i built a cradle and strapped them in one at a time.i had 3 friends help me lay them down against the tailgate of my truck.we were able to pick up the bottom and slide it in.my 1 ton truck was sagging pretty well.when i got them home,i backed up to my deck and got a bunch of 2 inch pipes under him and slid him out.i had to use a bottle jack,come along,and pulleys to stand them back up.they are on my deck now and will get moved on to platforms overlooking my driveway in the spring

have one of these mugs too. If you set it side by side with either the speckled white or speckled colored Trader Vic's 1963 Fog Cutter you would swear that all three have to be from the same mold...

they are across from boars head,where hampton beach and north beach meet.here are a few more pictures

Tiki shaker, came with the drum mugs, supposedly from the Tonga Room, I have never seen this before.

I have one of these from "Trader Vic's Toronto" mid 60s

Hawaiian Village Tampa (near and dear to my heart). 99.9% of the paint is intact, OMC sticker on bottom.

A few Tiki finds from around Middle Tennessee and we had dinner at the Omni Hut with some fellow Tikifiles as well.

Here's a few of the cooler "tiki-related" finds I've come across in the last few months. Just got a new camera, so finally got some time to post.

BOT...little chunk out of the cover, but got it for next to nothing. Now when people want to know more about tiki, I've got a loaner book.


Original Don's coconut mug. Ironically enough, I found this within 2 days of the new mug release.

Some old japanese floats.



One of the cooler rattan piece's I've found in a while. Has a nice modern feel to it. I refinished everything but the feet. The only problem is that the shelves are about half an inch short of holding records standing straight up.



This is my favorite recent find. An old sawfish rostrum. It measures about 24" long. I'm not quite sure of the exact species.

I've been looking for the African Sounds lp for a long time.

I've been looking for the In The Raw lp since your post today.

My wife and I spent the last 2 weeks in the Northwest, Oregon and Northern Calif. Finding Hawaiian and Tiki items in that part of the US is difficult. We found a few mugs, Islander, volcano bowl, and Hawaiian cottage, large Japan float, and some stirring sticks from Hawaii. Also a couple of odds and ends. It was a lot of fun.

A few recent finds: Hawaiian Inn paddle-sucking mug, Kon Tiki fogcutter, and (much to my surprise) a Trader Vic'c Seahorse for $8.

About two years ago i bought this wooden Moai figure on a flea market in Basel / Switzerland.

and I recently found this picture of Sophia Loren with the "premio Moai" (or Moai award) on the cover of a magazine from Chile.

My Moai figure looks very similar an has the same size, only the base is missing, but there are remnants of glue where the base was.
Probably a copy of "premio Moai" as a souvenir...?

other than they are both Moais carved from wood, I see virtually nothing that is same between the two.

To my eyes, those two look as different from each other as these mugs do...

To quantify my opinion, I'll provide some observations on the different pieces.
Here's my list of what looks different between the two carvings:

1. The backs of the heads. One carver used a curved line, while the other used two straight lines meeting to form an obtuse angle.
2. The concave on the backs are opposite of each other. One curves inward, the other curves outward
   3.Chest line is parallel to the jaw line on one, they're at an angle on the other.
3. The high ridge line on the face extends to the nose and lips on one, it ends before that on the other one
4. The way the neck forms to the chest on the award one is done totally different from the other. Top one- the shoulder line is horizontal, while the other is askew.
5. Arms-One has the arms at the back of the torso and they are well defined, the other is in the middle of the torso and carved with no detail
6. The cheeks next to the noses are different: One straight and parallel to the nose, the other is curved to the nose.
7. Ear goes to the top of the head on one, the other is below the top of the head.
   9.top of the nose line is parallel to the ear on one, it's at a 45angle on the other
8. The nose curves on one and forms an arc to the forehead, while the other is a continous flat line.

However, they both have glue on them, so based on that fact alone, I'm going to say that both of those pictures are of the EXACT SAME TIKI!

I meant not exactly the same ... only that it is quite similar, or may have the same origin, maybe.
who knows how many of those were ever carved.
a friend of mine has bought one too and that one looks slightly different.

I had what you said right. I was just wondering what Phil was seeing. It looks like I cut his name out when I quoted him. Sorry about that. "Same" is different than "similar" to me. I see them as similar, but not the same. You see them as similar, and not the same, like I did. I put the point by point so eyes untrained to the minute differences in similar carvings could see if they agree/disagree with
what I see/think. It was kind of wordy,so I figured most people woild skip over it anyway and get to the pictures.
I'd get a vintage surf trophy and glue it on to it. then I'd make a fake bronze plaque for it like "1st Place Rapa Nui Pacific Surf World Champinship 1955" for it. That'd be double neat! tiki and surf go together like tropical drinks and tiki mugs.

Been way way to busy lately working 7 12's and finally had a day off to hunt. I have been looking for a war club in the wild for years and found two within a half hour on Saturday. The first is from Fiji made of heavy wood and about 2 1/2" long.

Love this one. Nearly two feet long and hand carved and painted from 1945. Probably a memento from a vet's time in the Pacific.

A nice carved Moai about a little over a foot tall.

And this small carving. Looks to be similar to the kamanggabi figures from New Guinea.

Just to get things back on track, here is some stuff I picked up some time ago but never got around to posting. This is the leftover stock from a souvenir business that closed down in Auckland...6 of the wooden original carved masters and about 70 resins. The company was called "Bird Hill". I have no idea who the carver was, but the work is top shelf.

When I find the folder of the individual carvings, I'll post those too.
