Welcome and CONGRATS! Gary. That's an amazing find for you and thanks for sharing. It reminds us all that cool things are still out there waiting to be rediscovered. Hopefully you can find out from local research if indeed these came from the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Nicollet there in Minneapolis. Post some pictures when you get them installed. Keep us posted on your research.

Gary - congratulations on those doors. They're carved so well, that they sure do look like they came from a important restaurant. Other than the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Nicollet, the other options I suppose might be the Waikiki Room at the Hotel Leamington or Don The Beachcomber's in St. Paul. In fact, looking at a 1953 issue of Billboard magazine, it says that Don the Beachcomber was also the creator of the Waikiki Room at the Nicollet.

Doctor Z and I didn't expect to find much on Saturday with the steady rain, but we went to 4 or 5 indoor estate sales and every one had some tiki. Here's a combined photo of our finds. After taking this photo and getting the items stowed out of the rain, we went to anther sale and Doctor Z found a few more fish floats and a small moai carved out of marble. Good day overall.

The weathered Milan Guanko tiki was only $10 ("You should have been here yesterday. We sold a bunch of other tikis, including a big lava-rock one"). I think Doctor Z paid $5 for the Coco Joe's plaque. The fish floats are all old antiques and very heavy ("You should have been here yesterday. We had some of the square glass fish-floats then.") The Tretchikoff "Miss Wong" matches the "Green Lady" I own in size and frame-style.

Keep an eye open at the Rose Bowl and Pasadena swapmeets, in case those other tikis we missed show up there.

I can't stop my mind from thinking I'm seeing a tiki with Minotaur legs:

I'm pretty sure it's from a company called The Tonga Trading Co., Ltd.
It would have come with a set of tags like this(pictures from a piece I have with all the tags from the same company):

The English booklet has the name and history behind the original piece that the reproduction is based on.

Inside it also has a serial number for the piece as well as a stamped impression with the date of production on it(Dec 29, 1971, on this one)

The "4" on your piece and this one are the same

They were souvineer reproduction pieces made to scale from original Hawaiian carvings. Here's the whole piece that I have, which the book informs me is in quarter scale

Nicely carved Ku wooden tiki. Has a marked on the back of 043. Does anyone know who may have carved this?

Looks like a replica tiki that was sold at the Bishop Museum gift shop a few years ago...The ones I've seen there were numbered and came with a tag with the carvers signiture... Either a Tongan or Samoan name... It might have come from this company...

An 8" tall Coco Joes (#274) and a 5" tall Treasure Craft ashtray which has been broken and reglued. It's an old repair. I normally wouldn't buy a broken item like this but it didn't cost much and I didn't have one so until I find a better one it will do. It has 3 holes in the top for the smoke to escape and the hole for the ashes is in the back.

I just bought a box of wooden cups and two mugs from a lady for $10 - looked like stuff left over from a garage sale (still had the little price stickers on each piece). Anyway one of the mugs was a "Small Four Face Tiki Bowl" by Orchids of Hawaii. When I got it home, I realized it had never been used to drink out of because the original retail sticker was still on the inside. The sticker is from Tiki Gardens, dated 3/68, (the original price was a whopping $1.29). Needless to say this one is going up on a shelf, and not used for the bar! I'll try to post pics later this week. The other mug was an Orchids R-74...now I just have to figure out what to do with the wooden cups.

Instead of heading to the mall I went to the thrifts for their day after Christmas deals...meaning all the stores were 1/2 off everything.

I managed to pick up these 3 Harvey's and a Trader Dick's for just a few dollars. Nothing exciting but nice to see them all together.

The best part was getting it relatively dirt-cheap (less than $30 for everything). The mugs were all marked as "vases", so the sellers clearly had no idea they were collectible. They all had dirt in them as well, so the previous owners had obviously used them as planters. Don't think I'm gonna make any drinks in them until they've soaked in cider vinegar for a day or so.

I just watched "Brides of Fu Manchu" a couple of weeks ago. Gotta love Christopher Lee in bad oriental makeup.

Duane,ha! How did you know :)

Yeah, the Treasure Trove. We averaged a little over 20% off. Not bad. The place was packed, but no one was buying tiki stuff so we had our pick of the litter, not just the dregs... a nice surprise. Still looking for Don in the wild. sigh... had fun though. I know we spent way more than you do, but that's our M.O. Hope you and Amy are enjoying this last holiday weekend. Lets get together soon! Cheers until then :)

Hi Bill, hope you enjoyed your holiday in No. Cal. Nice meeting you. Hope to see you sometime in your home turf. We'll try to get to So. Cal sometime this year. We'll let you know when we are in town.
