Great finds Sabu!

We were there today as well, but we didn't buy any tiki (it looks like you beat us to all the good finds). Did pick up a few blue amerbol cylinders though.

We did go two weeks ago, and did score three mugs though. Nice finds, but no great deals. The sellers seem to be very aware of the rising cost of tiki... at least mugs. I'll try to post pix.

BTW, you wouldn't happen to be the guy with the Hawaii Five-0 ring tone, would you?

I'm excited that garage sale season has returned to these northern parts. I haven't been to many yet but I've had a few nice scores at church rummage sales in recent weeks. Finds from the past 2 months:

3 Trader Vic's Hawaii mugs, $2 each.

2 Libbeys mugs $1.99 each. I took these for homemade at first because of the unusual glaze job. Not keen on the design or paint job but I like how heavy they are.

Coco Joe hapawood letter/napkin holder 50¢

I love this little (6") green guy. He's probably resin but claims to be "Granitex". 25¢

I agree with Sweet Daddy Tiki...it's nice that the Garage sale Season is upon us. Here are a few finds from recent weeks (though not all of these are from garage sales):

These Lovely Hawaiian Distillers decanters were found at an estate sale for $2 each. The hula girl still has liqueur left inside. The two Tiki shaped mini bottles are both full and sealed. One has Okolehao and the other is Macadamia Nut liqueur.

The row of Marquesan warriors are most likely crappy tourist souvenirs...(very crudely carved) but I wonder if there is a part of the set that is missing, such as a canoe for them to sit in? Anyone?

These lovely swizzels hail from the Calgary Beachcomber, which from my info, existed for only a few years before it burned down in the late 70's. I've never seen anything from this restaurant which were unique to the Calgary location (most paraphenalia also listed the Victoria and Edmonton locations) so this find made me very happy.

Here's an ad from the Calgary phone book for the Beachcomber (sorry for the cropping, shutterfly doesn't like odd shaped photos):

Found this weird carving at a thrift store. No markings. It's kinda ugly, but I've never seen another like it (any info on this?):

Finally, I found another resin moai at the Home Outfitters to go with the one I found a few weeks ago. Put a can of soda next to them so you have a better idea of scale:

Sweet Daddy Tiki - Amazing find, those three Hawaiian Trader Vic's mugs. God, those are ugly and fantastic at the same time. To add to bigbro's lexicon, the mugs from that Trader Vic's location are the Rodins of tiki mugs.

Nope. That's not me. I bet it's another Tiki-Centralite though. There were a lot of us there on Sunday. Anyone want to fess up?

Sabu

Great finds slacks & sweet daddy!
Slacks I had no idea there was a calgary location, and I also had no idea the swizzles came in that colour!

:up:Last Friday decided to check out my neighbourhood second hand shop on my way to work. To my delight I found the three swizzles for $1 each. I should have gone through them all more carefully, but I was already late.

The red one is from The Reef in Waikiki and features a young lad paddling an outrigger. The Blue one is from The Beachcomber Victoria, and the Green one is from the Kon-Tiki in Portland.

During my lunch break I wandered through the Sally Ann and found the ceramic tiki. I rarely check there because they hardly ever have anything tiki related.

The Jackknife is from Value Village. I guess it's supposed to represent a totem pole, but it seems to be a bazaar hybrid between african, bali, and alien.

:up:Here are a few other swizzle colours from The Beachcomber that was in Victoria. I believe it closed in about 1984. The one that looks black is actually a very dark translucent ruby colour. The red one on the right is from the Edmonton location.

Aloha,
Got back from Palm Springs just recently...had to go through my grandpa's stuff. I found a few Don the Beachcomber items...a menu in great condition, key holder, newsletters, three sets of chopsticks with bamboo cases...one engraved with the Executive Chef's name, and a something I've never seen before in any auction or collection...a blue suede blazer by Halston with Don the Beachcomber logo, it was worn by upper management but this one, by the condition it's in, was never used. On the same note, going thru some of my mom's stuff...three Tiki Bob's in immaculate condition, two Tiki Bob wine lists, a set of salt & pepper shakers still in the box, a Harvey's mug in not so great condition and a few mugs that I'm not quite sure what...I'll probably post pictures at another time so maybe those more knowledgable can help identify...and a slew of bowls. Still got more stuff to go thru...I'll keep you posted.

Wow! Good to see you back here, BT, and congrats on those heirlooms.
I want to hook you up with Jeff Berry, the resident Don The Beachcomber authority, with whom I want to do the definitive Beachcomber book in the near future. Please do not part with any of that stuff until it has been recorded.
...and I was just wondering where you were, after re-reading that Tiki Bob's thread!

I usually don't post my finds here but since I took the pictures for another thread I thought I might as well.

This is a shirt I picked up in Corvallis, OR last weekend. It appears to be from the 1962 World's Fair (Seattle) and shows the space needle right there on the back. If anyone has info on the maker of this shirt I'd love to know more about it. I'm thinking that it was a souvineer type item but I'd love verification if possible.

I lived in Corvallis for a few mo's in the 80's, very NICE shirt, space age needle and hula all together at last!

Here are a few finds from this week

Anyone know anything about the plate above, it sez South Pacific and has a "Legend of the South Pacific on the plate bottom.

This wooden figure looks like a hopi Kachina (a bit) or native american ball and stick player maybe, but It's possible that he is from the South Seas. His Floral shirt and bandana could be either N.A. or Oceanic but his mossy "fro" hair looks more Fijan or some such, any ideas?

Iorana,
ST

P.S.

Nevermind the ball player, he is Native American most likely, probably Mayan from S. Mexico, a ball and stick player.
Here's a modern day Indian playing:

Now if I can just figure out where the plate is from.

COOL SHIRT Mildreds of Hawaii was founded in 1952 by Mildred Dohi. That is about all I could find. Must be a little newer because the older label was green and just said Mildreds of Hawaii with a picture of the island chain on it.

Found this in a used furniture store. The man told me that it was Balinese. I don't know it's origin, but, I like the details of the paint and the Ku looking head on top.

Hey guys, we've got this great thread going over in Beyond Tiki called Beyond Tiki Finds, but it's been quite quiet lately.

It's a shame, because Beyond Tiki Finds is one of my favorite threads!

So, if you have something that isn't quite tiki, post it over here!

It's feast or famine here in Puritanland but the Tiki gods have been smiling on me for the last two weeks. Ready?

-carved tiki mask: $10
-Kowloon mug still in box in excelsior $15 (there's a packet of sugar stuck in the box that gives the Kowloon phone number as "CEntral 3-0077" so that's some old sweetener right there!)
-Kona Kai S & P: $5
-perfect, painted Otagiri Moai from the Hawaii Kai: $10
-Otagiri fogcutter mug with Kon Tiki face: $12.50
-Mr. Bali Hai made exclusively for Bob's Big Boy, Gary, Indiana (just kidding): $25
-way-old Otagiri Fu Manchu: Three buckaroos!

Take that, Puritans!

wow great finds pappy!
look at all that vintage tiki, such a sight for sore eyes :)

T

Wow Pappy you really have some great finds there!!! Got any additional pictures of the Kowloon Mug? I've never seen that one before. Your good luck makes me think that I will find some Tiki here in Mass also?

Tikisgrl

Check this out. Stumbled up on this book at an antique mall this afternoon. Paid $2.00 for it....When I found it I nearly ran to the cashier to pay for it. My wife thought I was nuts because we had just gotten there. Hot Damn! this is a great end to what has been a long quest. I was surprised to see pictures of Leeteg's Tahitian hide-away. Sort of Art-Modern meets Oceania...very cool indeed.

Swamp

Pappy - I think as fantastic as all those finds are, the most fantastic is that sugar packet. To find obscure paper items like that with an actual tiki logo... that's so rare! I couldn't possibly twist your arm to take a closeup photo of it, could I?

Swamp - Not so shabby yourself! There's a copy of that book right now in eBay Stores with a Buy-it-Now of $150 on it. Thanks for the nice closeup pic from the cover. Any way we could twist your arm to post a couple of your favorite pics from the inside?

Awesome finds, all!

Sabu

Roger that...

I've got a scanner sitting here with me that comes in quite handy. I'll get a few more scanned over the next few days.

Hello all...
Here are some of my finds from the last few weeks...

A very cool old mug. No markings, any ideas where this one is from?

Found at a mall, believe it or not. Not bad for mass-produced Indonesian carving...

Two large and very heavy plasters masks. Gaudy colors, but I kinda like 'em...

Really cool old placemat with tikis. Copyright date 1963.

Detail of the tiki

Some great handmade mugs. Lots of bright colors on the inside.

More to come!

Oasis Weekend's haul.. some new, some from thift/antique stores

Copper-Craft Maori Etching, Ever-Wear Trav-L-Bar (with key!)10 bucks, Big Shell by Treasurecraft, Munktiki Coconut Monkey, Tapa Tie, Matt Reese Tiki, Oasis Glasses, Shrunken Head Mug (not pictured bug hunking square monkeypod bowl only 4 bucks!)

tiki by Matt Reese

Copper-Craft two bucks!
can't find much info on this one.. "Gary Roberts '73" on the front, care instructions on the back read "This genuine copper etching has a protective coating to prevent tarnishing. it does not require cleaning and should not be polished. dust lightly only when necessary. this is a quality product of Copper-Craft, Ltd. box 1677 Aukland, N.Z."

can you post a close up of the tapa tie? including the label?

something like that could help us poor saps that are stuck behind a desk have an Aloha Friday whether the boss approves it or not...

after turning arizona upside down in a relentless search for tiki over the last month & a half, I finally scored.
I have trolled the thrifts & antique stores in scottsdale, phoenix, tempe, mesa & parts of tuscon.
It has been largely fruitless until yesterday. I finally bagged a worthy prize in a phoenix antique collective:
it looks to be a spurlin "vicious virgin" mug.
I can now leave Arizona a much happier man.
stay tuned, pix to follow...

T

So the finds have been few and far between lately but here are some interesting things I have found:

No collection is complete with out a Tiki party towel...

Johnny Yee's Cape Cod

Handsome moai Salt seeking life partner... should be pepper preferably

SMMSS seeking SMFPS for long term commitment

please send a message if you have a pepper for me...

Another Moai

Matches from Boston's Polynesian Village

Maori travel brochure with pictures inside

last but not least a few postcards

M

My Wahine found this at an estate sale this morning. Is it the real deal? It's over 6 foot tall. Awesome score.

Aloha

Went over to Bradenton this weekend to visit the Parents. Stopped by the local sea shel shop and managed to score some sweet looking Japanese net floats for about $16.00 a piece... large floats, thick glass, minor imperfections, and with thick rope. I also managed to pick up some cute baby sized puffer fish for a song (have to go to St. Augustine next weekend for the big jumbos). I also ran across a few antique mugs in a thrift shop (saw them through a window), but the place was closed for Memorial Day. Hoping the Parent's can stop by there tomorrow for me.

I forgot how cheap stuff can be if you actually get out there and find it... I have become a victim of internet shopping for too long.

Looks like I will have a few Japanese net float lamps by week's end :) Gods I love making stuff by hand!

Had a good trip to Value Village recently, the haul included a heap of Hawaiiana records, and 4 big frames. Most of the records were scratched to hell, and the covers had a lot of wear around the edges.

Here are two of the beat-up album covers cut and put in two of the frames. The mats have actual strips of raffia/grass woven and glued on them - it's not just printed.

T

not that I bought one, but there is a new tiki bike at Walmart.

Today's thrift scores:

Ashtray from Value Village

A pair of Beachcomber (Edmonton, Victoria) matchbooks from a church rummage sale

I think it's pretty clear that the Tiki gods want me to start smoking.

Nice finds, Daddy T.

I'm pretty sure that's an authentic Witco, McTiki. Great Score!

Here's the same beast from an old postcard of mine:

I found a few mugs today, nothing really exciting in the mugs but, this was my great find of the day I believe that it is Coco Joe's

McTiki:

It looks like a tiki I just saw at the Hala Kahiki in Chicagoland.

I think it is Witco since a lot of tiki stuff there is, but I don't know for sure.

Zazzy find Tikisgrl :D That is CoCo Joe DECORAMICS #409, Kukailimoku, The Hawaiians' supreme god of war. This Tiki in "Puna Rift" lava, denotes a mightyness and fierceness as powerful and violent as was its substance when it burst from the volcano. (12")

It was a good day at the Flea Market today, but boy was it hot!

Tapa folio holder, 16" x 11", for $3

Fred Roberts brown tiki, Tiki Bob's San Francisco, Kon-Tiki tall mug, plus (not shown) bucket mugs from Stockton Islander and Lanai San Mateo, all for $40

D

mega cool, my father in law knew he had some 'tiki things' in the garage..and he brought us two Trader Dicks surfer girl mugs!

today, at a garage sale i found the diving helmet ice bucket.. 7 bucks. just like Satan Sin's Most Glorious Ice Bucket on Mars

K

Dogbytes,
Ookoo and I have the same diving helmet. I use it to hold tea bags. BTY, It was great seeing you at Oasis 6. Thanks for the hospitality (drinks and aloha spirit). Hope to see you soon.

Any info on these carvings? Not that "Tiki" but still interesting. Any info would help!

I found a Don The Beachcomber Honolulu in a lot of matchbooks this weekend. I'm not sure that's Don Beach or some model.

I picked up these two this weekend. Can someone advise as to the figurine on the left? My first thought is that its from New Guinea, Papua maybe but I am not sure. Of course there are no markings. I left another one just like it in the resell shop. I think its a pretty cool little piece and will still display in the bar.

Take care all.

Maybe PNG inspired, but I don't think it is actually from PNG.

Some recent finds. Not much in the way of mugs but some nice Coco Joes stuff and a couple of carvings.

T

Been sorta quiet around here lately. Took a trip up to northern Washington over Memorial Day-- Lynden. Found a DAGA warrior mug from the Maui Lu, had a painted logo on, not the usual raised letters like you usually find. I'll try to post a picture.

This last weekend-- Tiki Leilani from an antique store, and from the local record shop-- Arthur Lyman's "Polynesia" and Bing Crosby's "Blue Hawaii". Fantastic! They had a copy of Martin Denny's Exotica Volume 3, still in shrink wrap, but too expensive for me!

I found a leilani in a thrift store here in Portland for $2 today.
No need to post a photo, you know what they look like.

Ha! I've got company coming and drove to the Dollar Tree to pick up plates, cups, etc..Turned down the wrong isle and ran upon a display of tiki items. The table tikis were aboout 6 inches high and cast of resin. They were only a buck. The rest were tiki lights, flimsy mugs, straws, and grass skirts. cheap. cheap. cheap. I HATE commercialization!

If I had the camera I would have provided a photo. Tiki on a tight budget. Ugh.

I don't know if I'd assume that those are safe for the aquarium. You don't know what kind of chemicals might leach out of those things.
