Today was pretty much dollar day and I found it extremely difficult to pass up any of these items. I call most of these "starter" mugs, as in what most people find at first when they start their mug collections... Four unmarked OMC Mr. Peanut mugs. Note the difference of size of the midddle and outside mugs. Three Harveys "Sneaky Tiki" bucket mugs, one Trader Dick's jewel-eyed mug and a "Tiki Leilani". Three different OMC Harvey's Lake Tahoe hula girl mugs. Two Westwood tiki mugs, a New Zealand Maori bottleopener and a PMP small tiki handled mug. Aqaurium Moai decoration. One of the nicest Mermaid soapdishes I have found, along with the first Coco Joe's piece I have found that is said to be made with Monkeypod. "Songs of the Islands" Interpreted by Lawrence Welk featuring Buddy Merrill. "Pianos in Paradise" Ferrante & Teicher with their Orchestra Conducted By Nick Perito. Interesting enough, this is actually a spiral binder travel brochure from Hawaiian Airlines. It has around 60 pages of information about traveling the islands and what to do while there, with the same maps I have seen in the smaller brochures. It also includes a record of "Honeymoon In Hawaii" by the Hilo Hawaiians. Hawaiian Airlines Map of the State of Hawaii. International Market Place. Polynesian Cultural Center. I haven't done exhaustive research on it yet, but I'd guess PNG. It's about two feet tall. A plaster copy of the CCJ's bookend/Pied piper/Randotti war god I never picked this up in my Pink Floyd or HST phase, so I got it now while I'm in my tiki phase. This book isn't as exciting as the title would have you believe: It's about a group of ladies who went there to paint pictures of naked men In the weird catagory, a Benadryl Maori back scratcher At least it looks Maori But it looks like it was modeled after a bad rendition in some old Anthropologist's field notes You know, when the dumb scientist guy couldn't draw... I'm still not totally convinced.... I know it's not aztec... My only questions are: Why? and What is the Maori/ Benadryl connection? And finally, a non tiki treasure craft whale set: Buzzy Out! Maybe there was some kind of pharmaceutical convention in N.Z. and Benadryl had these made as mementos? Not the greatest carving indeed, but it's based on existing Maori carvings. I am miffed about the Disneyland "Tiki Garden"...Were they referring to the Tahitian Terrace, OR do these swizzles predate the official naming of the Enchanted Tiki Room. I'm sure these swizzles were a promotion used on United Airlines since they were the first sponsors of the show, right?

The Tiki Garden has been the stepchild of the Tiki Room forever, since it was considered the holding area/ waiting room for the "real" attraction, and its Tikis were not fully animatronic: But it is actually the Tiki Garden that has provided all the Polynesian pop mythology and the more interesting Tiki art to us Tikiphiles, with Tangaroa the Talking Tree above, and various deities like Koro: Hina, the Rain Goddess: ...and Ngendei, the Earth-shaker (here the original sculpt, right side up): Not to forget Pele! Why, we would have never had as many wonderful collectibles without the Tiki Garden Tikis! It is of course regrettable that this swizzle depicts that relatively generic, often used swizzle stick Tiki --but here at TC we know that that Tiki stems from the Kona Kai Marriott logo Tiki, which ultimately is based on the Trader Vic/De Young Museum Maori Tiki, and so all is well, after all... Larger and heavier unmarked Surfer Girl mug. Slightly different from the older one on the right and newer one on the left. I did see plenty of mediocre and overpriced PNG stuff but little else. These are about 3 1/2 inches long, made of the standard NZ wood-look resin with no marks. Looks like they did have stickers - maybe someone has one still intact?

I have to fire up my Marantz quad receiver and wish I had quad turntable! Buzzy Out!

Yet another version of the Orchids of Hawaii surfer girl mug. This one is marked Orchids of Hawaii R-80A, Japan. The other smaller marked version just has R-80A Japan. Trader Vic's fogcutter mug from 1993. Blue Hawaiian Inn mug. Headhunter's Lounge and Jungle Room menu from the Thunderbird Motel, Treasure Island, Florida. A "teaser" for Beyond Tiki Finds...trying to find out some more on this poster. It is not a reproduction and appears to be printed on the heavier old paper used way back when. A neat lava Poi Pounder lighter Coupla hula girls 3 chalkware hula chicks Nice OMC scorpion bowl I didn't have It's nice to have friends. My buddy returned from a car show with these 2 S&P sets My other buddy scored these cleaning out the wine cabinet in his parents' basement: An unused bottle of Tahiti Joe Mai Tai mix & an unused bottle of Falernum My small remembrances of the New Tiki, R.I.P I finally solved my fluorescent lighting issue! I hit a flea market yesterday & scored these swag lamps out of a restaurant in Wilbraham, Mass. The guy said the name of the place was Tequila's. Obviously, these were in the building long before Tequila's. Does anyone know the original name of the Poly-pop paradise these came from & does anyone know who manufactured them? I'm pretty sure they are worth the $5.00 each I paid for them! I seem to be finding stuff in strange places these days. It must be my superior hunting skills! :lol:

I scored some good stuff, but I'm also suffering from collector's remorse for what I didn't buy. At the same flea market I got the lamps at, a guy had a headhunter statue, holding a head, about 20" tall for $29.00. I passed, telling myself that I couldn't show my 10-year old daughter this well-endowed statue. About a half hour later, I got this brainstorm to just make a tapa loincloth for him, but alas he was gone! I've been thinking about it since & how stuff like that just doesn't show up around here. Oh well, I hope he found a good home!

Most of this stuff went overseas so it's not as common here as I'd like. I thought I'd see more of it in OZ but had no luck other than these little guys. PTD - can you please provide a legible pic of the story on your menu? That headhunter's lounge cover art is probably my all-time favourite 2D Tiki Modern design. Great find!
