Hey waikiki tiki--

I just bought that Polynesian Pot-Pourri record today & haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I notice it was recorded at the International Market Place in Waikiki. I was reading some local newspapers from 1963 and I came across an ad for a travelling show called Polynesian Revue: "Coming to Canada's western provinces from Waikiki's famed International Market Place to take Canadians on an authentic 'Adventure in Paradise'

• Vibrant Rhythms
• Songs of the Islands

That Les Paul-Mary Ford record looks great.

We do cut loose some whoop-ass on the tiki hunting in the Peach State, don't we? Some sort of a vortex here. Nice finds, Waikiki!

This is very true BK...we never have trouble finding any goods when we're in Georgia! I don't know what those West Coasters are talking about....the South is where all the tiki goods are hiding! N. Ga. is also the place to find cheap records too since the thrift stores have hiked their prices so much lately. And SDT...the Pot-Pourri album is very cool but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet either....I can't wait!

Wow! What a trip. I just bought the Pot-Pouri record on Ebay last week!

Just scored "Night of the Tiki" by Nason, "Supersonic Swingers" by Shag and "Bottomless Cocktail" by Shag for a total of $15.

Hey all! I, just on a whim, went down to my local record resaler and looked through the stacks to see what I could find. I was surprised to find not one, but two TWO Martin Denny records in the mix. I now have in my collection Quiet Village and A Taste of Honey. Just goes to show you, the stuff is out there, and most of it is in really good condition! I just picked up quite a few Frankoma Tiki pieces from the Trade Winds Club in Ohio. I picked up the T2 - Bamboo Mug, several different colored T9 - Clam Shell Salad plates, and three different colored Coconut Planters/mugs (T7).

Aside from Sabu the Coconut Boy, does anyone else collect Frankoma Tiki stuff?

I am still searching for the ever elusive T1 and T3 Tiki War God mugs....:) Wish me luck!

Here's the latest Tiki Finds from this past weekend here in Beautiful Las Vegas, NV. I got a "generic" Black Moai Mug, Salt & Pepper Set from The Islands in Denver, Coco Joe's Surfer Figure and Tiki Figure and a small, ceramic toothpick holder. I also got these fantastic, vintage Velvet Paintings. I think I spent about $10 total!

The rest: Pearl Of The South Pacific lobby card with cool huge Cook Islands tiki, Air New Zealand hei Tiki pendant, Hawaiian Village swizzle, Tahitian Bar swizzle (single sided version), Maori patu club, a very cool 60's Alps Japan "Hula Hula" mechanical hula dancer in her original box, 50's Japan Tiki table lighter, and a jewel-eyed coffee grog. Also some cool album finds, including (God help us) Marty Robbins "Song Of The Islands", Les Paul and Mary Ford, "Lover's Luau", another decent copy of Les Baxter's "Ritual Of The Savage" (I always liked this cover), and the full Reader's Digest "South Seas Magic" boxed set.

OK, are all you guys in Florida, California and Vegas that are getting these great tiki finds. I'm outside of Chicago and went gonzo when I finally got a couple of polynesian village frosted mugs! Help. How does a midwesterner with no hope of travelling expand their collection?

wish I could. But unfortunately, my tiki finds are going to have to be in the chicago/metro area. Any other hints?

Dawn, I can't say for tiki, but there is a great antique store in Lowell, IN that you might check out for mid-century stuff at good prices. I came home with a car load last time. It's just south of Chicago.

Thanks, I think I will definitely have to check that out. Oh, I'm also definitely going to make the flea market during Exotica! I can't wait.

Case in point...me and the Wahine took a spin around today to look for a new dehumidifier (fact of life when you live in mountainous areas), popped in a mall we hadn't been in in a while to take a look, and-sure enough...it yielded a 50's Japan Tiki hanging canle lantern, a Royal Hawaiian postcard, and four cool 1950's Chinese lacquer architectual panels. Total outlay? 12.00. Here they are.

and I thought the woman looked familiar but I couldn't place her. Then it hit me...

a fine record it is too, very old-fashioned sounding. I also bought a record called Hawaii's Golden Greats put out by the Variety Club of Hawaii with tracks by Alfred Apaka, Jack de Mello, Kui Lee, Martin Denny, Ed Kenney, The Surfers, Arthur Lyman, Marlene Sai, Bill Kawaii, Buddy Fo and The Invitations, The Aliis, Don Ho and Danny Kaleikini.

I hit up the local Goodwill yesterday and finally found me one of them Iolani shirts.
It's not one of the polyester ones, but a nice, light, blue cotton. I really dig the tiki pattern that runs up the edges of the zipper.
Can't wait to sport it behind the bar tonight. Ahhh...

Kind of light week for me so far. One monkeypod tiki, a pair of 40's Hawaiian S&P shakers, and one Hawaiian Inn Paddle Licker, but alas, a color I didn't have.

Folks...this was a day that will stay in my fond heart forever (even jaded, tiki-spoiled old me)... Took a jaunt up to one of my favorite flea markets today, an every Wednesday one about an hour and a half from here that is 6 football fields. Did one run, then set up and did about three "c" notes worth of selling and decided to give 'er another run. Produced a really nice OMC Hawaii Kai marked mug and a neat pair of moso bamboo drums with Pacific natives painted on the sides. Packed my gear and headed on up the road. Well, after a few minutes of tongue-in-cheek thought, and bowing to my take-no-prisoners nature while out hunting, and due in small part to some extra cash I could blow, I decided to hit a little town up the road past the flea a ways and see what there was to see. "Huh...New shop..." I said to myself. I walked in the door, looked to my left, and -BAM! Two Islander mugs, a scarce little Orchids R-12, a Kon Tiki Ports mug, an early OMC skull mug, and a Hawaiian Inn. This was all of a sudden getting good. 36 dollars later I was out the door and a damned happy camper. Next shop...3 Leilanis, the "no logo" ones, a buck a piece. Next shop, please...Asked the owner what she may have in the Polynesian line..."Seem like...yeah-there they are...I knew I had it. How about twelve bucks each. I bought it at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii back in the 70's. They call this Tapa." 36 more dollars and another doorway. By this time I'm wondering when Alan Funt is gonna come out and tell me I'm on candid camera. Next shop.....A Luau Hut, an Al Harrington Daga, a Polynesian Village (Mass.) Moai, an Orchids pignose, an Orchids Kahiki style Moai, a Westwood, and another OMC maori, this one unmarked.....35.00 for all. And so I headed home, feeling like Patton on his horse...17 mugs, three pieces of Tapa Cloth, and two drums later. I gave you all a sexy pose and then a comical one:

Hey, BK, great finds. I had that same little Japanese lantern tiki way back in college. The woman whose house I rented the back of was very religious and I'm 99% sure she purposefully smashed my lantern...something to do with graven images? It hung in a very secure, out of the way spot where she never went near normally. She admitted to "accidentally" breaking it.

Amazing day out, BK! But... which one is the sexy pose and which is the comical one? :)

Some nice finds BK! It must be nice living in a state that NO one collects Hawaiiana or Tiki!

BK I'm a big Hawaiiana collector as well so If you run into any of the hula nodders, wahine head vases, old ceramic hula girls or what eva, pick it up for me and I'll pay ship and what you want as long as you don't ask for no crazy amout! I'm really in the hunt for an old dodge motion hula lamp. they are made of brass. See if you ever find one.

Great stuff BK! More proof that tiki treasures can be found at reasonble prices in antique shops. I went to one of my favorite shops last week and found two different styles of blue Hawaiian Inn mugs with handles -- blue is a fairly rare color. In the more common shades of brown or green they usually go for about $30 on ebay. The dealer wanted $8 each. I passed these up 'cause I already had both styles in brown, and bought an OMC Mark Thomas mug and a pair of Kahiki S&P shakers instead.
I have struck out so many times at thrift stores lately that I've pretty much concluded its a waste of time and gas money to make a deliberate trip there.

Woo Hoo, the goodwill provides again!
Picked up a very nice Mr. Bali Hai w/ the lid today! He's in great shape except for one crack which looks to be a manufacturing flaw.
Does anyone know if this was a common flaw in these mugs? It almost looks like the clay cracked or seperated before the mug was fired.

I landed a pint-sized print of "Balinese Girl" by Tretchikoff for a paltry £4.
The frame that has come with it is naff but luckily i picked up a faux bamboo frame last week which should fit it.

Here is today's finds. More later from last weekend. We got an awesome bunch of 16 postcards for 25 cents each!
An OMC Karate kick mug. $8
A handled coffee cup mug which is similar to ones we have. $7.50
A Hawaiian language book. $1
A monkey pod bowl with tiki handle. $10
They had a large pile of this type stuff. The giant fork and spoon. But this was unique and useful.

Yesterday's haul... A pair of Westwood mugs.
But earlier in the week the gods were smiling and granted me a 3 piece sectional rattan sofa!
It needs some TLC but the price was unbeatable (well actually "Free" would have beaten it) and it fits perfectly in The Aloha Room.

I found this album with the cool cover at a garage sale over the weekend. The group is "Zot" & the album is from '85. The cover is the only thing tiki about it...just generic mid-80s rock. Bob Defrin is credited with cover design & art direction...for what that's worth.

I've gotta share this AMAZING SCORE I had this weekend at the local Swap Meet here in Las Vegas. One of my collector buddies phoned me to let me know he had spotted some Tiki Mugs. When I got there, I couldn't believe my eyes. After rounding up all 10 of these mugs, I walked away with all of them for a nice price of $20 for the whole lot!!! Just another example of "Good Tiki Kharma!"

OK, it's not a tiki find, but I just found a vintage 60's or 70's Pucci skirt at the buck a pound. Probly cost me 50 cents.

Some of us TCer's live in an area where tiki is nowhere to be found. Although one searches high and low, frequenting antique malls, flea markets and GoodWill stores, sometimes the only option is good ole eBay.

Anyway, I thought this was quite a bargain at only $5.00. Mug is from Hawaii Kai and statue is Coco Joe's.
