA SATELITTE double vinyl for 99 cents. Gotta love the King!

roadkutter, I know the ones you're talking about! They're eally tiny, with little round handles on one side. I have 4, ok, 3, one broke.

The one I found is fogcutter style. Fogcutter mugs are tall, curvy and lack a handle, like this one from Trader Vic's:

I was surprised at how good their prices are, thay have certainly got their market cornered in Vancouver.

hey roadkutter, yep I had such a great time! I probably should have called ahead and warned them! I was just thinking about that set, wish I'd had a closer look at it. Blue is my favorite colour :)

It was fun playing 'got it, got it, need it, got it' with their tiki farm shelf. I bought some of the things I've wanted for some time, but knew would be expensive to ship up here. It really is a great shop, they've done a fantastic job decorating and stocking it.(and I LOVE the locally made bars he's selling)

I'll be one of their best customers, when I have the chance to get into town that is. Which is probably good for them, since I'm more likely to spend a wack of dough on a special road trip than if I lived locally.

He should get into serving a free beverage to customers like they did at the Good Eye Gallery in DC. Non-alcoholic drinks in plastic mugs or something. That would be fun!

I picked up a few things in New Zealand recently.

I bought a few carved items

and some books

and even a tiki mug.

I also got two tiki tea towels

and some skirts and bandanas from Swallow NZ

and some other souvenirs.

Tiki Kate! That is some haul!! Maori everywhere! I'm extremely envious, I'd love to visit New Zealand one day!

New Zealand was the most amazing experience of my life.

I'll post some pictures from my travels in the main discussion area.

The shopping was phenomenal. I didn't find much in the wild though. (I hit every thrift store, used book shop, record store and fabric shop in every town I stopped in.)

I highly recommend going if you ever get the chance.

I found one of those decanters for AUS$5.00 in a thrift store here in Sydney. Mine has a beigey/browney coloue scheme with jade eyes though. It may too be cursed, but i think I can live with it for now...

Oh yes, that is a very excellent find. Spurlin Ceramics, made mugs for a lot of the early So Cal spots (Islander, Tahitian, and others). Spurlin was known for some interesting glazes, this glaze one is the same that was used for the other Islander mug I have(check that same menu in BOT). Bob at OA helped identify another mug I have from Spurlin, made by Stella Bodey. They have a few in their case of ultimate rarities.

Congrats, that is one very uncommon Tiki mug.

Ok, as promised , I did go out today and managed to find a few things :D

An Orchids of Hawaii little geisha girl R-96(not really tiki), an Orchids of Hawaii pineapple mug R-15, 2 Tiki Leilani mugs, and 2 unknown handled mugs. The dealer at the antique place said she picked up the two unknown mugs in Michigan. Anyone see these before?
