Tiki Finds

Although i have to say i'm not a huge fan of them, i picked up this coconut monkey from the thrift store the other day. I was looking for something else in particular and this caught my eye and is it was only $5 i couldn't leave it there. It's actually a money box. In that little area of coconut that is exposed just above it's feet and below it's hands there is a slot for coins.

Something else i came across at an antique store was this Sepik River? item which i didn't buy. It was only $60 or $65AUS dollars (around $55-60US), which i don't know if that is what you guys would consider as a reasonable price for what it is but to me here in Aus. it seemed fair but unfortunately it wasn't in the best condition.
It definitely looked old but there were several areas where it was damaged either from it being broken or what looked like insect activity, or both. From memory it also was male on one side and female on the other.

I was given this Tiki and I'm trying to see if I can get any information about it. It's about 4" tall, made of some sort of stone or ceramics, and has a small hole in the back of it where it appears it may have been mounted to something. I'm hoping to learn more about this, if anyone has any information please let me know, I'm very interested in learning anything about it. Thanks in advance.

Looks real close to this one by HIP:

The eyes, hands, toes, and area under the arms are slightly different. My best guess is yours is an earlier version that had later corrections done on the master to make the pieces cast easier.

Picked this up today at a yard sale. The man told me it was a prop used in one of the daytime soap opera's. Any one ever see it?

Tommy Bahama mug-was part of a gift pack put out a few years bsack by T B. The rum was not very good and has been discontinued.
Anthurium dish (found two) made by Tropical Clay, Hawaii. Founded 1980,still in business.
George Pasini (Arrow liquor corp.) mcm tiki style decanter. One side white, other side is black.
The glaze on the green decanter/shooters is so heavy that it’s hard to see the detail. I suspect it’s asian or maybe South American. No makers mark anywhere on the piece.

That b&w decanter depicts comedy and tragedy my friend. I found a pair of mugs with the exact design not too long ago glazed all in brown with no markings. After I looked at them for awhile I realized what they were and ended up giving them away to a friend of mine who is into the theater.(but that doesn't mean you should give your decanter away!

A Goodwill find.

The glass float does appear to be hand blown, although certainly not hundreds of years old.

On the underside of the lid. There were no cards with the box. I couldn't find anything related to this when I Googled 'Kontiki playing card set'.

I'm quite excited about this find!

It belonged the sellers 'well travelled' father in law. He didn't know if his father in law had ever been to New Zealand & estimated it might be from the 60s or 70s ~ details were vague.

I gave it a quick clean when I got home:

It's about 3ft tall & about 8" across.

The head features most of the carving detail & smoothest finish. The eyes are 1 1/4" wide, in low level 'mood lighting' the turquoise shows most.

The legs have less carving detail & are less smoothly finished.

Its definitely a 'forward facing carving' (ie. the back & sides are plain). The back did have a home made metal bracket which I have removed & will replace with something more subtle if I wish to secure it.

First big tiki carving = :) :) :)

This one thrift store

I actually “found" this this guy while trying to get a jump on my fall gardening chores. I was thinning out a clump of bamboo when I dug this moai style tiki out of the ground. I’m so glad I didn’t break it. It’s seems to be some kind of medium weight stone and it was painted at one time. It’s about 1’x7” and about an inch and a half thick. Too heavy to be plaster-might be some kind of concrete. the surface is very rough and abrasive. We moved into this place 40 yr.s ago and there was a slightly :nautical” look to the outdoor decor at the time

I came up to Reno a couple of days ago to visit my other brother (not David)and found a couple of nice things in the area.
A Bowl from Trader Dick's

Hala Kahiki style Moai Mug from The Tiki's in Monterey Park. I have never seen this style from that place. I checked ooga-mooga and couldn't find it from the Tikis but maybe I missed it. Maybe someone can direct me to it. I found four this style and one black more common moai. Thanks to Jon (Hang10tiki)I found this tiki on ooga mooga by searching "Painted Moai Mug" under OMC. My search of the Tiki's or the Tikis did not yield anything.

I have been searching for a fiberglass Marlin that I could afford for a while. This one is only 6' but only cost me $20.00

Wasn't looking for this but I couldn't resist it. A ships' wench bust made of resin.

A retro 14" diameter float.

My wife and I flew into town so I have to store my finds at my brother's house until I can drive back.

Thanks to Jon's PM (Hang10tiki)I found this tiki on ooga mooga by searching "Painted Moai Mug" under OMC. That page directed me to page 113 of BOT and there it was. Thanks to my wife for a wonderful find.

I'm very jealous. I would love to find a smaller marlin for my bar. I really don't have any room in the lounge, but I figure I might be able to fit a 5 foot (or smaller) one on the thatch above the bar.

As i said, i picked the book up in the store and flicked through it and i pretty much landed on the following pages. Seeing these carvings was enough to convince me to buy it. I've only just read the introduction and it is already very interesting and worth the purchase.

(It was when i landed on this pic that i was sold.)

I also picked these up the very crude salt and pepper shakers at the thrift store today. They were 50cents each and as tiki finds are few and far between around these parts i bought them.

I do believe the title of the book was "Sporting Wood in the Islands"

After i hit enter i thought about going back and editing the post because i realised 2 of the 3 pics might lead people to some assumptions that are not true. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I decided to have an ebay blitz of maori tiki bits & bobs:

A war club, 2 candle sticks, a little tiki (not ebay), a resin tiki, salt & pepper shakers & a partitioned bowl.

The littlest tiki I found today. I'm looking forward to getting some pistachio nuts to have out of the partitioned bowl :)
