Uncovered this sheet of "Taipei Tapa" at my favorite local co-op not a half hour ago. The figures seem odd, maybe African, maybe Southeast Asian? I am not sure. Either way, at $10 I am happy to add it to the collection! Obviously made for the tourist trade. Anybody else familiar with the company? Google only comes up with a single geometric example from the Auckland War Museum collection...

So am not sure of the company, but these images I am pretty sure are Paiwan tribe style. The snakes are common in Paiwan imagery. I think the figures are ancestor and guardian stylized , and yes probably for tourist trade. The Paiwan have made tapas traditionally as well. Interesting note, the word Paiwan can translate also like the Maori definition of Tiki..."first man".

Had another adventure trying to track down some cone incense. Called my guy at the local head shop, asking if he carried any. He did, but we had to scurry into the basement to get it! Apparently cone incense is out if style among the college crowd. Gave me a half pound of the things for 5 bucks - I'm set for years now!

I found this light today, any info on it would be great!

Nice light. Could be OA or Benson imports or the many other places that sold lights way back when, looks old.

It came with no info?

I was just clicking on random pages on here and came across an Orchids of Hawaii catalog and found this image, pretty sure it’s the same! F7BCBE43-A3E4-4A14-B0E3-BF1ED6BDD156

Yeah, that looks like the same light but then many different tiki type outfitters sold that light.

I think one old Asian lady made all the lights back then and that's where they all came from.

I kid, but I don't think the places that sold the lights many times made the lights in house they got them from a supplier that got them from overseas.

OA did make some lights as well but stuff like those were most likely made elsewhere shipped to storefronts and sold.

There were many different company catalogs with that light in them.

So, unless somebody who knows where that light came from can tell you, well, you may never know for sure where it came from.

The Kahiki had many different companies that sold them decor, OA and Benson were just two of them that sold Kahiki decor so if I have a light from the Kahiki was it from one of those companies or even some other store, who knows.

Bought a record in High school it was a rare Led Zeppelin 45 and I checked out three different stores and each had a different price for that record, so I went with the cheapest guy and found out later that they were all trying to sell me the very same record from the guy I ended up getting the record from, the other two were going to buy it from the one guy and add a bit onto the price to make money.

Remember it ended up costing 45 bucks, one dollar for each RPM.

It's a cool light it's just that those lights are so damn heavy and big that many home bars would have a hard time hanging that baby.

So in a home bar that light most times would end up in a corner, and nobody puts baby in a corner.

Also a few big sheets of tapa cloth. Initially I went after them for lamp making but I also feel that there's probably a lot of different uses for them. I think the one with the triangular patterns would look nice framed and hung as is... IMG_20230613_182038

So I finally was able to add a nice Kundu to my collection. I've seen maybe a handful since I've been collecting and they all were in very poor condition, except for one which I saw a long time ago and I'm only guessing that one was in good condition because I do remember they were asking a lot for it. This one only has a tiny bit broken off it which you have to look really hard for to notice. Not much more now I'm really after. 358113581_10230717484061266_3491030272285301650_nImage Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/7298/64a5460421fa2.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=6a6a97796282dec890f482a5619c37e3

Considering the restaurant that sold it was open from 1942 thru 1967 (when it burned to the ground), chances are a fair number were produced. That said it's old now and probably worth more than more recent stuff - it looks pretty cool!

Edit: As of right now there's one on eBay they are asking $10k for (!). Good luck with that! There's also a repro menu from that location for sale, looks fun.

Impossible to find out how many were made. Many mug manufacturers held molds in reserve and would make replacement mugs on request with a decent sized order. “Field collecting”, breakage and general damage would take a toll on in stock numbers. Many runs were “one and done” runs due to cost. When the run was exhausted they would put a the same cocktail in a nondescript glass and call it good. In the end mugs are only worth what someone is willing to pay. Could ten dollars or a thousand. All depends on how badly two people want it.

Another trip to Colorado, and more tiki finds. This time at an antique store that rarely has anything remotely tiki (and when they do it's way overpriced.)

Until Tuesday:

This guy looked like he needed a home. He's now my new birthday present. IMG_20230824_180203421 post3Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/82778/64e7db6253d71.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=bf00c679b6f475e59848c36cc59eb17a

And a Coco Joe's "letter holder". It will be put to good use holding bar napkins. IMG_20230824_180256005 post3Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/82778/64e7db7583469.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=518389d76bb820c330623972f930ad38

Hi All,

I bought this piece last week. I do not know much about is, so if everyone has some extra information for me would be much appreciated. Thanks. Greetings Jorber.

Scored a Coco Joe wall plaque. An Austral Islands ceremonial paddle tourist piece and a West African tribal ceremonial spear. Man, that thing is out of sight.

I think I know her.

I dated her in the 70s.

What kind of impression did you leave on her?

WILL she remember you?
