not vintage- I have a couple of them- there is a company that sold them a few years back via a catalog like oriental trading- they sold all kinds of stuff and had a section for luaus and such.... typical plastic leis and party goods. The did offer a carved palm log tiki 36" tall - i'll check my catalogs when i get home and post the name here. I don't know if they are still in business or not.

That is the "Hawaiian Eye" bowl from the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel in Hawaii, as seen on the great crypto-mug menu.

Here's a few things we've found on recent travels...

A snazzy Treasure Craft fish-shaped chip 'n' dip with some pretty
far-out glazing on the inside...

...A set of Trader Vic's-ish pearl diver glasses in ruby red:

...This cool pearlescent glaze shell bowl; no idea on the manufacturer,
but it says "Calif USA" on the bottom. It's definitely an older glaze...

...These two ugly mugs (literally!) right in our own neighborhood;
the Pirate isn't marked Trader Vic's, but its identical to their pirate coffee
grog mug & Genghis Kahn is lookin' pretty rude. The swizzle is from Kon-Tiki Ports
Chicago. The whole magilla set us back a whopping ten bucks:

...An Orchids of Hawaii bamboo tiki lamp! It needs to be rewired and smells to hell of
cigarette smoke, but otherwise she's a beaut.

...And last but not least, I made my first official purchase ever at an estate sale up the street
from my house yesterday morning. I always get there too late after all the good stuff is long gone.

Not much tiki in the joint, save for this little fella. If you're gonna find one tiki mug in a pile
of junk, at least it's from Steve Crane!

Because there's some damage around the inside (looks like the inner reservoir was repaired), they threw him in for free with a pair of mid-century plant stands I was buying anyway.

And that's my inaugural post in tiki finds; Hope to have more soon just like it!

Two weeks time, doing six days of the swapmeet, one Goodwill grand opening morning(#97 in line), and the new San Diego vintage flea market had this pile of stuff for me:

The guy I bought this from laughed at me after I paid for it because he said he got it for free from his friend. I laughed back at him and told him to look it up on ebay and see how much more money I was going to make than he was off of it. I had a hassle with the same guy two days earlier over another item. He pulled the "I don't know what I want to sell it for, how much is it worth to you?" routine and I pulled the throw the item down on the ground, walk away briskly while yelling "I don't do appraisals!" in absolute disgust routine. I probably won't get a good price from him again.

Art survey book and Bulldog scrapbook

The scrapbook was from a Poway couple who went all over the country in 1963 to enter their bulldog in a bunch of dog shows. One of the shows was in Arizona(They won!), and they stayed at a place called the Tahiti Inn. Here are the pages with the Best Western Tahiti Inn stuff:

I found these last weekend at a thrift store here in Boston.
They were $2 apiece and I am physically unable to resist thrift store tiki mugs.
Can't identify them, but they are sure gonna go in my collection for now.

I just got this from ebay. The marking says Quyle Kilns, which is located in Murphys, CA. Not quite sure if it is "tiki", but I really like the glaze, shape and size, so it's in my collection now.

Good find - never seen this before! The glaze looks so modern, almost like MunkTiki. But since the kiln has been around since 1954, it should be vintage. You should contact them, maybe you'll find out the name and year: http://quylekilns.com

better yet, maybe they have a bunch of deadstock mugs layin around in storage... if they made one tiki mug they probably made other designs back in the day......

You're right about the glaze. It is what initially interested me.
I have contacted the company, and I'll post a reply when I hear back.

Funny thing is ...my vintage working hula girl lamp was free and my 6 strand rattan couch, 2 chairs, coffee table and end table were a total of $275. Crazy California---its like tiki just grows on trees around here..it really is a hard existance.

Here's an old Tapa Cloth from Tonga I got a month ago.

I've never liked a tapa pattern as much as this one, I was very happy to get it. It has fold lines, but it's extremely thick and heavy.

I also got a slit drum cheap, though I doubt it's PNG origin.

It's extremely comfy: that was one of my concerns too. It's also amazingly well-built. All the springs are intact, and those are the original cushions. I'm sure a lot of the surviving ones aren't as pampered as this set was, but they were built to last back then.

Semi-Tiki find. It fits in with the stuff I collect very well. But in all honesty, I don't mind if anyone touches my stereo. :)

My wife and I went on a "spur of the moment" trip up to the Hong Kong Inn Tue's nite. Snagged this stuff while in Ventura
Tiki is apprx.3 1/2' tall. I'm not crazy about the blk paint on the tiki and that will be changed. Float is a 12 incher,made by the mold method as opposed to blown and has salt deposits on the glass and rope. May be of Korean origin. Float was purchased at an antique store on main street. Another ice crusher in a color I don't have.
The bowl is sold at the HKI but I was very happy to get both Tommy and Jimmy Kwan to "autograph" it. I bought 4 of their dbl old fashioned and two highball glasses for posterity even though they don't have any HKI markings on them.


also picked up some "tiki bar" matchbooks at a thrift on main,and lotsa paper memento's from the HKI which I'll post at a later date

Lori Don't believe him-this is why he's called White Devil. That settee is so uncomfortable it will ruin your life! Fortunately,I know of a place in La Mirada where you can dump it. I know the dude that runs it. I might even pick it up for him cuz I owe him.

Here is something that some of you may be interested in seeing.This is a real shrunken head that i have acquired after years of looking.This is not a war tsanta,but it is a real head from South America that was made for the tourist trade pre 1950's.The ears are a dead giveaway between the real thing and a shrunken head made from molded animal skin.

I will probably never forget finding these Don the Beachcomber mugs because they were at a yard sale that was not really open until the next day but I saw them sitting on a porch rail as I drove by and from the street I went "WHOA, those are about to be mine!" I talked the lady into calling her husband who wasn't there in order to get a price quote. I had never seen that mug in person before then. The tiki on the right is not a mug but a vintage wall pocket.

Finally ran across a couple of old restaurant menus in the wild!
Both from the Dobbs House Luau, one is a dinner menu, the other a drink menu. Look at those prices!

Not sure which location these came from. I think they may date from the early 1960's.

It is interesting to note the top of the drink menu says:
"THESE FAMOUS DRINKS CAN BE SERVED ONLY IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN RUM OR LOCKER HERE"

I'd love to have my own bottles of rum stashed all over town. Sorta like an urban Jack Sparrow would I be Yarrrrrr.

They actually are legal to own in the United States,but many of them are in museums.The law states that it is not legal to deal in living organs and tissue.The shrunken head falls into the artifact category,so it is a grey area.This one came back from South America in the 50's from a service member.It was then given as a gift about 10 years ago to the person that I acquired it from.When closely inspected,you can see eyelashes,whiskers above the lips,hairs in the nostrils and other fine details.

Picked out of a basketful of matchbooks on Main street in Ventura on our recent trip to the Hong Kong Inn.

The "Quarterdeck Seafood and Grog was in Oxnard and Lahaina. I have not been able to find any info on this establishment.
The TV's San Francisco/Emeryville matchbook was in such good condition I thought it must be a repro or else the locations were alive and well. Then I noticed the lack of tel.area codes. The address also reflects the "old" S.F. location which pretty much thrived for forty years.
The Scottsdale "menehune" matchbook was ratty and the guts are gone. I grabbed it up anyway cuz the graphics are cool.
