Has anyone seen these painted matte black before?

The rest of this stuff is all from one A.J. Kane, seaman on the USS William P. Biddle, from his stay in Honolulu, March 28 & 29, 1941. First up is a nice souvenir photo of him with a fine wahine.:

Next, a menu from the Sea View Inn "On The Beach At Haleiwa". On the back it is autographed by some of his shipmates. Seaman Kane's words on the front; "Stopped here on trip around the island. March 28,1941." The menu choices included: a sardine sandwich for $.10, a T-Bone steak for $.60 & the most expensive item on the menu, an extra large order of fried frog's legs for $1.00!



Next up, a "Pilot's License" from the Royal Annex in Honolulu. It proclaims Seaman Kane has fully qualified as a First Class Pilot on the seas of Beverages & states: "He who does not love Wine, Women and Song, remains a fool, his whole life long."

Finally, a pic of Seaman Kane's dad proudly displaying the 8-point buck he shot.

I love these little bits of history from our Greatest Generation. I did a bit of research on the ship. It was a transport ship, used throughout WWII & received 7 Battle Stars for service in combat areas.

I have a couple of those in the unglazed version. I don't know their origin but that's a samurai on the front. I know that because on the back is a Japanese Kanji that means 'samurai'.

Great find Keith! Craigslist really is a great place to find tiki treasures sometimes. Did you get it for a decent price? It's hard to tell from the pic if it's older or newer?

Great find! It is newer, came from Tikimaster in Hawaii. That size retails now for about $800.

I think I got a good price. I did see the exact same carving on the TikiMaster site for $790 + shipping (estimated at another $100). This one was just down the highway. I got it for just over half the retail price and didn't have to pay shipping. This bad boy is heavy.

I also got 4 really neat lamps. I'll have to see how many I need for my garage build. I still have to get pics of these but my phone pics didn't turn out well at all.

Last weekend we picked up some barstools and a peacock chair.

I can't wait to get started on my build - I got a lot of great ideas at Tiki Kon.

I'm having so much fun! :)

Spent a little over $5 in 2 stores and got this stuff.

Smaller glass 2 face goblet, Trader Vic's coconut, handled mug is not vintage :

The cold paint on the Nugget and Sneaky Tiki are in bad shape but I believe in "NO tiki left behind" :)

I always buy these name mugs from Hawaii when I find them and then regift them to people in gift baskets.

In my sculpture class we are currently working on found art sculptures. When I entered the studio today the first thing I noticed sitting amongst a pile of junk was a M.H. Strikow decanter. I then realized It was sitting in someones material pile about to be sacrificed for "art" I rushed over to the guy who's table it was at and informed him on what he had. I told him I would buy it off of him. He said if he didn't use it for his project he would "think about it" All during class I was on edge, I couldn't stop staring at it. I felt horrible thinking that I might witness such a prime artifact of mid century poly pop be destroyed in my midst. At the end of class as he was packing up I told him to think my offer over, and he told me to just take it home. I must have some good karma!

I found these 2 relief carved wood fish today that measure appx 2 foot by 1 foot in size. I know they aren't "tiki" but they fit the tropical vibe anyways.

I just have to find a place to hang them.

Also for fun I picked up this bag o' menehuenes for $0.79. After seeing them all hanging there just like that I knew that they needed to be rescued. I think I will leave them in the bag though..lol.

I've never seen a white haired Menehune before, I wonder if that's a Christmas special.

I remember my mom painting EVERY thing that was old in our house gold!
That old peacock wall hanging, BAM! now new and so chic with only a can
of gold spray paint.
This would have been the early 70s.

I remember Bill Sapp telling me that the ceiling of tha Kahiki had this
fiberglass tile of sorts that was first painted Kahiki brown then
gold paint was litely rolled over the top of that.
He said it was kinda sparkly. Like stars above.

Haha, yup, it was that late 60s, early 70s Hollywood Regency/ Las Vegas/ Palm Springs interior decorator -thing.

It has Tahitian details on the hands, arms and nose. the rest is unrecognizable to me. It looks like the same wood type as a piece I got a while ago from Vanuatu. I've seen other kinds of weird semi tiki looking examples on ebay from there. The face and eyes looks almost eskimo crossed with Cook islands, but it was found in a lot with some other south Pacific stuff. Crazy looking piece, wherever it's from.

I was pretty floored by that early date for those tikis as well. Then I did a little research and found out that the California Spring Garden Show was held in Oakland, CA each year, and that seems to fit nicely. Oakland was under the influence of the some of the earliest places to first use tikis as decor - Trader Vic's of course, and then Skipper Kent's up in San Francisco too.

In fact, when I look at your postcard, Kate, I suspect a connection with Skipper Kent's. That Moai looks suspiciously like the signature Moai used for the Skipper Kent's mugs and salt shakers. And that other tiki makes an appearance in this early Skipper Kent's postcard:

My Skipper Kent's postcard with the tiki above is postmarked 1953, so the photo was probably taken earlier than that. I'm wondering if Skipper Kent purchased or copied the tikis from the Garden Show, or perhaps he did the decorating for that exhibit at the Garden Show, using his own tikis and plants? After all, Skipper Kent was a horticulturist himself. The rare tropical plants and flowers in his restaurants were "imported from the four corners of the earth and are now grown by the Skipper in his hot houses in Walnut Creek, Ca", according to the back of one of his drink menus. He also collected native carvings and weapons during his travels around the world, which he then used in his restaurant. So the tikis might be his? just conjecture.

Anyway, that's a damn impressive haul of tiki paper for one weekend!

In fact, when I look at your postcard, Kate, I suspect a connection with Skipper Kent's. That Moai looks suspiciously like the signature Moai used for the Skipper Kent's mugs and salt shakers. And that other tiki makes an appearance in this early Skipper Kent's postcard.

So the tikis might be his? just conjecture.

The other Tiki in the postcard also looks just like the one in front of Skipper Kents.

I actually picked up two different Rigger menus. It was in Hawaii.

The postcard below the Kapu Kai is Marineland. I couldn't resist the entrance sign with the fish. I'll post it in the Marineland thread tonight.

Mid-century mask in solid wood. The reverse side of the mask has minute splashes of different colored enamel paint, probably from years of hanging on a wall at some unknown location. Note the mask in the company of Halloween decor just hitting the shelves that afternoon.

Humble finds I know..but in my neighborhood its shocking to find anything tiki

That's a Fitz and Floyd bowl/vase. I have no knowledge of it ever being used in any way at a tiki establishment or restaurant. It has some similarities to the Trader Vic Nautilus, the notable difference being the base.

And this poor X eyes had someone "decorate" him...but I couldn't let him stay by himself.
