Talk about blowing us away right outta the gate! Those doors are amazing!

OGR

Awesome find Gary and welcome.

8T

Welcome and CONGRATS! Gary. That's an amazing find for you and thanks for sharing. It reminds us all that cool things are still out there waiting to be rediscovered. Hopefully you can find out from local research if indeed these came from the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Nicollet there in Minneapolis. Post some pictures when you get them installed. Keep us posted on your research.

Gary - congratulations on those doors. They're carved so well, that they sure do look like they came from a important restaurant. Other than the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Nicollet, the other options I suppose might be the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Leamington or Don The Beachcomber's in St. Paul. In fact, looking at a 1953 issue of Billboard magazine, it says that Don the Beachcomber was also the creator of the Waikiki Room at the Nicollet.

Doctor Z and I didn't expect to find much on Saturday with the steady rain, but we went to 4 or 5 indoor estate sales and every one had some tiki. Here's a combined photo of our finds. After taking this photo and getting the items stowed out of the rain, we went to anther sale and Doctor Z found a few more fish floats and a small moai carved out of marble. Good day overall.

The weathered Milan Guanko tiki was only $10 ("You should have been here yesterday. We sold a bunch of other tikis, including a big lava-rock one"). I think Doctor Z paid $5 for the Coco Joe's plaque. The fish floats are all old antiques and very heavy ("You should have been here yesterday. We had some of the square glass fish-floats then.") The Tretchikoff "Miss Wong" matches the "Green Lady" I own in size and frame-style.

Keep an eye open at the Rose Bowl and Pasadena swapmeets, in case those other tikis we missed show up there.

Those doors are pretty cool.
Maybe it's all the pills I took earlier, but for some reason when I look at them...

I'm pretty sure it's from a company called The Tonga Trading Co., Ltd.
It would have come with a set of tags like this(pictures from a piece I have with all the tags from the same company):

The English booklet has the name and history behind the original piece that the reproduction is based on.

Inside it also has a serial number for the piece as well as a stamped impression with the date of production on it(Dec 29, 1971, on this one)

The serial matches the stamped number impressed on the piece

The "4" on your piece and this one are the same

They were souvineer reproduction pieces made to scale from original Hawaiian carvings. Here's the whole piece that I have, which the book informs me is in quarter scale

And the original it was based on:

Here's the original of your piece, the pig head Ku:

Nicely carved Ku wooden tiki. Has a marked on the back of 043. Does anyone know who may have carved this?

Looks like a replica tiki that was sold at the Bishop Museum gift shop a few years ago...The ones I've seen there were numbered and came with a tag with the carvers signiture... Either a Tongan or Samoan name... It might have come from this company...

Aloha, Freddie

Thanks Buzzy and Freddie! I knew someone would come through!

I've joined the hibachi club. This guy's got more of a Mayan style than tiki.

And in this corner... a set of four from The Polynesia.

Killer finds Bongo. Love the bucket mugs.

An 8" tall Coco Joes (#274) and a 5" tall Treasure Craft ashtray which has been broken and reglued. It's an old repair. I normally wouldn't buy a broken item like this but it didn't cost much and I didn't have one so until I find a better one it will do. It has 3 holes in the top for the smoke to escape and the hole for the ashes is in the back.

Found this pair from the Kona Coffee Mill. They are plastic. I can't tell if these are old or current.

L

Bongo I rather enjoy your 1 item posts :)

I can't handle more than one thought at a time... just a typical guy.

Me, too, but that one thought is not usually Tiki! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!

It's been slim pickin's here in Denver since Halloween...

Over Turkey Day Tiki Tammy went upstate to visit her folks and found me a bigger version of a Jeckell&Hyde mug I found a while back (on the right) its from Capt. John's Sylvan Beach NY.

Today I found this, it looks like a door off something.

close up

and a bowl it's got a small crack but.....

BBScott, that door is interesting... how big is it?

T

A rare Stephen Crane Mug that I found today...Mint Condtion....

nice score!

T

Thanks tikithomas08.....Found the very rare "Tiki Gardens LP" album today....

Aaah, Ernie Shreeves on the mighty Wurlitzer Organ...You are on a lucky Tiki streak there, Tim!

For Tiki TC: The door pulls on your door find...

...are from Oceanic Arts:

Cannot place the Ku Tiki design, the minimalist reduction of the chest and limbs seems familiar ...but then that was done on other graphic depictions of Tikis, too.

Some new stuff:

Nice sized Maori carving (16" x 7")

Polynesian polynesian or Asian Polynesian?

A handled westwood mug:

A couple more Kona coffee mill mugs:

Tikishaker gave me the next three:

Cocojoe's to replace the Coco Joes I broke when I took pictures of all my Co co Joe's

treasure Craft Menehune pineapple serving bowl:

Tikifarm shot glass:

Thanks TS!

Buzzy Out!

Buzzy, you could have had so much more!

If you have any regrets, go to the DAV. It's all there waiting for you.

I just bought a box of wooden cups and two mugs from a lady for $10 - looked like stuff left over from a garage sale (still had the little price stickers on each piece). Anyway one of the mugs was a "Small Four Face Tiki Bowl" by Orchids of Hawaii. When I got it home, I realized it had never been used to drink out of because the original retail sticker was still on the inside. The sticker is from Tiki Gardens, dated 3/68, (the original price was a whopping $1.29). Needless to say this one is going up on a shelf, and not used for the bar! I'll try to post pics later this week. The other mug was an Orchids R-74...now I just have to figure out what to do with the wooden cups.

From a very slow weekend last week...

Small carved wood tiki.

Nicer hobbyist Polynesian girl ceramic bust.

Finally found another one that has eluded me...Stockton Islander slim 3-faced bucket mug.

Later,

PTD

A fun find at Goodwill is this Tahitian A frame hut, it opens up to cleverly disguised music box that doesn't work, too bad I'd love to hear what would fit here, hopefully not Music Box Dancer. It may not be a TC Ohana Mug but it will do.

Here are the pics of the four face small bowl I picked-up on Monday that was originally bought at Tiki Gardens:

In the same box was this mug:

Pretty good score for $10

Haven't posted my finds lately, foudn a few things...

A couple of Mt Fuji Inn mugs, a pair of Coco Joes hapawood tiki bookends (one shown), a huge ceramic multi-colored tiki, a dark blue frankoma T-7 coconut mug, a Trader Vics USA coconut mug, a mixed hapawood/lava Coco Joes ashtray, Westwood mug, dynast Ku mug and a personalized Tapa "Bob" mug.

Got a few minutes while Mrs. SilverLine is making Christmas cookies to post a couple of my favorite recent finds.

Two-foot-tall concrete moai, a little bunged up but couldn't pass him up.

And a fairly nice repro Maori war club. Cant tell if it's actually carved or cast, but nicely done either way.

Merry Christmas everybody!

L

Instead of heading to the mall I went to the thrifts for their day after Christmas deals...meaning all the stores were 1/2 off everything.

I managed to pick up these 3 Harvey's and a Trader Dick's for just a few dollars. Nothing exciting but nice to see them all together.

That is the same design that O.A. used for their classic Maori club, a Tiki temple staple they still manufacture to this day.

Close, but not the same. To my mind, one of the best deals to be had at Oceanic Arts.

Reno Christmas finds...

From my buddy Kevin; blue handled tiki mug made by Polynesian Pottery.

Large Outrigger bowl from Trader Dick's Sparks Nevada.

Larger "Crossed Arms" tiki mug, marked "Japan" on the bottom.

OMC "Flipper" mug.

Highball glass from the Reef Resort Inn and Casino.

Later,

PTD

there is no rest ....over and in between Christmas

nifty hole huh?
AND THIS ...anybody have any info on these?

seems like somethiung from a classroon

Today was a very good day indeed for hunting mugs and Ku:

L-to-R: Treasure Craft Tiki mug with jewelled eyes, OMC Fu Manchu, OMC Pointed Headdress, Hawaiian Tiki Shot Glass with leather thong.

L-to_R: a pair of fired-clay Ku statuettes, Hawaiian monkeywood Ku, Coco Joe's Ku, Trader Vic's S&P shakers.

Nice finds, Mr. BH... (and nice bar). Just yesterday I watched The Brides of Fu Manchu.

The best part was getting it relatively dirt-cheap (less than $30 for everything). The mugs were all marked as "vases", so the sellers clearly had no idea they were collectible. They all had dirt in them as well, so the previous owners had obviously used them as planters. Don't think I'm gonna make any drinks in them until they've soaked in cider vinegar for a day or so.

I just watched "Brides of Fu Manchu" a couple of weeks ago. Gotta love Christopher Lee in bad oriental makeup.

New Stuff:

A 16" Maori tiki

Empty King K Jim Beam decanter

Trio of Philipino/Hawaiian tikis

And finally, matchbooks:

I had another Hawaii Kai matchbook but traded it for a bunch of sanding boards.

Buzzy Out!

Nice finds Buzzy!

I saw a carving exactly like yours...

The asking price was $15.00. Is that a good price?

Thanks,

PTD

Not sure if these lights count as a "find" Tammy got them for me for Christmas off E'bay to put in the Bar...

A couple small Harvey's bowls I found the other day and a s/p shaker the mother in law found in upstate and sent me for Christmas.

Nice score there Buzzy....Like the 16" Maori
Here's a few items I found in Cincinnati..
Do you think this condiment holder is witco?

This 14" wood carving...

Top View..

Bottom View....

And finally,I found this in another city here in Ohio and it says "The Mainlander".It looks authentic but I'm not sure. What do you think? Sorry about poor quality image,I just had my IPhone with me that day.

I say no. Seems to me any time I've seen pieces like that with those big hobnails they've been from Spain. I think it's a sweet piece with those pineapples though.

I like this piece a lot! Very theatrical!

Haven't been out in a while... Matt & I went out today and found these. We had a good time :)

Sneaky Tiki's all in pristine condition. I usually find these washed and faded. These are primo!

Tumbler glasses, McDonalds Hawaiian and in the box

Matt loves this large wooden tiki mug! Biggest one he's seen :)

I like the Menehune salt & pepper shakers and got these dirt cheap. Never really liked them much, but these are pretty large and nice.

I think the one on the left is new, but I like it.

TikiMookie and Matt,

Looks like someone cleaned out the Antique Trove in Roseville?? Musta got some good prices with the New Year's Sale??

Nice additions Matt & Melody .
Cheers-Bill

Duane,ha! How did you know :)

Yeah, the Treasure Trove. We averaged a little over 20% off. Not bad. The place was packed, but no one was buying tiki stuff so we had our pick of the litter, not just the dregs... a nice surprise. Still looking for Don in the wild. sigh... had fun though. I know we spent way more than you do, but that's our M.O. Hope you and Amy are enjoying this last holiday weekend. Lets get together soon! Cheers until then :)

Hi Bill, hope you enjoyed your holiday in No. Cal. Nice meeting you. Hope to see you sometime in your home turf. We'll try to get to So. Cal sometime this year. We'll let you know when we are in town.
