The Kona Kai in Philadelphia entrance, Kahiki interior and the Warehouse Cocoanut Grove, Don the Beachcomber menu detail and interior of the Luau in Beverly Hills Kahiki drink detail, Trader Vic's Boston interior and International Marketplace with Don the Beachcomber sign in bottom right hand corner. Sadly though after digging through Baltimore hotels and restaurants until my fingers were sore and my eyes started getting crossed, I didn't find a Hawaiian Room at the Emerson Hotel. Oh well!

She allowed me out on Saturday to do my 2 hour run as it was my birthday and she didn't buy me anything. (Couldn't blame her). Anyway, I scored this. Ugly salt shaker (looks like Black Lagoon creature) 2 Bob's from Bali Hai (total cash $9.00) 1 Huki Lau mug. Bali Hai matchstick book Hawaii souvenir magnet Westwood little thingy Tapa hanging Cloth 2 by 3 feet When I got back I got some cool stuff from PJ. Those I ordered for myself. Every place I went I scored and only spent $20. Strange days.

When I pulled it out of the box to look at it, it started to fall apart under it's own weight, so I took it apart and made some overhead light fixtures for my basement room, "The Mango Pit".

But yesterday I dropped by my favorite antique store and came across this pair o' mugs for $6.99. They are similar to this bucket mug I saw in Humahuma's Ooga-Mooga collection. They say "Kho Wah Chinatown". Any ideas or info? Mahalo :drink:

I probably wouldn't have given it another look, except I noticed the word "Hawaii" on it... "What's this?" I thought, "Crude, chunky, from Hawaii... Could it be?" Sure enough, I turned it over... and Trader Vic's Hawaii is scratched in the bottom. On the side it has... Peeping Tom. I may sell it or trade it 'cuz I'd rather have something that's a tiki. Or who knows, I may just keep it because I can already feel myself getting attached to the ugly thing (and I have two other clunky TV Hawaii mugs to keep it company). I only check it once a week at most. Someone had just turfed their entire collection of S&Ps! There was also a set of wood pineapples and tiny wood barrels, but I left them behind.(still there) These are hand carved, maybe from blanks? Crude, but I really like them! Odd that they're different. Maybe some tourist said, 'can I have one of each?'

Also found this guy at the flea market: Probably my best recent find was these: Both unused and full of matches too! I'm not really a matchbook collector...how good of a find are these?

Thursday, Saturday and Monday were devoted to scouring thrift shops, antique malls and flea markets in search of tiki. Here's what I found: (Front) Coco Joes tiki pen holder, Coco Joes menehune carving a tiki figurine, tiki from Guam. (Back) Yet another Don Ho glass for the collection, a glass that says "Mogambo Bar-Cafeteria TEL 6323 CAMAGUEY," Sea World tiki coffee mug (actually got two of those). Close up of the Coco Joe. I've never seen this one before. The tag says he's "Kuipeka" and he carved the tiki wiki wiki, with his magic knife. Pair of paint by numbers. My second R-12 in the past few months. Yet another TV menehune stir. My second small Polynesian Village goblet, these are smaller than the more commonly found ones. My second Quon Quon decanter in the past six months, but the other one I found was not as in as good a shape and was lacking the stopper. And then there's a neat souvenir plate in the back. Carved mask from Tonga. Weird little bowl up front. Unmarked moai mug. Graphic Novel "Maui - Legends of the Outcast." It was published in New Zealand. Close up of the weird bowl thing. 69 cents at Goodwill. Here's where I really scored. Menus! I never find menus (well there was one a couple months ago...but besides that one). I scored a bunch at a flea market. These three are all from Disney Polynesian Village. They're OK, pretty plain. They do have inserts hawking mai tais and Navy grogs, but no pics. Two from Trader Vics. The large one is dated 1970 but does not say which location it came from. The smaller one is a mail out menu from the St Petersburg Florida TV. I wonder if the larger one is from St Pete as well? Even though it's a mini in size, it's still a full nine page menu. Beef 'n Reef, Cocoa Beach Florida. Nice tiki inside. Aloha! I never heard of the place. Dobbs House Tiki. Love this menu! Apparently a chain of polynesian restaurants. Funny but true: I scored all these menus at a flea market that's over an hour drive away out in the country. I ask the guy if he's got a shop. Yes. Where? His shop is about 400, maybe 500 YARDS from where I live! Weird. He doesn't have any more menus, but he's got tens of thousands of postcards so maybe I can find some nice tiki PCs. A pretty good weekend even without the menus, which were a very nice icing on the cake.

It's like Basement Kahuna used to say, it's out there you just have to know where to look. And then get out there and actually look. Hell, two/three weeks ago I kept visiting "Tiki Finds" and all I could think was "What? Has all the tiki been moved to Canada??" I am stoked about the menus though.

Maybe at yard sales, but I don't do yard sales (too much frustration). For two years I've been asking antique stores "do you have menus?" and it has yielded one find. Flea markets seem to have a lot of folks selling paper collectibles and I always ask them if they have menus. Finally scored today. Today I asked the vendors where they get their menus and they said that they have an ad in the Yellow Pages and it states that they buy paper collectibles and so people call them up. Plus they have a network of contacts. The guy told me he has a friend with a quarter million post cards in a warehouse! Keep searching. I just don't get how there's so many menus on ebay but I never see them "in the wild." Maybe yard sales and estate sales are the answer.

A tourist tiki, carved in Hawaii. I got this glass from my Grammie's house after she passed away. I have not been able to find any information about the club it came from. It's a northwest totem pole, not a tiki, but there might be a connection somewhere in there.

I got lucky at an antique mall just this afternoon. Bought these two OMC surfer girl mugs (never heard of John Ascuaga's Nugget, though. Anybody know anything about it?) and this very nice King Kamehameha figurine by Frank Schirman. I passed on some over-priced Coco Joes for the cheaper Schirman! I'd like to learn more about his work; not much about him here.
