New stuff:

A couple Hawaiian wood carvings

Pisco Moai bottle:

Polyart Li'l Haw'n Queen

Matted Hawaiian print

Mr. C's Long Beach Matchbook matches . I'll put all sides of this one in here because I couldn't find another on TC.

Buzzy Out!

Buzzy,

Great matchbook, I have been looking for a Mr. C's item for a long time. Mr. C's was the restaurant located at the Outrigger Inn Motor Hotel in Long Beach. Here is a brochure posted by Kenike back in 2006

Dusty,

Like Buzzy's, your post lights the Tiki Torch!

Been looking for anything about Mr. C's ever since Sven choose the menu cover shown in the Chapter 8 opening of Tiki Modern (Mmmm..., what's the name of that chapter?). I used to ride an old 10 speed through the Outrigger as a short cut home from school many a time. Buzzy's matchbook shows the circle logo with chain links, which was also the cool sign that hung out front which resembled a giant gong. As a LB lifer, thanks for sharing. It makes me want to apply myself more...towards a degree in Urban Archaeology!

Nothing monumental, slow day, but found this stuff today...

Two more of the usual suspect "Comedy and Tragedy" larger Creature mugs. Does anyone need these?

"Surfin' at Waikiki-Sam Koki And The Paradise Islanders".

"Cast Your Fate To The Wind-The Exotic Sounds of Arthur Lyman".

That's it, see ya's later!

PTD

anyone know anything about the monkey?

That ain't no monkey! That's our former president! Maybe it came from Poli-Tiki? LOL

BT

So it IS our former pres! lol

That monkey is awesome, me want!

Here are some finds the last few days. A few old, mostly new, but some great deals!

A nice Reyn Spooner shirt, brand new never worn for $25! Matt will wear this at Tiki Oasis I'm sure, it's really great!

Another fine tiki shirt, thrift store find

My "man lamp" I call him... a great buy at $75

A nice batik painting, the colors work well in our lounge

my googly eyed 50's fish plate, he called to me, and for $1.99 I had to have him.

Picked up this book and some mugs at Swansberg's yesterday

and... picked up the latest Tiki Mag, featuring ME!! We took Tiki Mag to Mexico with us in December, left it in the tourbus, RAN to the bus to get it, RAN back out to Chichen Itza in 100 degree heat, took our photos and RAN back to the bus just in time! Good thing they served us cervezas to quench our thirst!

More new stuff:

A pair of Coco joe's Kus:

These are cool because they have the older tags from before they changed the wording

A HIP piece I had only seen as a bottle opener before:

Queen K came with the Kus:

The Fu Manchu has a sticker on the bottom that says "Charle Chan." The other one is plastic

Tiki international glass, El Hawaiano from Peru:

Is it tiki, tarzan, or just tits?

One out of three ain't bad!

Boy, Buzzy, it sure looks like your Pied Piper. Does it have the same logo on the bottom?

yes.

Buzzy Out!

Mystery solved. Thanks, Buzzy!

found a quon-quon ashtray

coco joes ku book ends, with tag still on back

not tiki, but a cool barrel mug with a windup musical drunk

a stack of virgin island coasters, again not tiki but for 50 cents i couldnt say no

and 2 more coco joes, both irregularly warped. the guy selling them said he used them to prop open glass jewelry cases, and them being in the sun with the weight on them caused them to bend. I guess thats why he let them go for soo cheap.

Here's some stuff from the past couple months. Estate sales & thrift stores have been really good the last few weeks especially. Sorry if the post is too long. I need to update more often.

A large nicely glazed pineapple bowl marked "Italy".

Not sure what this resin boat held. Condiments? Candles? Ashes?

Hobbyist mug & lone shaker.

Chinese made shakers & mugs.

Large ceramic Bank.

Mmmm old beer... Normally these wooden mugs get hung up in my tree out back, but this one is staying sealed.

Bamboo vase & mug. The vase has an unglazed rough china finish and is marked "AIDON Accessories Ltd. 1974 NYC".

Crude Mai-Kai barrel. Is this homemade?

Ashtray.

More Mugs. I actually found 2 of the Aliis mugs & they were spraypainted gloss red. Citri-strip removed the paint easily, but the other mug has a chip & the red is set in.

More Shakers.

Mugs...

Pick holders & lantern.

Oriental themes.

The ship & tiki mug are from Kings Island amusement park.

Looks to be the same style with the high gloss interior & matte exterior.
More Pics:

Here's a link showing some Langbein cantaloupe bowls in the same style:

I just found one of those resin boats last week (as depicted in caffinated's post above), I figured it held shot glasses. Anyone know? BTW I tried to wash it in soap and water but the color started coming off, so I had to use a damp rag instead. These delicate artifacts....

They originally held jars of jelly or jam.

Finally my non-stop talking about tiki to everyone I know finally paid off. My uncle lives up in Modesto and picked these up for me at a garage sale a while back and brough them down yesterday. 5 Harvey's bucket mugs (1 with sticker), and 4 Orchids R6 mugs. Sometimes I wish I lived up north with the amount of stuff that seems to be found on a constant basis.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew how to get some of those jade green hanging tiles that are used as divider walls in so many old tiki establishments. I've always seen them in pictures and never thought twice about them, but when I saw the new entry to DTB that Bamboo Ben built with them, I couldn't help but want some. I'm not quite sure if they're a strictly vintage-type item, or if somewhere in china, they have a factory spitting them out by the thousand. I haven't been able to find anything like them, so if anyone has info, I'd appreciate it!

Ask Bamboo Ben in a pm about where he got those at. I feel like he mentioned it somewhere in the original post about Don's being built but I can't find it.

I dont think he reads this thread all that often so pming him would make better sense.

Also Northern California doesn't have anything to find...it's all a lie. We buy it from Ebay. promise!

Good Mug deal at Cost Plus.

I was at Cost Plus in Studio City CA yesterday and I spotted these.

They were marked $3.99, but when I got to the register the gal told me they were closing these out at $1 each.
The mugs say Libbey on the bottom. They are big, heavy, and have a nice thick glaze.

For $1 each, they can go on the shelf or be used for other projects.

Been finding a lot of duplicate stuff so this is all that I am posting because it was new to me.

An Easter Island statue for $0.50. Its about 9" high by 6" wide and is made to look all mossy.

Thanks Leleliz and Paipo. Now I've got hope that there's a stash to be found somewhere!

While out Goodwilling today for stuff to put in the basement
I find a few items and a Hawaii Calls record.

the hula girl playin ukulele matches my other hula girl from the other day and I couldn't pass up the grass skirt Santa w/ukulele

Meanwhile the other half and her mom were at Big Lots and came home with these...

Got this off Ebay from a seller 10 miles down the road from me. She received it from a friend in Hawaii. It is a carved Koa Ku I think. He is 15" high.

I haven't posted my finds in a while so here's my Goodwill, Thrift Store finds from the last couple of months.
Goodwill Stuff.

Thrift Store Stuff.

This is my best find at a thrift store ever.

I also found this in a trash can. Just needs a new cushion.

Happy hunting everyone.
Mike

Recent finds...

Found barrel someone had added lamp kit $2.00
Added $0.25 shade; decorated with copies of Rum labels

That's a good find. If you have a decent camera I think there's some writer who might like a pic of it for a book.

I just scored all this for $50 and yes the suffering bastard is the real deal

Nice score!

From the Seattle Guide, published by Bill Spiedel (author of Be My Guest in the Pacific Northwest). No year.

From a Lake of the Ozarks travel guide. No year. (Early to mid 60s at the latest.)

Gourmet magazine July 1960

Natural History magazine May 1935

Found just in time for summer! Credit for this find actually goes to my brother Steve who was nice enough to keep me in mind on a recent outing. For a book from 1952 it's actually in really good shape. it even has that authentic old book smell!
