I usually don't find much outside Pittsburgh (I think there were more high paying steel jobs in Pittsburgh that enabled mid-century bosses to go to Hawaii, just a theory.)
But I was farther outside the city than usual over the weekend and stopped in somewhere, expectations low.

Very glad I stopped! and I left a few things behind.

My finds this weekend:

So a question: one of the Martin Denny albums i picked up was non-hawaiian/tiki. Would you buy any and all Martin Denny albums you come across?

Some dude who usually deals Native American stuff had these in his antique mall booth yesterday, unpriced. I had my friend contact him and we were able to make an out-back-in-the-parking-lot-deal for them:

19" Fijian club with stand:

It has a Hawaiian looking tiki guy on it

and a pair of tiki bob looking guys as well

And the make me happy for a long time score is this big old Hawaiian King's bowl:

It measures 29" long, 11" wide, and 10" tall

Bucket mug for scale:

My tiki habit was pretty costly this month...
BuzzyOut!

I say any Martin Denny album is a good album!

I stopped at this LAX airliner expo on my way to the Tiki Market Place last weekend after receiving a tip from A-Frame (Mr. Long Beach).

Very cool airline memorabilia show, picked up some Tiki swizzles (pick a color, any color!)

Some vintage travel bags

Luggage stickers

And a nice Maori travel book full of Tiki photos.

Then on to the Tiki Market Place - 3d Anniversary Attendance Record Event

Matchbooks

And some Bamboo Ben paper odds and ends.

All in all, a fun weekend.

What's that Ohana Hut piece?

DC, I have #54. I was wondering what the piece that Sven posted was. It looks like a preliminary drawing.

New stuff from this week:

5' x 5' piece of tapa

A few holes and folds but it's in excellent shape overall

New Zealand Maori linen:

American Museum of Natural History Science Guide No. 96 published in 1946

It has some PNG info throughout

Pair of stone Moai:

Tonga mermaid tapa fan:

Tiki lamp: looks like it was a statue that someone half assed into a lamp by drilling a hole through the head

I was also questioning the tattoos, penned in with a Sharpie

Then I looked at the details on the back and arms and some of the negative space was carved out

At first I thought some idiot drew all over it, but now I'm leaning towards it's unfinished...Best guess of where it's from is Tahiti/Society Islands. Style and wood type make me think so. He has a small penis carved on it too, which is so small you cant see it in any of the the pictures.

Buzzy Out!

Great finds everyone. Buzzy that lamp is special. Wendy

I have the 2 tiki hibachi that have been posted here before...

But today I stumbled upon a big terracotta hibachi grill like I've never seen before....

Lady said she had it over 30 years. She said that was the way it was painted when she got it. She didn't wanna sell it but I ended up buying it.

Its so ugly and so cool all at same time.

Its not handmade.... the grill looks like it been replaced. Has a terracotta bowl with holes on the inside for the fire. The wire for the earrings is thrashed and the nose ring is missing....

Here's how it compares with the regular hibachi

I haven't seen one in the 20 years I've been collecting this tiki junk. I'm happy to give it a new home..

Buzzy, I have a small, framed piece of tapa cloth from the Marquesas that looks like it was drawn with a Sharpie.

From this week:

I've been finding some cool stuff recently...

Pair of Maori Patu

I've been binging on $1 used CDs for a little over a year now. This week I found a licensing promo copy of a Les Baxter sampler compilation. Contact info on it is for Thomas Baxter:
Front book cover

back book cover

Jewel box back cover

There were a bunch of cds like this in the pile. It looked like they came from some movie/tv/production company. All different artists, labels, and genres that were all produced by the individual artist's publishing company. Most of them were packaged as songs available for movie soundtracks.

Nicely carved 13" wood Moai. I saw this early in the day, but not early enough. Some guy bought it, and then had it in his booth for resale, where I happened upon it, and paid a little markup. Still a good deal, I think, at $20

Carving and detail wise, that's probably the best one I have. Here's my Moai collection:

One step short for the best deal on this next one too... I saw it in a seller's booth only after the 6th time I passed it this morning. he had just put it out before my last lap. I got excited because he was a junk dealer, not a collectables seller, so I knew it'd be cheap. As I stepped towards it to get it, I saw an arm go down and grab it mere milliseconds before I could. When I looked at the guy holding it, I recognized him as the antique store back alley deal guy that I bought the club and King's bowl from two weeks ago. I told him after he paid for it to come meet me in the next booth down, and I wink-winked at him to let him know I wanted it. We walked down a few yards where he sold it to me. He paid $10, sold it to me for $20.... Once again, a good deal, I think, but it could have been cheaper if I was faster!

29" Tahitian Marquesan Adze/ceremonial decorative tiki club:

Been a MIIIGHTY long time since I've posted any finds on here, so I guess it's a good a time as any! Some acquisitions from this past week and a half. Nothing huge, but I'm definitely satisfied as I haven't gone hunting in a few years due to other personal projects and life in general. Also if anyone wants to know, that dress is from Sourpuss clothing. My girlfriend loves that brand and that pattern is fantastic.

For real? Small world! My girlfriend already follows them on FB as she has a sugar skull dress from there. Great fabrics.

Jon, Dem Mai Kai mugs are sweet!

Found this guy at the Goodwill today and was wondering if any one had any idea who the maker was. Pretty sure it's contemporary, but good finds are pretty thin on the ground here in Portland, and I could use a little tiki with my coffee so...

Thanks for the info! It's a mug, with a handle. I found the shots on Ooga Mooga, but they don't have the mug yet it seems...

Cheers

Thanks, it looks like the model number is BL6. There is a tag on one with LH0002 I wonder if that is an old number for this lamp?

I just got them yesterday and have looked at them probably ten times already.
Right now I have more of a dive bar than tiki bar in my patio and backyard. I am slowly taking the dive out of it :)

onemoresean, your patio looks like a great place to hang and imbibe. No doubt those lights will continue to make it even more of a south seas escape.

Four vintage boxes, unused...

Ok, anyone know anything about this mug?? We know who it was created for, because it's marked plainly on the back. What I've NEVER seen is another "Fong" mug with this top-hat for the top!! This really adds to the mugs appeal, and I'm wondering if this is a true "Wow Rare" moment - or something else...........?????

Nice find Nate. Any markings on the bottom.

Please help me identify this cool lamp and a possible value? She gorgeous, with excellent motion and 52 " tall. Very heavy vintage hula dancing girl with grass skirt floral lamp shade. I have pictures but can't attach.

Thanks!

"Nice find Nate. Any markings on the bottom."

This is actually a friend of mine's - I'll check with him, but from what I can recall, there are no marking on the bottom since it's all pretty much right there on the back for all to see......I'll post later.

Are those framed record covers that someone "trimmed" into rounded squares and framed?? I assume the LP's weren't in there with them?

-Nate

Not a new find, I've had this for quite a while. Been using it to store the remotes for the TV/Blueray/stereo. My wife lovingly refers to it as "The Vagina Bowl".

I thought it might have been a ceramic planter, but this morning I happened across this webpage that shows a conch shell bowl.

http://www.stevedolinsky.com/tiki-time-chicago

Seeing as how it resembles my conch shell "planter", I went searching TC to see what I could find. Only thing I found was one owned by hang10tiki that looks to be exact....."Trader Vic's conch shell bowl.

http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=1099&forum=5&vpost=714011&hilite=shell%20bowl

No TV markings....Has what looks like to be "SAXON '78" on the bottom.

Whatta think?? Trader Vic or no??

I picked up a green Suffering Bastard shot glass today. There is no Tiki Farm mark on the bottom. Are these being reproduced by another company?

TikiNate- sorry for the confusion
All normal albums
I just used a frame "app" to be able to show 4 albums in 1 photo
:)

Howlinowl-
The shape looks like mine
But yours has brighter colors

Here's the bottom of mine

[ Edited by: hang10tiki 2015-02-19 19:29 ]

It's fun seeing one of my hula girls in the hang10tiki photo. She's a super woman holding up the shell. Wendy

I have a conch bowl similar to yours, howlinowl, but with lid..

..marked Atlantic (copyright) Mold. Initialed JL on fore foot.

http://www.debmark.com/moldsearch.php#start

For some reason the correct page doesn't load, but if you open
the link and type "conch" into their search engine you will see
several of these bowl types.

p.s. After posting I tried the link and it opens a little down the page(?),
scroll up to top of page to find their search box.
