yes, this, i knew before i saw boris' post. it's been featured quite prominently in quite a few polynesian art books.

Tiki-swizzle, first Swedish tiki-artifact!?!

This is huge! This might be the first artifact of pre-revival Tiki-bar culture in Sweden! Common wisdom has it that that there were only general South-seas exotica in Sweden, such as Pippi Longstockings father who is king of a south sea island, and Bengt Danielssons, the Kon-tiki expedition member with the largest beard on the raft. No polynesian bars or restaurants or modernist swankiness, just anthropology, kids-stuff, and hawaiian-waltzes on 78's. This is evidence of something different. The restaurant, Flygrestaurangen at Bromma airport WAS a modernist, swanky place (by Swedish standards which are understandably lower than Californian of the same period)! It was a classy place with a international "Round the world" menu, grill and chinese. In the early 70s a cocktail contest was held there. Bromma flygrestaurang should now be the focus of local tiki-exploration.

Is it the first? Probably! Swedish tiki-profile Stefan Kery made extensive explorations including interviewing with Hawaii-musician Yngve Stoor's widow and came to the conclusion that there was no Swedish tiki-culture before his import. Another question is dating the stick. It is really difficult to tell from the looks how old it is. The spelling of restaurant as "restaurang" suggests mid 60s or later. The looks of the tiki seem definately pre-revival. Any help with decoding, or the sudden appearence of other swedish tiki items is most welcome.

Wow!Huge indeed!
Did you know about this Zeta´s find?
Maybe you could provide the translation and further data.

Thanks. I thought it was a tiki (the bird, especially, looked to be of South Seas design), but knowing what kind of tiki is nifty!

L

One find still rockin!

T

The name Flygrestaurangen: Flyg means airplanes and airtraffic (related to english "fly"). Flygrestaurangen is airtraffic restaurant.

I did not know! This is getting really interesting. I'll definately look into that!

I ran the words on the matchbook (Den enda och första polynesiska cocktailbaren i Stockholm) through an online translator and the result was "The only and first Polynesian cocktail bar in Stockholm"

Not sure how much of a help this is to anyone, but I didn't see it posted before, so there's the translation :)

I'm gonna chop, chop, chop on wood.

Even though I post a lot of finds I really don't have much of a collection compared to some of you hoarders
I have nothing in my collection from some of the more well known places like the Bali Hai.

So I have decided along with my 1 a day find you will also get a little poem.

I don't mind
when its only 1 find

I cant tell a lie
its vintage Bali Hai!

(thats the best you get at 11:00pm!)

L

Went to the thrift and found this:

Trader Dick's ($0.98), OMC shakers($5.00), lone Treasure Craft (?) shaker($0.29), Treasure Craft mug($0.69)

works for me :)

You are on a roll Liz.I wish I had the time to go thrifting .

No doubt. I've been hitting the thrift stores lately and coming up empty. My collection will include Mr Bali Hai someday maybe.

Well after a long dry spell I made out pretty good. I went to a few ports o' call that I let re-seed for a while and found a Jard Hawaii Kai mug with the OMC sticker intact and some mini mugs and my wife found the OOH bowl.

Then I found these BIG Frank Schirman plaques dated 1968. These are super detailed. Not a bad day in Michigan. The bill is for size comparison.

T

the only other person I know that has that mug is BigBro. And this comes on the heels of your "I can't find as much good stuff" post in another thread. I coming down your way one of these days

Holy crap, Trav! Nice score!

Awesome Trav!! That Jard mug is one of my favorites, looks like in great condition as well just the normal rubbed off paint on the nose..

L

Great finds Trav!

I really like the wall plaques too.

Im new to the whole tiki collecting thing, and today was my first trip out with the specific mission of finding tiki. I went to 2 different indoor flea markets and 2 Goodwill stores. All I brought home was this 10 inch Ku tiki and the Tattan plant hanger that Ill use for something in the bar..I found no tiki mugs or barware :(
I also left behind lots of those giant fork and spoons with the tiki carved handles and a pair of 8 inch Tiki bookends with a Made in Philippines sticker. They wanted $20 for the bookends. I thought that was a bit spendy. What do you think?

T

I haven't kept up with posting some my finds. So here's a group picture of some my finds in the past few months. I have expanded my collecting of mugs to bobble-heads, Hawaiian dolls & nodders, & figures.

I also found this cool glass shell lamp. Still looking for the right shade.

This Jim Beam decanter is from the 1974 Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament.

P

heh, i found one of those decanters in an antique store in a town of about 1200 people. in as good condition as yours. on a top shelf, over my head, in the back. you just never know.

TT

I have to admit that the past couple of weeks have been "beddy beddy good to me" (to quote an old line). Two weeks ago I found a Mai Kai Rum Barrel (non-Tiki Farm) for $1 at a local thrift store, and two days ago I found two mugs for $12 at an antique store not far away. I love it when antique stores get snooty and have no idea what they are selling!

The Mai Kai Rum Barrel

One Kona Kai Maori...

Two Kona Kai Maori

And a Ku decorated fork and spoon for the front of my bar (I just had to show off the bar).

L

I am from Tampa and hit about ...hmm..well I would say 20 places when I home in July and got skunked at all of them.

I could not wait to get home to California!

Glad you find stuff Tam Tiki--no matter how slow between finds its better than nothing.

(There are some other people from the area as members on here btw in case you were ever interested in meeting other folks from online in person.)

TT

Yes the pickings here on the other "west coast" are a bit slim at times. But as long as I'm rummaging through thrift stores my wife doesn't have to worry about me :)

I found these guys today. The monkeypod mug says Aberdeen of Hawaii on the bottom. The other says Maikai.

I just got these three Orchids of Hawaii orange Hula Girl mugs. The unusual part is that they have raised lettering for Knobby's Mai Tai on the back. Anybody ever heard of this place or seen these before?

DC

L

Got this for a steal.
Woot! Woot!

TT

Those Hula Girl mugs are a great color, and will definately stand out on a shelf. Sort of like gazing at a nice sunset...

That's a great find Liz .Here is the auction.

My most recent finds over the past month. About as exciting as watching lizards fall out of the trees from our recent cold spell, but I find posting the picture to be therapeutic.

From left to right in order of least craptacular;

A) Orchids of Hawaii Surfer Girl
B) Jekyll and Hyde Club
C) Vintage Florida Tiki Ashtray, with made in Japan sticker on back
D) 3 newbie cheap-o mugs

Found this today.

:)That was my auction. I was just getting rid of doubles I had. I didn't think of posting links here...
It is a cool mug, I found first one, then hubby found another one a month later. It sold for more than what we paid for both
On ooga mooga the price is about 40, so I guess it did sell cheaper, if you really want to go by that..

Hahahahaha.....I love it Liz...B-)

"as exciting as watching lizards fall out of the trees from our recent cold spell" really? that sounds awesome and a lot more exciting then hanging out in the plague house (everyones sick except me). It really sounds a lot more exciting then a lot of things, I would love to see/watch that!

found this today at an estate sell and Goodwill..paid 25 cent for the big shot glass
all the other goods cost my 5 bucks so i made out like a Tiki bandit

Super Score...love those TV "shotgun" glasses. BTW, That napkin (green) is from the Desert Inn...an early one...I have a matching plate. People (collectors) love the early DI stuff.

Man! Is that an unglazed Universal Studios Frankenstein mug?? And I too would LOVE to find even one big shot glass. None here after YEARS of looking.

Well, 2009 ended with one last car club meeting & a coupla trades:
My buddy Bernie's friend scored 6 of these for 2 bucks!

This wine bottle isn't really Tiki, but it's one of those eclectic pieces that make each of our Tiki bars unique.

Lastly, I'm done Tiki hunting. I have found my holy grail!

It's prolly time I introduced you to the "Idol Mixtures" car club:

Left to right; Luke (Lukeulele) Pete (R/A Tiki Guy) Me & Bernie. That's Bernie's kick-ass house, by the way,

C

I got that exact same fish wine bottle as a Christmas gift. Mine is missing the label so it is nice to see your's. Now i know what it is for.

The first coupla weeks of 2010 were skunk-a-reenie-roo, but things have picked up the last week.
First up, Kon-Tiki Ports coffee mug:

Next up, Coco Joe's king & queen:

A coupla postcards from Trader Vic's, Statler Hotel, Boston:

One of my coolest finds, in awhile, a table card from the Hawaii Kai:

Went on a little hunting trip, yesterday, & scored a few items. First, a souvenir photo from Bimbo's 365 Club, San Francisco, home of "The Girl In The Fishbowl":

When I got it home, I discovered a couple pics of one of the girls in the photo, tucked behind it, kinda neat.

My first decanter, American Legion National Convention 1981:

Lucky Tiki S&P set with tag:

A nice OMC mug I've never seen before, with a glaze I've never seen before.:

A coupla comparison shots:

Anybody ever seen one like it?
I also scored my first Tretchikoff, yesterday. I think she's hot!:

Mine's peeling, a bit. Anyone got any glue suggestions, without hurting the label?
