I don't usually post on this thread but I figured I would try it out. Had a good find day yesterday and thought I would post it. Found these in a Thrift Store in Downtown Seattle...$2 for the Cigar Box and $1/ea. for the mugs (really). The next thing I found was $26...It was done by a local artist here in Seattle. It is a re-purposed, leather bound book with new Gold Embossing. Just a killer piece of work in my opinion. |

This week's stuff: 17" Cock eyed PNG guy 7" Vanuatu Slit drum guy 18" Fiji? club. Same handle weave as the one I found a couple weeks ago The Golden Mai Kai Chalace Some guy had a whole mess of woven Polynesian mats. Maybe a dozen of them. They looked like dance mats or something. Wrapped in one were about 10 pieces of tapa. A few were pretty bug ravaged, but I managed to get the few that were either not damaged, or barely damaged. 12' x 17' with no bug damage, one minor tear 2 - 4' x 6' no damage 5 x 8 with a small bug hole section in the middle crease. this one is about 15 x 20 and has a lot of large salvageable sections in it Buzzy Out! |

Yeah! And there I was hoping to walk with it all for my dream price of $50-60. When he said $10, I kind of got weak in the knees and hoped I'd heard right. If I would have known how cheap it all was, I probably would have taken the bad stuff too... Hopefully he'll be back next week and I'll have more time to dig. I had to do it all fast because there were these two dudes who saw me when I found the stash and they were trying to grab the good stuff from my pile as I was checking it out for damage. Damn buzzards! Buzzy Out! |

So I had a bit of a score over the weekend. Found a fellow selling his collection on Craigslist. A lot of it is dross, but there were a few interesting pieces...
A pair of Coco Joe's, though both are missing the labels, more's the pity. Also couple of newer resin pieces. If any one knows anything about them... Also a pair of plaster wall hangers... Some more modern pieces, if any one knows the salt and pepper shakers or the short mug I'd be glad to know it
A fun little wooden fellow, maybe 16" inches tall... And a few other wooden pieces I'm not sure what to make of... And these guys. The Harvey's is kinda rough, but its the other ones I'm curious about. They appear to be hobiest pieces, as one of the mugs is marked '69 with some peoples names, likewise the tall fellow, '66 and something about good luck etc etc. Any info would be appreciated. There was a bit of other stuff, bad Party City plastic tiki that will likely go to the Goodwill, some African and South American stuff the guy THOUGHT was tiki, but I'm reasonably pleased with the find as a whole. |

Can't tell you about many of them except for two...and if anyone knows better or different, please correct me here. The figures below are vintage Napco ceramic tiki statues. It's obviously made from a mold cast of the one on the right. The next one is probably a hobbiest mug (or a Seattle Worlds fair mug?) that is originally attributed to Andres Bumatay. I actually have a set of 6 of these that I found at a thrift store. The photo is from my collection on Ooga Mooga. hopefully that helps a little. |

I MADE A FIND!! Carefully removing it from the wall and looking at the back I see the price, $2.00! Definitely in my price-range! So, I really want to get it cleaned up and re-framed in something that will protect it, and that doesn't look like it came off a clearance rack from Woolworth's circa 1978. If anyone has any helpful information, advice, thoughts, suggestions of things Not to do, that would be Greatly appreciated! This-un's a keeper! |

Picked up this tapa yesterday, and it's huge. It's a little strange though. The imagery seems Western. I don't know much about tapa cloth. Can any body fill me in on what I have here? Trying to convince the little lady to let me keep it. The woman at the estate sale suggested cutting it up and selling some of it and keeping the rest of it for myself, but that makes me cringe a bit.
These look like eagles and lions to me, maybe a crown? I dunno...
This looks like a crest or seal but I don't recognize it. The trees, sun and moon and star seem like odd imagery too.
Also not sure what to make of the birds and numbers going up the sides... |

You have a Tongan Ngatu. You can tell because the crest on it is the official seal of Tonga. The pine trees are Holo Paini, the motif representing the Norfolk Pines that line the street to the Royal Palace. The Bird is Ikale Tahi, the Sea Eagle, the Tongan national bird. the Lion is synomymous with the King of Tonga. I don't know what the pokey looking thing under the bird is. It's common, but I don't know what it's supposed to represent. Buzzy Out! |

Thanks Buz! I knew someone amongst the big brains here would be able to tell me something! My next question though, is what would something like this have been intended for? Cream, was it made his tourist peace, where they going to cut it up and make skirts and of it, what? And Nauga, that's awesome! Looks like you found a tiki chibi. grin |

I didn't find any tapa this week. Still a little soon to call it a drought, but I'm worried nonetheless... I hadn't gone to Goodwill in months, but when I went by the other day, the voice in my head said to go. Spider sense tingling, I found this crappy Indonesian tiki on the shelf full of baskets. Polyart unmarked Schirman piece. Auction catalog: Samoan outrigger:
Just some ramblings about tapa off the top of my head: Buzzy Out! |

The 1963 date is the date the mold was made. The mug was most likely made in a number of runs over the years. My thought is that the lack of detail in your mug may mean it is a late production as the molds tended to wear out with continued production. I think pining down an actual date beyond 1963 may be difficult. Nice find though. |

You and Dan always have an open invitation, but it's not that impressive to you guys because I only have 8-9 tiki mugs. Bulllet said Dan and I would probably have a lot to talk about with our record collections too. I have a ton of Zappa and Beatles rarities... C'mon down!
