Really digging the mini-moai.

Recent acquisitions from area shops and yard sales:

Hawaii Kai NYC mug

Kon Tiki Hotel Phoenix salt & pepper shakers

Hawaii souvenir resin bottle spout (Cook Island style?)

70's steel Primo beer can

Midcentury Pioneer bamboo spear & mask tie clip (Can't find much on this one. May have had matching cufflinks)

Real bamboo painted panel. Perhaps part of a folding screen? Had to mend the torn matting. Surprisingly fragile stuff. 2 bucks!

Ok
Met someone here in town who use to live in Micronesia.
He had a few items he wanted to let go of.
He got them all between 1999-2000
:)

2 squatters from the island of Yap:

12 inch

6 inch

Tapa:

Two Chuukese Love Sticks:

And here’s the ironic thing.
The night before I was going through one of my tribal arts magazines,
I saw an article on these, took a few photos of some of the images If the carvings.
The next day I own one.

A beautiful 19 inch Tino Aitu.
Carved by a mortockese on the island of Pohnpei.

Cheers all

In any spare time I have, I tend to stumble onto the Mandarake website which is based in Japan. Typically geared towards soft vinyl toy or any sort of Japanese pop culture memorabilia collectors, Mandarake is a wonderful site to get lost on. Today however I came across a minty fresh Rockin' Jelly Bean/Erostika mug. Amazing! $50 is a steal for sure.

hang10tiki I've never seen a dead eye or even knew it existed. What is the origin? Wendy

H
hang10tiki posted on 02/29/2020

Aloha Wendy

A deadeye is an item used in the standing and running rigging of traditional sailing ships. It is a smallish round thick wooden disc with one or more holes through it, perpendicular to the plane of the disc. Single and triple-hole deadeyes are most commonly seen. The three-holed blocks were called deadeyes because the position of the three holes resemble the eye and nose sockets of a sheep's skull.
A single deadeye (or bull's eye) used to change the direction of a line.
Single deadeyes (or bull's eyes) are used to guide and control a line and, particularly in older vessels, to change its direction. More modern systems would use a block for this purpose but in traditional rigs with many lines to deal with, designed when blocks were relatively expensive to make, a deadeye provided an acceptable compromise. When blocks came into common use for adjusting running rigging, deadeyes continued to be used for tensioning standing rigging.

PS- had one of my best fines ever today, I will clean it up and post it tomorrow

hang10tiki You found a real dead eye from a ship and in wood. That's special. Maybe from 1700???

When you do the "find" from yesterday I hope you do it with dim light and with a flash.

Wendy: Not sure how old it is

Ok
Here’s the story
Met a guy who had a black velvet painting.
He said he got it in 1980, he was an auctioneer,
selling off everything from a bakery that was closing down in Milwaukee.
He said the black velvet painting was of a naked girl,
it was in a secret room in the bakery where they watched stag films.
Sold off everything in the bakery except the painting,
he took it as part of his payment.
Lucky me :)

Anyway, here she is

Some tikis I picked up over the last 3 years. Lower left is half a Bumatay carved south of Seattle next to it are two 7 1/2 and one 8 1/2 foot tall tikis and in the upper right corner is a 21 foot tiki. The last 3 were carved by Art McKellips in Tacoma WA around 1966 for the Tongaroa (later Tiki) Apartments.

Oh and that's Jim Kruize (Gone Tiki) who helped me get them to my place and has helped me resurrect them.

Here's where a few went... Screen Shot 2022-03-18 at 10.59.22 PMImage Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/12811/6235715ebd67a.png?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=5fe93f489a4e1db06cc0adcd4bc1f8ff

Incredible finds, tikicoma. The Polynesia tiki is especially amazing, and enormous. Nice work! I can't wait to see what others have unearthed over the last couple of years while TC was offline.

Speaking of fun recent finds, there have been lots for me since this thread was last active, but this one was probably the most memorable.

They had apparently been sitting on a shelf collecting dust for decades, and this is what they looked like before I gave them a thorough cleaning. It was a pretty nice surprise to happen upon in the wild...of the rural midwest.

Picked up this Fiji tapa cloth today. Measures about 24”x24”

*needs to be “ironed” out a bit and has some staining in the center but still stoked to add it to the collection
