Scored on the 3rd day of an estate sale...at 1/2 f'n price... : ) ...The sellers were more concerned that we were getting the ugly energy saving bulbs for free...Keep them please!! Vintage plastart Hawaiian male and Female lamps WITH original shades...will post pictures in their final resting spot in our tiki livingroom after we GENTLY clean...check out the tiki mask the male is holding...Our holy grail of lamps...and boy...do we have some nice lamps in our 25 years of collecting...

G

Amazing score. Any chance of getting you to post a shot of the shades?

gabbahey

T

Yep...they need some work but we are gently cleaning them as we speak...

Amazing! What a FIND!

BB

Fantastic find Tikilease, I stumbled upon a similar pair last September at the Alameda Swap Meet but by the time I saw them they were already sold. :( So I nabbed some pictures to add to my "Holy Grail" list. :D

T

Awesome Bora-Boris! Do you know what they sold for? We kind of stole these for 125.00 for the pair! BTW...going to the Alameda antique faire next month with a meet-up group...our first time. Really looking forward to it...

BB

I'm guessing but maybe they were $375.00 for the pair? I think it was something like that.

I was hoping that you would post the lamps TL- Congratulations! I had the pleasure of meeting you as you were loading the lamps. I was the tikifreak with the big mustache taking the pix of your lamps. Glad to see you aboard-Welcome! Btw, I picked up a couple of items-my favorite a Nat. Geo. publication "In the Wake of Captain Cook" A few awesome tiki pic.s among a bunch of beautiful photos of verdant south sea isles .

12-inch tall Moai, found in a second-hand store in Foxton (the home of the famous Foxton Fizz):

Hey David...That was my partner in crime Diane...I told her about the C.L. ad and suggested she go and try to score at that estate sale and she done good! She said you were nice..: ) ..I've actually been a member since 2010 but have never posted...but being overwhelmed by the beauty of those lamps I needed to this time...I may post other pics at some time since we have been collecting Tiki's , hawaiiana and surfing related items for some time now and have our own little oasis in Costa Mesa...take care- Lease

Nah..he has that one DC. Actually he had two but he gave one to me just this past weekend.

So I guess I "found" a Bumatay in the box he handed it to me in =)

Sandra Dee is correct, I had two Bumatays. I need the green Maori face mug and I have heard there was a small version of the Outrigger bowl. Almost there, all found in the wild, my friend!
Or three, if you count the Vicious Virgin?

Isn't there a bowl with giant KU heads holding it up in 3 places also??

I swear the Islander had such a bowl.

Psycho Tiki D you need to find THAT!

N

Finds of the past few months:

A couple of interesting leis: one shell, one nut

some carvings--the box is from New Zealand

A tourist tiki and a ceramic shell. There aren't any markings on the shell and there are two holes of unknown purpose on the front. It's probably a hobby piece.

PINEAPPLES.

These are Polynesian Pottery. Are they from TV in Hawaii? They're not marked TV but they seemed to be a match for the mugs shown on the menu. These are real beauties.

Any Ideas?

UT

I picked up this nice tapa last weekend. Measures about 5' x 5'

Not posted on here for a while, so here's a few things i've managed to find in the wild since my last visit...

Brimfield Antique Show:
The requisite LPs

Not sure the age or origins of this guy, but he was only 20 bucks

I love this guy &, he too, was only 20 bucks

OK! I can cross this off my Holy Grail list! I bought this from 3 French-Canadian guys who had no clue what it was! The one who sold it to me said a friend of his family used to to work for Pan Am, in New York, & this was hanging in the office. When Pan Am closed, he took it home. Now I'm on a mission to find some interior photos of Pan Am's offices.

Ahh, I miss your sweet-talk. I never realized how freakin' big this thing was. It wouldn't fit in the backseat of my Silverado 2500HD! I had to put it in the back. Good thing I had something to wrap it in & a cap on my truck, cuz it poured on the way home.

Wow, that Witco is amazing. And a hard act to follow.

I found these on etsy. While not exactly "tiki", they will look good in the room with my new rattan furniture.

This is not Owl Central! :P

I was going to suggest you move your raptor-oriented find over here, but then I found it's brother on page 3 of the same thread!

Also see this and that about TC's continuing battle against owl infestation. Yeah, that's right, that's a Futurama reference.

Yes, I am kidding...
sort of.

Oh, and welcome aboard KittyKat65

hahaha, I love it. OK, there will be no future o..l references from me. I promise! But, c'mon, they are kinda cool, no? :D

OK, just because I have a twisted mind, now you've got me on the look-out for a Maori carving of a morepork (New Zealand's native owl).

You have been warned...

I just realized I hadn't posted any of my finds from September, 20 til yesterday. Shame on me! Buckle up while I post at warp speed!
My Vegas/SoCal trip, in November, yielded this stuff:
Amazing bowl from Aku Aku

New Lava Letch & Trader Vic's L.A.

Napkin from Leilani Hut

And, unbelievably, the mug I needed to complete my "Stripper" series

No there is one more--where she is in the mug completely.

I will find it for you--I know I just saw it at an antique store---now to remember which one.

Ugh! Really? Please help me! I must find her!

Winter was pretty slow. Just the usual suspects.

Went to an Estate Sale today based off an early morning phone call from Psycho Tiki D and ended up meeting Trad'r Bill there . He and I were 5 and 6. The 1st person was talking tiki and the 2nd person was talking Witco so we were doubtful. Also the lady running the sale came out and told everyone that "the tiki room was to the left" when you walked in.

Didn't matter--out of the 5 Witco pieces guy 1 and guy 2 (who was a reseller) each bought the smaller washed out pieces and the other 3 were super overpriced.

Most of the tiki glassware was in this other room and Bill and I snatched it :)

Saw guy 1 trying to get into the room to beeline for the tiki mug table when I threw the grog mugs at Bill and beat him there and pretty much scooped up everything of value (hehe) and ended up with this:

We passed on the TV goldstem martini glasses (too pricey) and some fog cutters that we all have.

The house had a super nice 6-8 person bar and a great view out their window of the surrounding hillside.

Needless to say I hadn't been to an Estate sale in a long time and so this was a fun experience.

Also as a general rule when there is an ex-derby girl attending the sale don't stress....she will get to the tables before you do and buy everything you want thanks to her supreme blocking skills !

Thanks PTD and Bill--fun day!

Oh and completely unrelated I just got this

[ Edited by: SandraDee 2012-05-11 11:23 ]

Yep, good times, good times... Sandra Dee and I decided to combine forces against the people in front of us in line - good idea (like I told her, we won!)

The former owners of the house were obviously big old-time tiki-heads... home bar, hawaiian stuff everywhere - seemed like our kind of folks. I had been to a similar (witco-laiden) house/estate sale on the same street, just a couple houses down. I wonder if they were friends...

Here is the home bar - the walls were stripped to unfinished drywall, so we figured they used to be covered in matting:

Some nice Witco we had to pass on (due to price):

Second dude in line got this one (but nothing else, so there :)

Cool table tent that someone else got:

I passed on this lamp, er, major award:

The prices were mostly on the high side, but Sandra Dee and I managed to swoop up most of the good stuff...

Tiki-gasm!

I paid a fair price for these heavy-hitters, but was happy to scratch them off my mug bucket list:

And here are some cool table tents and swizzles from The Diamonds(?) - need to research that one:

Good times!
-Trad'r Bill

How come your pictures always look better than mine??

Glad you got a photo of that planter..I was trying to explain it to Duane.

At least it wasn't in nice condition--although I am sure we will see it at Alameda.

I am just so happy Guy #1 was there 2 hours early and I got the majority of the stuff he was there for.

Oh sweet victory!

Sandra and Bill,

Great work on the double-team effort, I am glad it paid off for you both. I wish I could have been there, but too far on too short of notice.

Later,

PTD

Hi,

I was "Guy 1". I got there at 5:30am, all by myself, looking to spruce up my home tiki room. I bought a "washed out" Witco piece, my first one ever. I didn't see it as "washed out", but clearly, what do I know? Really didn't anticipate being blocked out from trying to get something that I was clearly on the way to reach, but, ya'can't win 'em all.

By the way, Sandra, I'll be sure to say hi on Wednesday at Forbidden Island, especially after reading such friendly comments as "I am just so happy Guy #1 was there 2 hours early and I got the majority of the stuff he was there for. " and "Saw guy 1 trying to get into the room to beeline for the tiki mug table when I threw the grog mugs at Bill and beat him there and pretty much scooped up everything of value (hehe)"

Impressive... Really in the tiki spirit.

[ Edited by: FacesPlace 2012-05-11 13:30 ]

haha awesome!--sometimes you can't win them all--well especially at Estate Sales. Sorry I was faster and in the right room. Must be all the years of tiki collecting that I have honed my skills no matter how early or late I get to a sale.

If thats your first piece of Witco check out the Witco threads--specifically Tiki David's posts about how to restore the finish so it looks new and not washed out. Psycho Tiki D restored a chair I picked up for him and his thread on that is pretty helpful

Or you can come to the Forbidden Island Parking Lot sale in September and buy a piece from me -- I will give you a real good price :)

I practically live at Forbidden Island so I will be sure to say hi when I see you there--heck I might even buy you a drink.....you know tiki spirit and all

Aloha!

EDIT

sorry I just read you got there at 5:30am for a sale that didn't start until 10am? thats some dedication!!! Navy Grog on me when you see me next--be sure to remind me as its the least I can do!

yeah you need to move :)

I appreciate the offer Sandra, but it's not necessary. I will say hi next time I see you at Forbidden Island though. Enjoy!

Aloha Facesplace Karma will eventually repay you for choosing the high road. My wife and I are looking forward to crossing paths with you someday. We like your style.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program....

Some finds from today's paper show. Did not have a lot of time to spend there this morning, but still managed to find a few goodies.

DC

Had some time for garage sales and thrifting last weekend.

Found a few new rattan pieces for the house.

A couple of Leeteg prints in nice frames.

This really cool mid-century lamp with a nice diffuser shade on the inside of the wicker shade.

And my favorite, a vintage Tiki beer coozie!

DC

Love that table, DC.

Looks like everyone has been busy...

My finds...

Various tiki lighters.

No markings, tiki holding clubs.

Black gloss Moai Tiki's mug.

Orchids of Hawaii lidded pineapple mug.

Daga bamboo mug from Little Orphan Annies Honolulu, Tommy Bahama tiki and Tiki Farm moai mugs.

Scrapbook with black and white pictures from Oahu.

Giant bag of swizzles yieled these tiki ones!

I like these! Good haul !

Those were $3.00 each...today...at an antique show...

What a great page to read and view. Wendy

Super stoked on these from this morning. The Tahitian rum barrel isn't on Ooga-Mooga and there's no markings, so if anybody has any manufacturing info, that would be great.

Happy hunting!

Some new and newish finds stuff:

United Airlines Tiki Frame 3D Hawaii map

A while back my friend saw this in someone's laundry room and shot me a picture of it. I made an offer on it and a few months later the owner needed the $$$ and sold it to me. At the time, I thought my offer was reasonable, until this one sold on ebay for $900. Compared to that ebay one, I feel like I stole mine!

12' x 16' tapa

too big to photo the whole thing, so that's 1/4 of it

Carved 21" Maori waka:

Postcard with a Maori carver:

Daga Maui Lu Luau mug:

Buzzy Out!

Hey Buzzy You are the supreme finder of stuff imho. Regarding the large tapa; I found a very similar piece in Reno last summer. The sellers were a military/surfer family - the lady was from Samoa and told us that her mother had made the tapa . She seemed reluctant to sell the piece. She was displaying her sale items on it. I'm guessing that because I was expressing an interest in southern and western Pacific items and culture she changed her mind as we were walking away and asked if I would pay ten bucks for it. I had a little "buyers remorse" when I got back to L.A. The tapa seemed to be made of a medium-weight canvas and you can see a very tight weave (everybody knows tapa is layers of pounded and glued Paper Mulberry bark ).Interestingly, my piece has the same undyed border, the same type numbers ( mine is #26 with blank squares on either side),and the 12" or so bar adjacent to the #. Any help/insight from the grand master would be much appreciated. Oh, please don't send me a bill- I have moved several times since you sent the last.
Thanks and Cheers
