Wow! They're gorgeous, Wahine. They'd look fine on the walls of your tiki bar. If the autographs are authentic I'm pretty sure that'd make them more valuable, but it's hard to tell from a scan -- you're going to have to send them to me for verification :)

Here are my finds from the weekend.

One large CocoJoes # 151 $5
CocoJoes "Hawaii" Letter opener #53 (I think)$1,
Unmarked Tiki mug $5 "A strange hybrid mug that looks like a cross between the Orchids R-3 and a Treasure Craft Mug" - Pg 60, Tiki Quest.

Its been 2 weeks (due to the holidays) that I've had a chance to go to the swapmeet, so not too bad.

Here are some vintage Moai lights my brother found for me a few weeks ago. He said he paid $1.00 to fill-up a box at a garage sale, so if you break it down by how much stuff he fit in the box, he paid about 15 cents for these.

Tikiwahine, those look wonderful!

Just got back from thrifting and found a few trinkets:
A black and white flower print shirt, a wooden bowl that I will use as a fresh fruit bowl, a Buddha from Benihanas in Tokyo, a barrel mug with a handle that has a very 50's looking Daytona Beach decal on it, a chrome jigger that has 3/4 oz on one side and 1 1/4 oz on the other, a purple mug with an unusual face that reads "Accoutrements" on the bottom, and a Trader Vics coconut mug. I spent $10 for everything. :)

Any idea how old the coconut mug might be? I don't know if these are still made or when they stopped making them. I'm also curious about the Daytona Beach mug. I realize it was probably bought in a gift shop or something, but it still caught my eye because the decal looks so old.

Fink Daddy, that purple mug came in a set of four (different designs and colors, one of each). I believe Tiki Farm & Archie McPhee sell the set, but it's a common set to find in many retail stores when spring mechandise comes out.

Went thrifting again on Saturday.

A super heavy-duty Hoover brand blender. Came with a recipe book that was printed in 1971.

3 cute shot-sized tiki mugs. The one on the right is slightly chipped.

I didn't find any tiki in Milwaukee for over a year, then BAM, I find it all over. :D

Just a note on that blender. Traditionally, Polynesian cocktails are not blended, but made with a top MIXER (before that, they were hand shaken of course). Best known are the Hamilton Beach ones. Blenders came into style with the Margarita cocktail.

The old time mixologists insist on mixers, stating that the resulting texture is different.

I found a really sweet aloha shirt this weekend from Toes on the Nose. Picked it up at the goodwill for $5.99. It's got some drinks on it (inlcuding what appears to be an Orchids of Hawaii, R-5. It also has the menu cover (I think) from the traders, complete with the maori style tiki.
I also found this mug, which was somewhat confusing. If I don't uncover any information from this thread, maybe I'll post in general tiki. The mug is from the Warehouse Restaurant, and below it says Newport Beach and Marina Del Rey. There's no stamp or maker design on the bottom. Here's a photo:

Nestled in the Yacht harbor in Marina Del Rey, it still has it's original exterior landscaping, with Koy fish in the lagoon and old growth bamboo in the parking lot, and still serves a mean rum barrel cocktail (in the above container). Built by Burt Hixson in the early 60s, in the Trader/Beachcomber style. Burt used to be the skipper on John Wayne's private yacht (infamous for it's stag parties), and travelled all over the world as documentary camera man. In the restaurant there are great photos of him with various natives holding the Warehouse menu, very funny. In the 70s, he opened Beachbum Burt's (Book of Tiki p. 79), but this endeavor did not last very long.

As bigbro says, they're more nautical than tiki, but they do serve drinks in an array of different tiki mugs, including a rum barrel like the one you have above. AFAIK, the Marina del Rey location is the only one left, so your mug is at least a few years old. I remember the gang talking about the different locations there once were when we were there that night, maybe they can chime in. If you post it separately from Tiki Finds, you may be more likely to get a response (plus, others will be able to find it easier in the future if they search for "Warehouse").

On Sunday I went to the monthly swapmeet in Long Beach. The swapmeet is large, but instead of trying to see it all - scanning for mugs, I decided to take it slow. I wasn't on any schedule, so I made a point to stop at every booth with postcards or photos and search through them diligently. At the end of 5 hours, I had only covered about a third of the Swapmeet, but I had these good finds:

Overall, I paid a fraction of what these would have cost me on eBay. Plus I bought a fair number of rare non-tiki cards to sell on eBay myself, to re-coup my costs. I'd call it a sucessful day, although my neck is still sore from looking through all those boxes of postcards.

Dang! You always find the coolest stuff. Do they do the Long Beach meet every week? I'd be interested in checking that out sometime. Not to compete, mind, but if you only got through a third of it, there should be plenty for me to check out.

Great stuff, as always, Sabu.
I alaways liked that Sam's gift shop photo. A veritable treasure trove of stuff. On a personal level, I do enjoy seeing mention of MDR's Warehouse. It's where this little midnite got stated in most things "Tiki". The ole Sarge would come into town on business when I was in college and take me there. Dad didn't have a large laundry list of potential dining spots, he worked at Hughes Helicopters for quite some time and the Marina was right next door. He'd pick me up at 'SC and it was invariably, "Let's get some dinner, how 'bout Warehouse?". I knew it was coming every time, but I never said "Nah, how about some other place, just once?"

On that small snapshot. I thought it might be the shopping center on Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki. I have a pc featuring the exterior and there are many Tikis lining the storefronts. Maybe, it's hard to tell, probably not. Not sure, could be.

Midnight - You had a privileged and pampered college life. My dad says nowadays, "If I knew you were going to be into Tiki this much, I would have taken you to all those places when you were a kid." I'm just thankful that we still have the Warehouse and Tony's On The Pier to visit today. I hereby resolve to visit each of them several times this year. Who knows how long they'll last.

I was also reminded of that postcard of Kalakua Avenue. It could be. Maybe.

Wow Sabu, persistence pays off! I just don't have the patience to slog through all those postcards to find the treasures. There are BOXES and BOXES of them at the flea market, and a lot of them aren't sorted in categories. We were there at Long Beach this last Sunday, but didn't see you. Next time I'll keep an eye out for someone sifting through the postcards!

The old giftshop at Sam's existed in the 1960s and maybe into the 1970s. The current owner says it took up the narrow front room immediately to the right of the entrance doorway, as you're entering the dining room proper. This room is mostly kept closed and for storage, but we did get to use it to host King Kukulele's birthday party last year.

Tikibird - Your's is the thousand-dollar question (because that's probably the price that mug would fetch on eBay today). I've heard a rumor of a rumor about a collector who might own one. Also, I think Trader Pup says he saw one appear on eBay over three years ago. I'm going garage/estate-saling in Huntington Beach this Saturday, hoping to get a clue in my own personal search.

More common (but still not that common) is the DAGA Moai mug that they used later, with the Sam's Seafood logo stencilled on the back:

The DAGA moai is pretty sweet. I'd probably kill someone for one of those volcano bowls. Too cool. Sam's has a special place in my heart. It was one of the first tiki bars I ever went to. My wife and I did the rehearsal dinner for our wedding there, too. I love that place......

I'm curious about the green fogcutter looking mugs behind the first row.
what's the deal with those?

for the last couple years there has been a Daga "menehune magic" style mug from Sam's at a local antique shop. I dont know if it is still there, but it is the kind with the menehune guy leaning over a bowl, with the sam's logo on the bowl. (same as the daga moai mug sabu posted above) if anyone is interested, it was $6 & I could check to see if it is still there

If so, then maybe the signature kneeling tiki mug and bowl were also made by Spurlin. It's an intriguing possibility. Do you know of other companies that manufactured fogcutter mugs?

P.S. Kono - that souvenir photo folder from the Hawaiian Room is priceless. I'm a big fan of those. That artwork on the outside is beautiful. Nice mug and lamp too.

Here is a pix (appropriated from swankola.com. Sorry Sweet Daddy Tiki!) of a Spurlin mug. Don't know if this helps narrow down the mystery any. There are similarities between this mug and the myster mug... but then again this is a fairly standard design for Tiki mugs. Could it be that the mugs in questions may be bigger and more detailed versions? Hmmmmmm.....

Here's some of the stuff I got this weekend.



I got nine of these glasses. They are about 4" tall.

This weekend we found a couple of mugs:

a bamboo style one and an R-1 from the Jeckyl and Hyde Club

And we found this record that I am interested in trading:

As you can see, it has 5 discs and is in near mint condition. It has the original plastic on it, and the discs look like they've never been played (although I am sure they were). I don't collect records, so I will entertain offers of trade for it if anyone else is. I'm more interested in mugs and statues. PM me if you want to trade.

Are those fogcutter mugs yours? They are quite tasty.
As for the tiki mugs, I think they kinda look like a cross betweem the kona kai mug & this modern china mug.

YES way! It was a great day indeed & probably one of the better scores I've made in the wild. I had to do a triple take because the thrift that I found them in is an endless sea of total crap & I usually find nothing there.

(& as you know, I rarely keep my doubles, so you may have a crack at one on ebay soon!)
