The size is 44L (it's 30" long and 44" around) I figure it would be great for someone here to wear to the Hukilau. I'd bring it with me, but I can't go this year so I'll probably sell it for cash towards a plane ticket for next year's event.

I LOVED that coat. Went with any color or style of Hawaiian shirt underneath. If I wanted to really be classy, a clashing Hawaiian print tie was nice. Wished they made tuxes for my prom.
Wore it all the time until my mom washed it in hot water...
Outside shrunk, inner lining stayed same size. Looked like it had some kind of prolapse on the sleeves like my arms tore the insides out. Very creepy.
I wept.
Sometimes I still weep.

I was enthused to see a 1961 copyright date.

I've stopped going to garage sales for a few weeks (months?) until I sell all my back-stock in my office on eBay. Nonetheless, I couldn't help myself from stopping at this little rinky-dink swapmeet in my neighborhood yesterday as I was out running errands.

I had three dollars in my wallet at the time and immediately found a signed "3 Suns" lp and a signed "Ray Conniff" lp for $1.50 apiece. That wiped out my cash. "Just watch," I told myself. "I'm gonna find a tiki mug now and not be able to afford it". As if on cue, I immediately spotted this fine fellow on a table of junk:

"You've got to be kidding." I muttered, knowing exactly what was written on the bottom of this distinctive mug. I've wanted one of these for a long time. I asked the seller her price. She said a dollar. I fished out all the spare change in my pocket. "How 'bout 79 cents?" I asked. "It's all I've got at the moment". She reluctantly said, "OK" and bagged my new mug up for me. He is in mint condition, by the way.

Great find Sabu! You are now part of the club...I only know of a few people that have the Kono Hawaii signature mug. I was lucky enough to get a set of six for $5 years ago, but I'm still envious of the find!

The prized tiki tissue dispenser, with tissue coming out of his nose (I had to get green kleenix, natch).
Some odd wooden carving. Not sure if it is really Tiki or not. It is only marked with the number 151 on the bottom (a secret clue to some kind of high power rum?)

awesome finds! I hate my thrift shops here! I never find anything. I think there's someone here buying up all the tiki mugs. I've even taken to going into Santa Ana. That's pretty dangerous for a skinny white guy in a Hawaiian shirt with a tiki tony around his neck. I went into the seediest part of Anaheim a few weeks ago and found a windproof ashtray made by Daga for $1.00. Not bad except I quit smoking. Dooohhhhh!

I look pretty much every single weekday. In the past three years, this is the first tiki jewelery I've ever seen.(other than a coco joe necklace)

Funny I should find two sets, in the only two shops I frequent, within two weeks of each other. There must be something in the air.

There is a thrift that I to regularly. I've picked up some good stuff from time to time.

Recently, I've noticed two older guys hanging around the ceramics section. Every time an employee brings out a cart of new stuff, they raid it before the cart is even through the door. One guy has even followed an employee all the way to the front of the store, trying to pick out stuff from the cart she was pushing.

I don't know if they are looking for Tiki (antiques, most likely), but it is really annoying. They don't give anybody else a chance, and the employees won't tell them to wait until the stuff is on the shelf. I saw them there today and overheard them saying there were there for two hours, looking for stuff. I guess it beats working!

Found a few cool things:
A bamboo bar front and top (front is 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 feet, top is 2 x 5 1/2 feet). Missing many parts, they don't fit directly together, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll be making the outside bar from these...

Score! An unopened decanter of Ti-Toki liqueur! I know its more collectible sealed but I may have to imbibe in some of the Ti-Toki.

Today was a very good day, especially by Maine standards.

First, I got this bamboo display shelf at a yard sale for $1. It even has leather straps to add extra strength to it.

And two of the items on it I found at a Salvation Army and combined were $2.

There are no markings but it looks like Westwood. Anybody know anything of this??? Looked everywhere for another one but.... nothing. The lady at the garage sale asked if I found the cups that go with it. After looking at all the boxes and stuff again, I didn't of course. Uggh. Why do they dangle that carrot in front of your face. Maybe it's in that box of Tiki Mugs "that's around here somewhere."

Well, not too much lately but I did have a good day at a flea market in Vancouver today. Here are the goodies I found:

On the left is a Moai Statue made of heavy rock like material (I think it is quartz but am not sure). It's like those Aztec statues that you see but of the Easter Island style figures. ($5)

Beside that is a rare large green double faced Tiki mug that was made by Polynesian Pottery which was the company name before DAGA. ($10)

In the back middle, tall unmarked Tiki mug. You see these generic mugs with the Made in Japan stickers. ($1)

In front of that is the brown tiki mug that has "Original Kona Coffee Mill" on the back. ($2)

Nice Orchids of Hawaii R-12 small brown mug with handle. ($1)

A nice hand carved Tiki ash tray from the Monkey Pods gift shops of Hawaii. Never seen one like this before. Nicely carved and some pretty sharp teeth!! ($5)

Up front are a bunch of different stir sticks from some places like Trader Vic's, Seven Seas, and Beachcombers in Vancouver. (10 cents each!)

I haven't got this much from one place in quite a while! Happy Hunting!!!

I've gotta start looking elsewhere, the San Diego Sal Army has opened a "Boutique" where they'll send their good stuff and sell it for higher prices, and they're raising their prices on everything else, too.

I've almost never found anything good at the SD Salvation Army stores (the only exception being a tiki tissue dispenser). It seems that there are so many stores in the county, they parcel stuff out to all of the various locations, which waters down the selection. The Boutique store on Sports Arena has some nice stuff, but I've never found Tiki there... nor in the Goodwill on Rosecrans.

Independent thrifts and the antique stores along Adams Ave. seem to be a bit better.
