Was this the Skipper Kent's mug that was posted a few days ago? The one with the reserve price?

The goodness of your deal depends on if it is or is not a generic, new manufacture mug. If it is vintage and is marked with a restaurant's name (such as Skipper Kent's), then it falls into the good deal realm. If it is a new one (like a currently available Trader Dick's), then it is in the bad deal realm.

I got a new job a month ago, and I am now unable to make my daily visit to my favorite thrift store. So I've been relying on Ebay to get stuff. My finds for the past month:

Got this at a thrift store. An unmarked salt and pepper shaker set. One has a chip on it. There were a few other S&P sets, and I think they all came from the same source. Of course, only the Tiki set was chipped. Darn!

A new, Chiki Tiki mug marked 'Montauk, New York'. I think it looks more like a lizard. Came with 4 glass bamboo stir sticks.

The best of all: a Tiki Bob mug from the Bali Hai, NOLA. Got this lad for $27.00. Some minor paint loss, but no chips or cracks.

Got out of work a little early and went to the thrift stores. I had a pretty good day!

2 slightly different of almost the same mug.

& I thought this one was pretty neat as well by Orchids of Hawaii.

Tikisgrl - You're really on a roll this month! Those are some of the most sought-after mugs around. And the Spanish mug you found earlier looks like an old, vintage edition. The details are so crisp compared to the modern versions, that it looks like it was cast from an early generation of the mold.

Good finds all around this month. BBTD's Lanai fogcutters are stunning in their detail too. I bet he's gotten lots of offers to trade one already.

Here's a couple of things I found this morning at the local Salvation Army. They're only remarkable for the fact that they're the first tiki items I've found in this area, and I've been looking for 13 years!

Here's a Paul Marshall-stylee wooden mug with handle. The label on the bottom sez it's from The Monkeypod Tree Shops, Honolulu. It's not quite as nice as the one I found in Colorado last year, but hey, it only cost $1!


Mrs. Bali Hai always wanted a set of these for the kitchen. They have little tikis carved on the handles and are from the Phillipines. Price: $5

A weekend of thrifting all along the east coast of Florida have turned up:

Mr Bali-Hai actually came from an antique store in Daytona, but I still got him for less that $40! And, he has his lid/head!

True true! Arte 4 does not exist anymore, the company that makes my Kon-Id line took over their molds. I decided not to have any made of those particular ones, because they are to run down and globby now. I have an unpainted, white sample where the detail is better because of less glaze, but without color it's just not the same.

Yup, The doll house was a strip club in Waikiki circa 1970... Pretty common cainraiser, by Daga. I got one for $2 bucks.

I found a pretty nice copy of Aku Aku at a used bookstore on Wednesday. No dust jacket, but hardback with the moai design in the front cover. Looks like a bookclub edition from the 50's or 60's, can't tell cause it only has the copyright date and no edition information, but it was only $8. Aside from the missing jacket, the book's in otherwise good shape. There's something else I can cross off the list!

Found a good one this weekend, I wish it were in better shape.

It's got a pretty big long crack!

And this one is pretty odd anyone have any ideas?

It looks like the center of a Volcano bowl but it's just the volcano part and it is pretty solid.

Indeed, what you have there is a volcano insert to turn any bowl into a volcano bowl. Here's the entry in Ooga-Mooga:

You can see one in Tiki Quest on page 80. In November, one sold on eBay for $102.50!

wow, tikisgrl, fantastic finds. I was thinking exactly what Humu2 posted before I scrolled down that far. awesome awesome stuff! Personally, I'd rather have a mug with a crack than no mug at all.
SneakyJack, also good finds. Looks like you got some killer records there, and a nice vintage Kon-Tiki complete with dust jacket! If you look on the lower right hand side of the back cover (near the spine) check for a small depression in the cover, maybe about the size of a large pin head, maybe a little bigger. Books with this dot in the cover were produced for a book club. The copy of KonTiki I found a while back was a book club edition. I don't know if there's any other ways to determine a first edition.

I looked for the dot on the KON TIKI - didn't see anything but In the cover / dust jacket front flap there is a line that reads "book club edition". So I guess if the cover and the book have lived togther always then thats another way to find out - or not???

Interesting. The copy of Aku Aku I just got didn't have a dust jacket, but did have the infamous book club dot. Perhaps my information source has some things wrong. I'm going to have to look into this.

I've been looking for the Bartender's Guide by Trader Vic for a while (particularly the 1948 reprint edition) and even bid unsuccessfully on Ebay. I found a copy at an online used bookstore and it was a real score!!!

Autographed by Trader Vic himself!

1500 drink recipes, notably, not including the Mai Tai! I'm guessing it wasn't invented yet?
(I can't imagine a world without the Mai Tai!)

I found this today...thought I'd throw in the environment in which it was found, a classic rural junk place.

The piece itself is wood, with the surface selectively gouged and painted to make the design.

Here are my finds from the antique fair last weekend.

The aforementioned Hedi Schloop Hula Girl. I think she is great. :)I love that she has nail polish.

She is around 11 1/2" tall and dates between 1945-1955

Matchbooks

Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Luau, Kona Inn (2), Coral Reef (2), Half Moon Inn (2), Trader Vics (Portland), Mark Thomas Outrigger, Bali Hai (2), Kona Inn (2), Coco Palms.

Poster card from the 40s (so the dealer claims) around 2ft wide.

Wood Tiki (Not sure of its origin, around 16" tall)

Tiki Bob Mug (not pictured, you know what they look like...) The one with the Lei on the back...marked Tiki Bob's San Francisco

Found a black moai mug yesterday at an antique store, kind of like the OMC design, but with no sticker, no marking on the back, just all black. Is he a real OMC moai or what? Is there a way to tell them apart, aside from the sticker?

TJ, I have a black unmarked moai like that, no sticker or any markings whatsoever. I believe he's black on his concave bottom.

yep, concave on the black bottom. Pretty weird. The glazed surface is sort of rough, like a really fine sandpaper, not glossy smooth like most other tiki mugs. The bottom rim is also unglazed ceramic.

Here is what i've gotten over the past few weeks (and a x-mas present i left out)

From L-R:
Witco-looking cigarette lighter (x-mas present), Cheezy-tiki candle, a "totem bird" mug, and a parrot mug from Dynasty Wholesale, I think.

You can see behind it a plastic mug (brown) and two Dizknee goblets (small version). If anyone is interested in one or both, I'm willing to part with them. I bought 4 that day.

Went to the big flea market today:

Coco Joe lighter (needs new lighter part but I'm told they're easy to find). Amber two faced glass mug. Newer Trader V's S&P (the mold is getting worn). Carving that looks like a Raratongan Tangaroa but without the buto. Trader Dick's mug.

I couldn't resist this young wahine even though she's obviously had a hard knock life.

Tangaroa wishes he had a buto I think.

Obviously I'm going to have to do a lot of work on the paint. Anyone have any suggestions on what type of paint to use? One guy I showed it to suggested Testors model paint. Anything better? I think she's gonna dress up real nice.

Here's an interesting plate my friend got:

Cape Coral Gardens - Aloha Lagoon - Cape Coral Florida.

Tiki Torch. I know it's a bad pic and, frankly, its hard to see in real life, but the Tiki Torch looks like a birdhouse sans entrance with a maori carving in it's place. Could be my imagination though.

Tiki Hut. Looks more like an Everglades chickee(?) hut than it does Polynesian. Benzart knows what I'm talking about.

Also featuring "Waltzing Waters," "Garden of Patriots," "Porpoise Pool" and "Iwo Jima Memorial." My guess is that the place had minimal, if any, true tiki (maybe the torch) and was just throwing a Hawaiian gloss on an otherwise South Florida style tourist attraction.

Cool plate. On I-4 between Orlando and Lakeland, there is a roadside Iwo Jima memorial. I wonder if it was orginally in Cape Coral?
