Any one notice the new Tiki Farm mug by Thor Thordarson looks remarkably like the crazy doll from the Trilogy of Terror horror film? Coincidence?

He's been too busy trying to track down Rufus to come up with new and fresh ideas.

Buzzy Out!

You had to remind me of Rufus!!

Popped into an estate sales this morning looking for furniture. Came out with two Kahika moai mugs. This is in Austin, TX mind you. Nothing else tiki or Ohio related in the house. Probably not of interest to many here, but they also had a plethora of Alex Chilton/Big Star/Boxtops records that didn't at all suit the mostly 70s electric blues record collection. Weird sale. Happy me.

The one on the right must be from an earlier mold. Much better detail.

After a very long drought, I finally made a nice score today:

  1. A set of 6 Port Light glasses: I think these are the retail version, as there are no Trader Vic's markings on them. $20 for the set!

  2. A George Pisani two-faced "Tiki" decanter made for Arrow Liquors in 1960. This appears on page 155 of Tiki Quest, but after looking at it more closely, it's clearly a highly stylized representation of a court jester, as it's wearing a belled fool's cap. Oh well, it still looks Tiki Moderne enough for my bar.

  3. The smaller version of the Disneyworld Polynesian Village two-faced mug to keep my larger version company.

I have one ceramic port and one ceramic starboard mug marked Trader Vic’s. Inexplicably, one is quite larger than the other.
I also have that black and white “tiki” decanter which looks great on my barback.
Congrats on your finds, happy hunting!

Interesting. I didn't realize there were ceramic versions. I'm not a big bourbon fan, so I've only had a Port Light at Vic's once, and it came in the glass version.

My barback doesn't have an inch of room left, and my mug shelves aren't tall enough to accommodate it, so I had to put the decanter on a bench where I normally keep my tiki carvings. Unfortunately, the black side kind of disappears in the low-light, so I'll have to come up with some way to illuminate it.

Amazingly awesome or terribly tacky? Can't decide but for ten bucks I couldn't resist picking it up.

Not awesome, not tacky, not tiki. But it is pretty cool and would fit in nice in the right setting.

picked up a pair of these recently - the shrunken head mugs were $2 each.

also managed to grab this pair of universal statuary chalkware wall hangings - each one is 26" tall

They are from the mai kai

BK

A few things form the past month or so.

Lil book
Few good pics and a faded shot glass

This is one of two things I've found lately that came with the internal discussion of...what is it? is it polynesian, african, marquesan? With the final answer being ... I don't give a crap. Its cool, I like it, and it was a $1.

And that's all that matters.

I had to look up what a muddler was... I don't drink, so I'm not up on bar stuff. Now I just gotta figure out who Moki is lol

Couple of Maori pieces I picked up yesterday....

Digging thru matchbooks today I found....

No big deal, a sandwich place in Topeka Kansas.... until you turn it over....

Trader Dicks in Kansas? A private club?.... sounds super cool.

I searched on here for info, found nothing about it.... except this, which shows the same matchbook..

Tell me about it Lori-I have been getting skunked for what seems forever.
CeCe and I hit 4 thrift’s yesterday and I got nuttin and she found a pair of tapa print (really nice)cloth napkins AND a jade HeiTiki attached to a sterling chain. I’ll post pix when I get my camera from the shop. Btw, I also checked out 2 thrifts in the morning and of course nothing!
Cheers

We just had some really good luck at a Picker's sale.

A PNG mask with Cassowary feathers. We had just thought that hunting never worked but now we want to go go go. Wendy

PS Good Job hang10tiki

:)

Those are cute hang10tiki.

I know this thread is for finds from thrift stores and garage sales and the like but since I have never, let me repeat NEVER have found anything to buy at these places I hope you won't mind me sharing what came in the mail last night. Which I promptly christened with a mai tai:

One of the newest offerings from Tiki Farm!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Wendy- :)
Lori- nice mugs, I assume the drinks in your new kitchen were great

Found these today on the way home from work

Headed up NorCal/Reno for TDay. found some stuff up in Virginia City:

a Tahitian ash tray:

a buncha matchbooks:

a swizzle stick from Tonga Lei:

a small version of the Harvey's swizzle stick (regular version shown for scale):

a can of nuts(?) from the Wreck Bar athe The Castaways:

and a Trader Vic's Hot Buttered Rum glass:

hang10tiki you can laugh a whole bunch. I scrolled down to the lid and then searched the house for a magnifying glass to read the lid. After I squinted a whole bunch and got it read I scrolled further and found that you had enlarged it. My new motto scroll first and always.

What a unique find. Wendy

hang10tiki-I have one of those Kontiki card game boxes too. Mine is missing the cards.

If google it, you'll find that the "Lionel Barrymore's outstanding waterfront etchings" on the card backs are pretty generic fishermen's village stuff, and have nothing to do with Kon-Tiki or Tiki.

But I have that box too, and I love the Polynesian Pop poetry of the text in the lid…I tried to quote it in my Beachcomber chapter, but did not have enough space.

And remember! :
"The hand-blown glass float, placed gem-like in the Kontiki lid, is an authentic artfact and maybe hundred of years old. No one really knows…" Oooooh!

Some of the stuff I dragged home during the summer:

The next House of Moko thing is metal and I don't know anything about it yet. Anyone know what it is?

8FT Tiki I've never seen the black tiki before. Does his chest hold a pipe? Wendy

Hang10 - is this a Disney Polynesian Village glass? I found one like this that had also been painted. Mine is green. It has some paint spatter on the bottom, which led me to believe it had been painted by someone else along the way. Ideas?

thanks!

i picked up this little round opening bar. it is really beat up but i guess witco

Very, very cool Ex! If it were mine (I can dream) I would carefully clean it and leave it as it is. The pic at bottom rht looks Witco to my untrained eye. No opinion on the rest of the bar. Let’s see what others think. Congrats!
Btw, is it tall enough to be used as a bar?

[ Edited by: nui 'umi 'umi 2014-12-08 22:28 ]

That's definitely Witco -

In fact, the same bar was used as a hostess stand long ago at the legendary Chin Tiki in Detroit;

This photo was posted by Sven in the Chin Tiki thread over in "Locating Tiki..."

...Looks like the same one to me!

Where did you find yours, out of curiosity? It looks like a great piece!

--Pete

Witco indeedy. I had the same one in leopard.

Wow! Congrats again ex.
