Tiki Finds

A few recent finds... nothing too special.

I got lucky with an estate auction. 24" Moai with shell inlaid eyes and rongorongo script on his back, a club(?) from Easter Island with rongorongo script, a rongorongo tablet, a dancing paddle from Easter Island with feathers attached to it, 3 shrunken heads from Ecuador, a small Aboriginal painted saw fish bill, and a trio of Maori tourist weapons.

What I missed out on was a gorgeous carved RongoRongo bowl from Easter Island. This thing was about 30" beak to beak:

What a great score Cavemoai. I'm a sucker for anything from Easter Island and get excited when i find just one piece but to get that many different ones in one haul is amazing. It's a shame you missed out on the bowl, that thing is awesome. Do you know how much it sold for?

It sold for way too cheap, $75. I meant to put another bid in, but forgot all about it until it was too late.

Damn! That converts to about $110AUS but i'd happily pay that much (and more) for something like that. Not the type of thing that you're likely to see very often. If at all.

Spent the day scouring the Minneapolis/St. Paul area yesterday, and scored a small Mainlander mug, an Otagiri Moai mug, and a bottle of my favorite pastis (which I'm enjoying right now). What was unusual, was that every place we went to had mugs, masks, and other Poly-pop paraphernalia, so people must be unloading their collections, because I usually come up dry.

A wooden mask (probably African but will do the trick) and 2 interesting wooden mask, those 2 are creepy and they have goats hair and 1 actually real goat teeth attach to it. They called Tschäggättä and they are for carnival. They will fit perfect with the little voodoo corner I want to create in the bar.

5-inch glass float, badly in need of a new tie job. The old rope is pretty brittle. Also a CocoJoe's lava Lono, a little worse for wear.

A United Airlines Ku from and estate sale. A Cook Islands god, about 40" tall, from an antique store. A Pineapple mug from Trader Vic's Honolulu. A small (18"X30") piece of tapa cloth from a thrift store.

Shown in my shopping cart at Goodwill: A Vicious mug by Benzart, Tiki Boy by Joe Vitale, Exotiki ny Doug Horne, Radar Vic, and Cheeseburger in Paradise Maui all manufactured by Tiki Farm. A Tussler by THOR. The big guy is a Waka Taua bowl by Gecko! The whole lot set me back a whopping $6.13.

Buzzy strikes again - what a haul!

So there's this little thrift store in town that I pass by on my evening walks. Normally there's not much of interest on display - maybe some glassware or old appliances - but last night I noticed this marvelous Haeger clamshell bowl sitting in the shop window:

It is 14 inches from end-to-end and holds 40oz easily! I can't wait for the opportunity to stack it high with crushed ice and use it as a communal bowl. If anyone has some insight on this bowl I would be grateful. Cursory research has turned up next to nothing on this design or model number, So I can only guess at its age by the signs of wear.

After I grabbed the shell bowl I took another sweep of the window display, and caught sight of what looked like pineapple husk.

If I am correct, this is a relatively new boutique bowl, "life cast" from an actual pineapple. Not bad for $1.

Tall, possibly late 50's version of the Geisha Room mug made by Otagiri for the Hawaiian Cottage in Merchantville (now Cherry Hill) NJ. The domed bottom makes this a devil to clean out the years of accumulated gunk...

I picked up this Otagiri Moai today. It is very similar to the Mark Thomas Outrigger (if not exact) except it has no restaurant name on it. Also instead of an OMC label it is stamped on the bottom in black ink IMPORT BY OTAGIRI CO. Has anyone seen this mug before?

Hello all-it's been awhile-still collecting and finding some cool things.

This one is puzzling to say the least-I bought some vintage paper placemats and this one was with them.

I cannot find anything anywhere about the Hotel Claremont in Oakland/Berkeley California pertaining to anything Tiki at all?

Nice catch there OGR-someone else mentioned to me evidence they had Luaus there, so that makes sense. Wonder if they just served Luau food or if they had decorations and maybe even a show-now I will have to look through my matchbooks to see if I missed this one somehow-Thanks!

PTD, Also found this....The Terrace Lounge, although I suspect this is earlier than the Luau time period...this was 1950. OGR
