I guess you'd better PM Hanford and tell him someone has stolen your password or hacked your account at 12:16. I had already brought it to his attention earlier anyway, so I guess he can decide if I am making this all up - the PM is still sitting in my inbox now.

From this point on, I am not going respond to you anymore in this thread or via PM as it has just gotten too weird for me. I already regret bringing it up at all, but let's face it - if we all sit idly by while good threads get shit on, TC wouldn't be worth visiting anymore. I also think when someone sends me an abusive message responding to something I have posted publicly (where I am prepared to stand by my opinion), the response should also be public. Moderation seems almost non-existent around here at present and it's a crying shame to see the amount of insults and abuse that have been flying around unchecked. Some people take this stuff way too seriously.

They were on the fourth shelf down of a collectors case in an antique mall stuffed with S&P's. They were also turned around backward, all for $2. They hate Tiki in the south, they're evil! LOL

I spent some time working on this post last night but TC went down just before I could pull the trigger. Let's try again....

Take 2 -
Here is some stuff I picked up some time ago but never got around to posting. This is the leftover stock from a souvenir business that closed down in Auckland...6 original carved wood masters and about 70 resins. The company was called "Bird Hill".

Here are the masters - I have no way to be sure these were all carved by the same artist, but it is very much in the institutional/Rotorua style according to my local whakairo expert. The guy who sold me the pieces had little to offer on their history. I also asked about the molds, but they had perished so he threw them all out.

Tekoteko...this is the only one that is signed - it has a little "jesus fish" on the base >

It is very tempting to remove him from his slab, but I kind of like the detritus of all the molds that have been taken from the carving.

Big Tuatara

About 12" long. See that pencil writing on the base board that says "Reduce to 220mm"?....

Last, but certainly not least - a Hei Tiki. The taratara a kae surface notching on this lil fella is mindblowingly tiny. I will probably take a mold from this at some point because I'd love to see one of these finished with paua eyes.

I have since disposed of many of the extras, and some have made their way to interesting locations:

I'd be keen to see examples of the resins I don't have (two ashtrays, hei tiki and lil tuatara) if anyone has found them in the wild....or any other "Bird Hill" products that are out there. I don't have any individual pics of the resins in the group and they are packed away right now, but if I dig them out I'll post 'em up.

I also have much more to share on the velvet I posted, but that will have to wait until I can access a scanner - I dropped my last one a couple of months ago. :(

hey big kahuna,here are a couple more things i have around the house.i found the seahorse lamp at a junk shop in methuen along with 13 small bamboo light fixtures.i have been on the lookout for quite a few years.there is a old giant maori tiki in western mass for sale.it is about 8' tall and very detailed.the guy wants a astronomical amount though.

I found an interesting carving at an Estate sale on Saturday:


I'm not sure of provenance; I'm thinking it's related to or copied from the carvings that used to hang between the bathrooms at the Bali Hai, but I don't know where those carvings came from (PNG?), and I never took a picture of them to compare this against.

I had to look Tene Waitere up - I just bought the "Maori Wood Sculpture" book with his famous piece on the cover last week (finally) - but I wasn't familiar with his name and work. Is there an old piece you've seen that is close to this? This style to me is very commercial and late 20th century, much like what happened with Hawaiian art and the Coco Joe's pieces, where tradition was tweaked to accommodate the expectations of the tourist market.

Paul - if you can live with the tacky gold paint job, I probably have 1 or 2 of these left in the box. I'll get it down soon and let you know.

I have been a fan of Tene ever since I found out that he carved RAURU, the amazing Maori Haus I know since my schooldays from visiting it at the Hamburg Anthropology Museum. Here it is still in situ in Rotorua:

Here he is carving on the cover of the best book about him and his tribe:

Above on the left you can see a post with Tikis similar to the one we have. Below he is working with another carver on Rauru:

...and the two entrance posts in the background show similar Tikis.

Thanks Sven and Buzzy...now I know there are brown and black variants, I'm very tempted to try and find examples to complete the set. (A+ to that ebay seller for the sales pitch too...pretty good effort for a $7.95 resin!)

Sven, you're on the money as usual...those post figures are a very close match and it looks entirely possible to me that Tene may have created that particular style of tekoteko. They still make them in Rotorua today so his influence has been far-reaching. Rauru and Carved Histories have been added to the wishlist too - it's very hard to buy all the great books on Maori art published in NZ as there are so damn many of 'em!

Scrawled on the back: "MARSHALL BRought BACK FROM TIWIN 1978 when in NAVY" I suppose that's Taiwan? The carving is 21 inches tall. I don't know enough about woods to know kind its carved from.

I never get to post in this thread as Tiki finds here in Australia are very rare indeed. Even this wasn't found by myself, but given to me as a gift from a friend on his return from a recent trip to Fiji.

Beleive me when i say there are tikis everywhere, not so much mugs ect but coco joes and carved souvenirs abound, start getting up real early and heading to trash and treasures ( Camberwell rocks ) , also opshops little churchy ones not the bigger st vinnies or Goodwills , make friends with dealers and workers let them know what you like but never tell them more than you need too,the secret is the early bird catches the worm.. I start at 4.30 am most sundays..( i am still pissed half the time O_O)

Dont worry, I hear ya. I cant walk past an op-shop without having a look hoping to find something. Unfortunately all I ever come across is New Zealand Maori pieces which I must say i'm not a huge fan of. I've honestly only found 2 Coco Joe's pieces, 3 wooden carvings and 1 mug, although when I was up in Sydney a few months back I found 5 wooden mugs and have also had a friend give me a wooden mug and another friend found a ceramic one for me at Camberwell market. (4.30 is too early for me. I'm usually just going to bed) :)

Can't believe that i've been able to add to this tread twice in about a week. Found this today at an op-shop (Goodwill). Had $15aus on it, which although I felt was a bit much I still would have paid as I very, very rarely find stuff, but asked if they could do any better and they knocked it down to $10. Score.

There's no markings on it but i'm guessing it's from Tonga. Does that sound right?
