Buzzy, those Tiki's Bar & Grill mugs are from Waikiki. They are current mugs that they sell there, my friends grabbed the surfer girl when we were there a few months ago. Tiki's makes those for themselves, they sell them for cheap and usually have bright colors on them. They are only sold at Tiki's connected to the Aston Waikiki. |

Thanks, you are correct. Here is a lousy picture from the Orchids coconut images. Still pretty cool for $2.12 |

That rat fink record is so weird I had to try to find some more info. Here is a great article about Jackie Kannon and his ties to the mob and Roulette Records: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2012/03/mobsters-rat-finks.html Very interesting read. gabbahey |

The wife and I did the custody shuffle and it worked out that we had the 4th of July to ourselves... so we spent the day combing antique and thrift stores for treasures. Tiki items are tough to come by in this area (Western Kentucky / Northwest Tennessee). You Cali folks don't realize how lucky you are... although, I ignore items everyday at shops that you can't find on the West Coast... so I suppose it's a trade off. That being said, I think we made some great finds: This Dee Bee Co. parrot: A most excellent wooden Buddha: This brass and copper diving helmet... the front glass is missing, but I got it at a sweet price: A cool Hawaiian tourist souvenir: I was thrilled to find this: These carved wooden cups... I can't find info on them anywhere. If anyone has any insight, please lemme know: And another tourist item... this dude is outta control: All in all... a good day. |

Okay, so Vermont is pretty much a tiki collecting wasteland. Have never found any muggery, statues, authentic carvings, or the like. But every once in a while I find wacky stuff, like I found yesterday. Homemade sea urchin candleholders...who knew? And some cute little wood/tapa style S&P shakers. Look very 70sish. |

Bought this 4-foot resin tiki at an antique store. It was originally part of a set of two. At this size it must have been a display of some sort. Anyone seen it before? |

Pretty happy with my finds at a Goodwill yesterday. A subtle but cool aloha shirt. A two-faced mai tai glass marked Sheraton Princess Kaiulani on one side and Honolulu, Hawaii on the other. And a great book about the art of the Sepik River. There's some information in the front of the book and a few colour photos but the majority of the photos are in B&W. Here's a few pages from it.
These next two were from another thriftstore. The first is a book about Hawaii. I pretty much bought it for the one picture shown in the photo. It was only $1.00. And this was $3.00 with 75% off, so it only cost me 75c. Unfortunately there are only three pictures in it that are Polynesian related (including the cover photo which is from Easter Island), just about everything else is from various other countries, although the museum catalogue (that was surprisingly still with it, considering it is from 1957) does list a few pieces from Melanesia. |

I recently picked up two Trader Vic's partial bottles. Both are marked copyright 1963 on the labels. One is Trader Vic's NAVY GROG RUM and the other is Trader Vic's NAVY GROG MIX. The rum is about half full and the mix looks like it was used once. Is there any chance they are still drinkable...without dying? :) |

This has been a good couple of weeks for tiki! Found this fellow at a thrift store last week. Seems like I remember seeing it some where, but can't find it on Oog-Mooga. Any one know it? Then I found these fellows at a Goodwill beginning of the week. But this was the big score... I walked right past the green Sneaky Tiki and Trader Pangs mugs and almost missed them. Super stolked to find a vintage Mr Bali Hai, in such good shape. Still has the OMC sticker on it. It's always amazing to me how these things travel, finding a San Diego mug up here in Portland... And then there were the Home Depot Tiko Diablo totems and the Tiki Kon loot. Yup, good couple of weeks for tiki... |

Though not strictly Tiki we all know how nautical design has always blended well in the classic Polynesian bar setting. That's why I couldn't pass up the $55 asking price on this awesome antique ship's port light. It's big, crusty, dusty and dented. In other words perfect. It has a hole in the bottom but all the better to electrify it and put it in my home bar. I have drooled over these lanterns for years but the high prices have always turned me away. It is a rare maker as well and I feel very lucky to have found it. |

Just a couple acquisitions over the last couple weeks. The Trader Sam's mugs are gifts from some friends who went to WDW (in lieu of the Nautilus that they tried to get but was sold out). The record was from a thrift shop that only had German, Hawaiian, and Mexican music LPs for some reason. The table was $3 at a yard sale. Now the problem with the table is that we don't actually have a Tiki bar, just a kitchen decorated in Tiki stuff. It is insurance against a future Tiki bar :) |
