Tiki Finds

Scored on the 3rd day of an estate sale...at 1/2 f'n price... : ) ...The sellers were more concerned that we were getting the ugly energy saving bulbs for free...Keep them please!! Vintage plastart Hawaiian male and Female lamps WITH original shades...will post pictures in their final resting spot in our tiki livingroom after we GENTLY clean...check out the tiki mask the male is holding...Our holy grail of lamps...and boy...do we have some nice lamps in our 25 years of collecting...

Fantastic find Tikilease, I stumbled upon a similar pair last September at the Alameda Swap Meet but by the time I saw them they were already sold. :( So I nabbed some pictures to add to my "Holy Grail" list. :D

Awesome Bora-Boris! Do you know what they sold for? We kind of stole these for 125.00 for the pair! BTW...going to the Alameda antique faire next month with a meet-up group...our first time. Really looking forward to it...

I'm guessing but maybe they were $375.00 for the pair? I think it was something like that.

I was hoping that you would post the lamps TL- Congratulations! I had the pleasure of meeting you as you were loading the lamps. I was the tikifreak with the big mustache taking the pix of your lamps. Glad to see you aboard-Welcome! Btw, I picked up a couple of items-my favorite a Nat. Geo. publication "In the Wake of Captain Cook" A few awesome tiki pic.s among a bunch of beautiful photos of verdant south sea isles .

Nah..he has that one DC. Actually he had two but he gave one to me just this past weekend.

Sandra Dee is correct, I had two Bumatays. I need the green Maori face mug and I have heard there was a small version of the Outrigger bowl. Almost there, all found in the wild, my friend!

Finds of the past few months:

A couple of interesting leis: one shell, one nut

some carvings--the box is from New Zealand

A tourist tiki and a ceramic shell. There aren't any markings on the shell and there are two holes of unknown purpose on the front. It's probably a hobby piece.

PINEAPPLES.

These are Polynesian Pottery. Are they from TV in Hawaii? They're not marked TV but they seemed to be a match for the mugs shown on the menu. These are real beauties.

Any Ideas?

OK! I can cross this off my Holy Grail list! I bought this from 3 French-Canadian guys who had no clue what it was! The one who sold it to me said a friend of his family used to to work for Pan Am, in New York, & this was hanging in the office. When Pan Am closed, he took it home. Now I'm on a mission to find some interior photos of Pan Am's offices.

Went to an Estate Sale today based off an early morning phone call from Psycho Tiki D and ended up meeting Trad'r Bill there . He and I were 5 and 6. The 1st person was talking tiki and the 2nd person was talking Witco so we were doubtful. Also the lady running the sale came out and told everyone that "the tiki room was to the left" when you walked in.

Didn't matter--out of the 5 Witco pieces guy 1 and guy 2 (who was a reseller) each bought the smaller washed out pieces and the other 3 were super overpriced.

Most of the tiki glassware was in this other room and Bill and I snatched it :)

Saw guy 1 trying to get into the room to beeline for the tiki mug table when I threw the grog mugs at Bill and beat him there and pretty much scooped up everything of value (hehe) and ended up with this:

We passed on the TV goldstem martini glasses (too pricey) and some fog cutters that we all have.

The house had a super nice 6-8 person bar and a great view out their window of the surrounding hillside.

Needless to say I hadn't been to an Estate sale in a long time and so this was a fun experience.

Also as a general rule when there is an ex-derby girl attending the sale don't stress....she will get to the tables before you do and buy everything you want thanks to her supreme blocking skills !

Yep, good times, good times... Sandra Dee and I decided to combine forces against the people in front of us in line - good idea (like I told her, we won!)

The former owners of the house were obviously big old-time tiki-heads... home bar, hawaiian stuff everywhere - seemed like our kind of folks. I had been to a similar (witco-laiden) house/estate sale on the same street, just a couple houses down. I wonder if they were friends...

Here is the home bar - the walls were stripped to unfinished drywall, so we figured they used to be covered in matting:

The prices were mostly on the high side, but Sandra Dee and I managed to swoop up most of the good stuff...

I was "Guy 1". I got there at 5:30am, all by myself, looking to spruce up my home tiki room. I bought a "washed out" Witco piece, my first one ever. I didn't see it as "washed out", but clearly, what do I know? Really didn't anticipate being blocked out from trying to get something that I was clearly on the way to reach, but, ya'can't win 'em all.

By the way, Sandra, I'll be sure to say hi on Wednesday at Forbidden Island, especially after reading such friendly comments as "I am just so happy Guy #1 was there 2 hours early and I got the majority of the stuff he was there for. haha awesome!--sometimes you can't win them all--well especially at Estate Sales. Sorry I was faster and in the right room. Must be all the years of tiki collecting that I have honed my skills no matter how early or late I get to a sale.

If thats your first piece of Witco check out the Witco threads--specifically Tiki David's posts about how to restore the finish so it looks new and not washed out. Psycho Tiki D restored a chair I picked up for him and his thread on that is pretty helpful

Or you can come to the Forbidden Island Parking Lot sale in September and buy a piece from me -- I will give you a real good price :)

I practically live at Forbidden Island so I will be sure to say hi when I see you there--heck I might even buy you a drink.....you know tiki spirit and all

A while back my friend saw this in someone's laundry room and shot me a picture of it. I made an offer on it and a few months later the owner needed the $$$ and sold it to me. At the time, I thought my offer was reasonable, until this one sold on ebay for $900. Compared to that ebay one, I feel like I stole mine!

Hey Buzzy You are the supreme finder of stuff imho. Regarding the large tapa; I found a very similar piece in Reno last summer. The sellers were a military/surfer family - the lady was from Samoa and told us that her mother had made the tapa . She seemed reluctant to sell the piece. She was displaying her sale items on it. I'm guessing that because I was expressing an interest in southern and western Pacific items and culture she changed her mind as we were walking away and asked if I would pay ten bucks for it. I had a little "buyers remorse" when I got back to L.A. The tapa seemed to be made of a medium-weight canvas and you can see a very tight weave (everybody knows tapa is layers of pounded and glued Paper Mulberry bark ).Interestingly, my piece has the same undyed border,the same type numbers ( mine is #26 with blank squares on either side),and the 12" or so bar adjacent to the #. Any help/insight from the grand master would be much appreciated. Oh, please don't send me a bill- I have moved several times since you sent the last.
