Always a quandry when it comes to buying mugs I have multiples (and I mean multiples of)! Today was pretty much dollar day and I found it extremely difficult to pass up any of these items. I call most of these "starter" mugs, as in what most people find at first when they start their mug collections...
Interesting enough, this is actually a spiral binder travel brochure from Hawaiian Airlines.
Total spent today-$34.50. Thanks for looking and happy hunting! PTD [ Edited by: Psycho Tiki D 2008-10-05 17:05 ] |

I too have a Harvey's, Lake Tahoe mug; can someone tell me: What's the history of this place and how is it they do mugs? They are not listed as a tiki place on critiki. I checked their website and it didn't look like they have a tropical bar. So how do they/did they have tiki mugs? |

Here's this week's stuff: This is an interesting guy. I haven't done exhaustive research on it yet, but I'd guess PNG. It's about two feet tall. A plaster copy of the CCJ's bookend/Pied piper/Randotti war god I never picked this up in my Pink Floyd or HST phase, so I got it now while I'm in my tiki phase. This book isn't as exciting as the title would have you believe: In the weird catagory, a Benadryl Maori back scratcher
And finally, a non tiki treasure craft whale set: Buzzy Out! [ Edited by: Bay Park Buzzy 2008-10-06 23:12 ] |

Buzzy, that is definitely a Maori tourist item, what a great cross-cultural piece! Maybe there was some kind of pharmaceutical convention in N.Z. and Benadryl had these made as mementos? Not the greatest carving indeed, but it's based on existing Maori carvings. High weirdness value, for sure! [ Edited by: bigbrotiki 2008-10-09 09:34 ] |

Nice find Tikiville. These ashtrays are common. They were sold as tourist items in a number of places. Many different glazes, styles and markings. I keep vintage matchbooks in mine. |

I found these amongst a hundred or so other swizzle sticks. $2 for 2 cuploads of swizzles. I am miffed about the Disneyland "Tiki Garden"...Were they referring to the Tahitian Terrace, OR do these swizzles predate the official naming of the Enchanted Tiki Room. I'm sure these swizzles were a promotion used on United Airlines since they were the first sponsors of the show, right? |

No reason to be miffed, Tom! Not only was United Airlines the traditional sponsor of the Tiki Room: ...these swizzles were used at the pineapple juice booth which stood... where? In the Enchanted TIKI GARDEN in front of the Tiki Room: "Where Fantasy and Legend walk Hand in Hand with Tiki Talk"!!! But it is actually the Tiki Garden that has provided all the Polynesian pop mythology and the more interesting Tiki art to us Tikiphiles, with Tangaroa the Talking Tree above, and various deities like Koro: Hina, the Rain Goddess: ...and Ngendei, the Earth-shaker (here the original sculpt, right side up): Not to forget Pele! Why, we would have never had as many wonderful collectibles without the Tiki Garden Tikis! It is of course regrettable that this swizzle depicts that relatively generic, often used swizzle stick Tiki --but here at TC we know that that Tiki stems from the Kona Kai Marriott logo Tiki, which ultimately is based on the Trader Vic/De Young Museum Maori Tiki, and so all is well, after all... Right!? :) |

My only real "in the wild" find from 2 weeks in Australia, and believe me I was looking hard - I hit plenty of op-shops, markets and a few garage sales too. I did see plenty of mediocre and overpriced PNG stuff but little else. |

Freddie, thanks - it sure looks like it was made by the same artist to me. Most of this stuff went overseas so it's not as common here as I'd like. I thought I'd see more of it in OZ but had no luck other than these little guys. |
