I found this little Hawaiian guy in a local charity shop yesterday, sitting all alone on a shelf, waiting to be rescued, with an NZ$1 price tag stuck to him:

He has new friends now and is going to be my bar-top mascot:

But first he needed a tiki makeover, so I got out the paint and timber stain:

He is looking much more cheerful now.

Well, no... Johnny Pineapple doesn't suck. I like his music. Perhaps a small child got a hold of the black marker and attempted to to a little coloring while listening to the island music coming from her dad's phonograph. Well, you never know.

That's good to know. It must have been a harsh critic they also marked out the 25 hits and changed it to 15, some people are hard to please!

Are you kidding me? Johnny Pineapple RULED! lol. My grandpa had that record when I was a kid (I have it now) and I used to ask him to play it all the time. My favorite track was "Pretty Mermaid Of The Southern Sea"...the steel guitar rocks on that one..:)

This has to of been our biggest tiki score at a thrift store ever. And it was all 1/2 off ($14). We are totally amused that the bucket mug is stamped with Andersen Pea Soup. I can think of nothing more gross then a mai tai and a bowl of pea soup together. Maybe they served the pea soup in the mug? Any know if Andersens had a tiki phase?

The mug with the earrings is from The Lania in San Mateo, which is neat since I don't think I have anything from there.

This has probably blown the tiki karma for the year.

Finally, the gods smile on me,

Tiki matches after sifting through 2 full coffee cans of matchbooks.

A pineapple mug, Islander Kon Tiki mug, Kona Hawaii 3 face mug and one from Reef Resort Inn & Casino.

A carved pole found at one of those over 55 senior neighborhoods, the owner said it was from Las Vegas and the sticker says "Good luck or Fishing Tiki". I like the choice but I'm not sure which one I want it to be. Nice fishhook detail.

I found a Hawaiian Gardens surfer girl mug yesterday at Goodwill and that prompted me to look on Flickr for more info. Here is a great architect rendering of the place with some great history!

I found the mask below last weekend. I was told by the antique shop owner that it is from Papua New Guinea, and it looks like it is from West Papua (Irian Jaya), although some expert out there may be able to offer more info.

I hung it up in-between a couple of old cruise line posters. The Orient Line was a British steamship company that sailed cruises around Melanesia from Sydney in the mid-20th century. It was taken over by P&O in the 1960s, as I recall:

And I came across this rather brutal looking weapon, also from PNG:

It is going up above the entrance to the bar/kitchen.

I found 4 of the 3 faced mugs at an estate sale here in San Jose last weekend... I was even more floored to find out that the Hawaiian Gardens restaurant was in walking distance from my house!!!! I've become obsessed with this place and need to find more goodies...

I found this today at an estate sale. Does anyone have any info on it? 18" tall. The Tiki Farm mug is for size reference. Holds maybe a gallon.


Just found out that its made from Monkey Wood or Monkey Pod Wood.

Got a case of severed head mugs today. I made the old lady mix me a Mai Tai with her last bottle of 17 year old J. Wray and Nephew for taking them away. One has slight crazing so I don't know why I even hauled them home. Not worth the effort for what will end up as my new doorstop. Whatever.

Found a few things today at the flea market
An unmarked Polynesian girl bust

A Moai marked "Bruce 1969" on the rear and apparently used as an ashtray or incense burner

A brass bottle opener

And my favorite find of today, A Jan. 1955 Life magazine with lots of Tahitian photos.

These photos are 10 X 14 inches and will soon get framed for my bar.

And these 2 are 5 X 7 inches

No actual tikis at the recent antiques show at the MN state fairgrounds but I did pick up these 2 Gil Elvgren prints. The story was that they (along with over a hundred others) came out of a hotel in St. Louis that closed down. Apparently the owner cut them out of magazines and calendars and used them to decorate the mens rooms. Not sure if that's true but I like that they look age appropriate and the price was certainly right. I think I'll find a more distinguished place to hag them rather then the bathroom.

I found this book in Melbourne (Australia) on Monday:

It is a volume in the "World in Pictures" series, from 1882:

It is profusely illustrated with a range of amazing old engravings and it covers New Zealand (in depth), New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, Fiji, Tahiti, the Marquesas and Sandwich Islands, as well as Easter Island:

Reproductions of various of these illustrations will hopefully be gracing my walls in the near future...

Great finds everyone! I bought this lamp yesterday for $14. The cone top is ribbed plastic, the feet are wood. It fits my office nicely I think.

Got this a while ago, has straw skirt as well but that is kinda slimey from the 50's fire retardant used on it, hope you like it.

I bought this 2 seater settee for $20 off CL. Works for my new place and just needs a few lashings replaced. Now on the lookout for some barkcloth to cover this and my $15 pretzel chair. Will look cute in my tiki nook :)

The person selling had a buyer who flaked yesterday so I lucked out. I figure for the price of $35 for the mini couch and pretzel chair combined I can now afford to invest in some nice barkcloth to cover them in. Plus the pair are the perfect size for my new apartment . Love me some CL deals!

It's been real slow around here in the "finds" department so this is a roundup of the past few weeks. Not much to look at but fun stuff anyway. First are port and starboard candle lanterns to hang from the bulkhead over the bar. Kinda beat up but they look all the better from the neglect.

A powder blue Tepco scorpion bowl.

And a couple of great vintage dresses from Hawaii that my wife found the one on the left is from the Reef Towers Outrigger Hotel. Here's a close up to show the pattern.

The long dry spell just got a little moist. Found an OOH R-70 mug and a 1967 dated Schirman piece with the tag.

And I lugged this home also. Witco Wahine chair, My best score in awhile. Needs a little TLC and a cushion.

Nice find on the chair Trav...look at Hormby's Restor-a-finish, I may try that on my second chair and it worked well on the tiki stool I bought last week.

I went to Reno on Friday to visit my Brother. On the way up, I was able to find a couple of things. A tourist statue and four tiki shot glasses at one thrift store:

I had time to stop at the Tonga room in downtown San Francisco and have a cocktail from this mug on your right,Went to Trader Dick's and had a couple of cocktails from these mugs:

My best mug find in a while, these two trader vic's logo mug, Tiki Farm 2002, I gotta find the green one now.

I checked craigslist prior to leaving for Reno and found this bar listed for sale. It's weather beaten but I will bring it back to life next week.
