Lexington Kentucky Rocks!

I found a duplicates of almost all the mugs posted and I found twenty all together. I only posted one and the singles, but what a great haul! All twenty and a Tapa cloth Hawaiian shirt for $40.

Psycho D, they had birdhead clubs at the Santa Ana Bower's museum PNG exhibit. I'm pretty sure I have a pic of the exhibit card but I'm out of town, I'll send you that info later.

So I went to an estate sale today and found all these things there. I arrived about an hour after the sale started and to my chagrin the was an entire set of rattan 60's furniture that had been sold. Lots of cool Mid Century items and I also missed out on the tiki mugs that were out for sale, no telling what they were.

The mother had a kiln and a huge variety of Duncan molds. The kiln had been sold, but I asked about the molds, ergo the greenware I purchased. The son was selling all of his mom and dad's stuff off. After digging around for awhile, he was unable to locate the molds, but is going to continue looking for me

The dad was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII, so that is where the club came from, according to the son and daugther in law, they mentioned New Calendonia, but I wasn't sure, so thanks for the confirmation!

All in all, the purchase was a whopping $17.00 (the club with the picture taped to it was $7.00). Not all of them are this low, but it evens out in the end!

Wow PTD, you are the king of field collecting! You make me feel like the old days of urban beachcombing are still here!
And just to clarify, in an earlier post somewhere I was referring to "collectors" meaning people that could collect whatever, buying any new mug however boring and un-original it is, and not really knowing or caring about the context and origin of Tiki culture. You, Sir, in contrast are a true urban archeologist!

What gets me sometimes is that folks sell their parents' keepsakes, like this club.
And what a coincidence that Blacklagoon had one of those Duncan stackers in his lot right after your find. I wish you good luck on those molds surfacing!

(NOTE - I posted the wrong card! The correct info is a couple of posts down :blush: )

The exhibit card read: "War Clubs were very common on the islands that made up Melanesia including Vanatu and Papua New Guinea. Primarily used in combat during tribal conflicts, the use of heavy wood and often stone attached to the end made these clubs highly effective. The war clubs were sometimes used in an agricultural role. And in additions symbolic war clubs were sometimes created for the sole purpose of being placed beside a deceased warrior as they prepared for the journey into the underworld."

The card did not specifically mention the bird head shape but all the clubs on display were of that design.

Here's the real one: "Ceremonial Clubs (Go Porowa Ra Maru) 19th - 20th Century New Caledonia, Melanesia These clubs are shaped in the form of the head of a stylized bird. Used by chiefs, these clubs were the symbols of prestige, rank and wealth that were sometimes ritually exchanged. Because the clubs terminate in a fragile point it is most likely that they were used ceremonially, as objects of display, rather than in war"

Sven was right, of course, about them being used by the Kanak people. Here is a link that suggest they may actually be in the shape of a turtle head instead of a bird

:o Not sure if this one actually counts, but I did find in sitting in the drive way when I arrived home on Saturday after going yard sailing!

My husband had our friend Mark Brandhofer carve it as a surprise for me. I love it.

And now it's sitting in its new location outside Paka's Tiki Lounge!

Mark needs to get on TC and show his carving capibilities also.. And at the same time learn all the trick of the trade talking to all the great carvers here. He's done some really great tiki's and had a booth at Ohana this year. So if you're in the tristate area and looking for a carver, check him out on facebook.. His motto is "let's talk". :)

Want to thank everyone for the kind words regarding the Pink Tahitian lamp and especially Big Bro for, as usual, digging up the brilliant and bizarre Tropicana Lanes connection. Where would we be without you Sven... A couple more odds and ends which I keep forgetting to post. I know you guys like what your used to, but this new artist is really up and coming so please support him, I've bought a few pieces and they are just amazing brilliant, and never have seen another artist who does this type of art. I'm trying to help him, but I know he will be doing a lot of shows in California promoting his work. And I know he will be amazing!!!

Tiki Ti 35th Anniversary patch.

I assume it was intended for the back of a jacket, like I've seen other Tiki Ti patches. Measures about 11" x 11" and is in mint, unused condition. Found it in a big pile of patches at the Long Beach Swap Meet for $1.00.

Back to the classic logo Tiki design, a patch on a black, durable Dickies jacket. This will outlive me! (especially if I keep it up drinking four potions in one sitting, like I did last night :) )

Wow! Those must be the "mintiest" fern wood Tikis I have ever laid eyes on! Keep that dog away from them. And yes, keep'em inside - best in climate controlled glass display cases! And no flash photography! :D

Thanks Grog - I have them inside now... they are definitely fragile... they lose fibers even when you gingerly handle them... I guess that's why we don't see too many of these around anymore. They look to be completely in-tact, so the previous owner must have taken care.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but the one on the left is anatomically correct... heheh

According to a "Old Timey Lake Tahoe" co-worker of mine Harvey's Inn was also owned by Harvey Gross like Harvey's Wagon Wheel Hotel and Casino. It's now the Lakeside Inn.

Are those OMC mugs?

Nice find on the tikis, they look to be in amazing condition. Nice to get a trio like that as well.

I especially like your velvet painting, I seem to remember having a postcard around similar to the artwork in the painting.

Could you take a couple of shots (full on and one with the signature) and post it over in the velvet thread?

Picked up this at a local shop. It's about 18" tall and from the seventies and it's a chalkware piece.. Still nice! :)
